- I went to an open water swim clinic, held the same week of the Chicago Triathlon. I don't know what I was expecting to happen, but the agenda for the day simple. Swim a mile. And so I did.

This whole session was more valuable than you would ever know. The feelings you went through on your swim is what a lot of first timers will be going through during the actual race. One thing you learned was that you need to settle into a good rhythm and the distance will pass. I’m not sure if you will have a wave start or mass start. Your best bet is to let folks go and then start your swim so that you can quickly settle in to your rhythm without getting banged up for the first 250 m or so. Best of luck with the race, and we are all very much looking forward to your full race report.
I’ll definitely be letting everyone go ahead
Mike, thank you for this video. I'm doing the Chicago Triathlon this year, and did the Open Water Clinic yesterday. It's refreshing to know I am not the only one who felt like giving up after the first couple of meters. I honestly just wanted to swim back and quit. But, seeing this makes me feel like I can do it. Thanks for instilling confidence in me, 2 years later. I am grateful for your honesty and appreciate you sharing your frustrations and perseverance through the swim.
the swim was so hard. I came in almost literally last during the triathlon for the swim portion, but I made it.
You're very open and honest about your swimming struggles, keep going ! There will be a point when it becomes enjoyable 👍
I like thinking about swimming. I hope to say that soon about actual swimming
😃 from personal experience it takes time to become even just very average. A plan and feedback from knowledgeable people really helps. Short swims and very often is better than long demoralizing sessions. I hope the Triathlon goes well Ko 👍
Gotta say im really enjoying this buildup to your first triathlon. Used to only come here once every few months for a shoe video but this "series" has me coming back a lot more frequently :D
I’m glad you enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
I glad to see you were able to get to one of the swim clinics. I hope it was useful.
It was awesome to meet you! I love this video because I felt exactly the same. My first swim clinic was 2019. Had a panic attack halfway to the first marker. Last month I was able to do the whole distance. My husband and I were thinking about you riding your bike home in the storm. Glad you made it back safe!
So great to meet you two!
Looking forward to the race review.
Fit on this wetsuit looks good to me. I'd probably suggest it over the sleeved one. Way to go on the long swim today. You're going to do great this weekend. Damn, sorry about the camera.
Also, lighting and that black backdrop looks amazing. Nice work Ko!
So, I just got your care package (video posting in a few hours). Would it be super weird if I wore the tri suit with sleeves and a sleeveless wetsuit?
@@kofuzi - No need to make a video about that stuff. I’m just excited you’re trying triathlons. It would not be weird to wear a tri suit under a wetsuit. Putting anything on while wet is going to be slow. You’ll see. Go with what’s comfortable over what’s faster or stylish. And try to have as much fun as possible 🙌
Doing this practice OWS sesh was one of the best things you could’ve done before the race. Great job on you! You’ll be much more prepared (mentally and physically) for the swim, which
imo is the most daunting part of a triathlon. Good luck man!!
I feel so much better about everything now
Well done on the swim, sounds like you gained a bit of confidence for the tri. What a awesome clinic they had and the support they gave you guys. All the best for the tri, try to enjoy it 😅
Sorry about your insta! Great job on the swim. Have a fun on Sunday…you’ve got this 💪🏼😃
Feeling confident!
Looks like fun. That storm looks like a normal afternoon in Central Florida
Storm shots are pretty :)
Great Job KO. exciting to see your progress with swimming and putting the doubts aside.
Looking HARDCORE cycling in the rain!!! Sorry about your 360 though 😢 lastly a super helpful swim tip I received a while ago - focus on the task at hand, swimming stroke - will help with your energy and effort. I know I used to get panic attacks overthinking about everything and this helped a ton. Like you said you’re only 2 months in!
Thanks for the tip!
😢 RIP Insta360 Go. Hope the weather gets better for your Triathlon.
Good luck the rest of your training cycle Mike, good luck this weekend!
Thanks so much!
Bummer about the Insta but glad you’re feeling better about the swim. I’m very impressed since I’m not a swimmer. 👍
Very happy with your improvement! Goodluck and enjoy the experience!
Thanks!
52 minutes for mile is not bad time for first open water race. Open water swimming is much harder than swimming in the pool.
Those storm clouds were ominous. I often run in the rain by the beach but never seen those kind of clouds before.
Keep going u got this!
Yes!
That's got to be a big confidence boost. Tear it up.
Feeling much better about things
NOOB question. Will a person sink with a wetsuit on? I ask only because I'm not a strong swimmer and have never tried open-water swimming. Thanks for sharing this Mike, excited for you!
Hi. I used a BlueSeventy when I raced tri - very bouyant. Help my swim massively.
It made floating a lot easier, and even in the later portions of the swim, I felt like my kick was actually breaking the water (where I’m used to having sinky legs).
I’ve talked to Remy B Reel, and he says that things are even more buoyant in salt water
@@kofuzi Thank you for your input, i really appreciate it! Excited and will be rooting for you this weekend!
Glad to see you decided on a wetsuit. Begin the swim slower like in running. Swim your own pace and feel no shame for holding the wall.
Me and the wall will be friends
For your next triathlon (no matter what you think now,you WILL want to do another!) start working on bilateral breathing. Yeah it can make you faster but, for me, the biggest immediate gain was having a better idea of what was going on around me. Maybe try some left sided breathing in the pool before this race just in case the wind is blowing in at you from the right or you've got somebody swimming right in your face on that side!
it seems to exacerbate my vertigo
@@kofuzi interesting. When I started open water swimming I needed 10-15 minutes sat very still at the end of each swim because my head was spinning so much. Earplugs completely fixed it. I wonder if that might be related to your issue.
A couple people have mentioned it. I will give it a try
When you do your triathlon people will be soo jealous when they see you run from behind...
I know I am when I see guys or girls who went out of the water much later than me pass me effortlessly during the run 🤣
Hopefully, I’ll have some gas left in the tank for that!
@@kofuzi I am sure even with a nearly empty tank you will be much faster than most of us with a full one :D
Have fun on your trathlon!
I am looking forward to watching your video on that.
Didn’t know you got a wetsuit! Now my boy is looking sharp! Exciting. 🏊♀️
Things are coming together
@@kofuzi Great! As you taper for the triathlon focus on your nutrition (e.g. chicken and rice in the preferred) and hydration the day before, as well as rehearsing your T1 transition. This is a fun activity and surprisingly helpful. Also, put your gels in your tri suit pockets before putting on your wetsuit. As an option, you can also tape your gels directly to the top tube of your bike.
Is there any amateur diving club that you could contact that could look for your camera at the bottom of the lake? Not sure if that kind of thing is big/allowed there, but I've heard of people having success getting things back due to kind divers in the past.
A friend mentioned that there is a guy that dives along the lakefront. But he’s be looking for a tiny camera that’s likely buried in sand now, in an area that is full of debris. While swimming, I saw a rideshare bike, a garbage can, and a lot of rebar. This is also the area of the lakefront where a Park District pickup outfitted with a salt spreader fell in the lake last winter
the winner will be everyone that gives it a try
Nice
Sorry for your 360 cam !
It happens.
It’s not the first camera that the lake has taken from me
Yo!
Yo!
Here's a tri-swim tip from an old veteran tri-geek....seed yourself with the dolphins NOT the sharks and on the extreme outside for the swim. Good Luck! and ENJOY!
Whaaaa..???
Watch with My Wife. She thinks the wetsuit fits very well😙.
the wetsuit is weird. it has abs built into it.
