    Solar can run a house Alex but you need battery storage for the evenings. I have 10kws of lithium batteries and I'm 100% off grid. I would suggest adding at least 4 more to cover your daytime usage. They have 550w panels at Leroy Merlin for 185€ each and are very easy to string together with your other panels.

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Год назад +2

      They do a system with batteries but it was too expensive for us, we only have a computer, fridges and a water heater on at night and the water heater is now off at night via a timer, so should be very little to pay.
      The problem is i do not like Lithium and what it is doing to the world, they are starting mining for it here in Portugal and is causing pollution already.
      later when funds allow we will upgrade to more panels...... those at leroy merlin sound cheap🙂👍

      We've got 16 solar panels here in Spain, we also don't have a battery as after paying 10,000 to the solar company we're pretty much broke now. Pity 8 didn't know the panels we're so cheap in Leroy merlin😮

    Hi Alex, Sandra and Molly. I have been thinking about Solar for some time now, and am probably thinking that this is the best solution long term. Its the cost of batteries that have always pushed me away from solar. but do we really need power 24/7, no. I'll be interested to see how you adapt to power only when the sun is shining. You just organise your life a little differently.

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Год назад

      Hi James, we are still on mains power 24/7.
      We paid to have the best electric brought to our house 9 years ago, 3phase with maximum amps.... here in Portugal you can choose how many amps come into the house and the less you have the less you pay per KW.
      I feel the same about batteries, some people have told us solar is free, it makes me laugh when in 5 years they will have to buy new batteries , so we see our 30 euros a month once the system is paid off like saving 30 a month over 5 years for new batteries, the only difference is we have full 3 phase electric when we need it and dont have the worry of 'when' my batteries will need replacing.

    How much does the solar panels and fitting cost ? And how much do you pay EDP for the installation ?

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Год назад +1

      Hi, installation is 100% free,
      Obviously we are paying slightly more for the system than if i bought it but it is interest free and we went for paying over 2years, you can choose longer.
      Now we are paying 96 euros month for this system over 2 years and for any non solar electric we use from the grid.. and that has a 10% discount for each KW used.
      they do much larger systems and one with batteries but it was too expensive for us right now, maybe when the goats start making us an income we can upgrade it. 🙂👍

    • @ruthconstantino6861
      @ruthconstantino6861 Год назад +2

      @@FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife You know, i think you're the first amongst the Central Portugal channels i follow who have access to mains power to feature or even mention EDP-installed for free, payable in monthly installments of duration of one's choosing and interest-free, with discounted grid use solar panels! I think everyone else paid for their own panels (as well as energy storage system)! This makes solar in reach for modest-income folks on the grid. 🤯 This is another top "lifestyle" tip to have handy to refer to like your review of Pre-1951 properties & legalities. 🙂👍🏼

      On the scale we would need it it really isnt a viable option, it is more for small scale vegetable patches etc.. but i think it is a bit of a 'fad'..... the burning of our green rubbish and wood piles creates pretty much biochar, the only difference between biochar on charcoal is 100 degrees in the burning process👍
