The whole close season and the Aug-Nov months were a serious hangover to losing the title the previous season. There was nowhere for Ron to go other than the exit door. Not getting Terry Butcher was a serious oversight. This was exacerbated by the squandering of the Hughes sale funds the previous season.
The first few points I think I echoed, I didn't make enough of how poor the 3 acquisitions were. I think Davenport was unlucky, top scorer that season, and Gibson, for everything that he is not 'a United player', was a battler, and the Dane was decent but yes, massive flops overall.
The glory era reds forget that it's been a lot worse than it has this season. In a way I prefer those days, no expectations...just supporting our club.
