My Season as a United Fan...1976/77
After the double disappointment in the May, the Doc had rallied his troops and his 'Red & White Army', to go once more into the breach to claim silverware and to start realising their potential.
Two fan favourites left the club over the season with another arriving to cement his place in Old Trafford history and into the Stretford End's collective heart.
Would the Doc be the man to lead United into a brave new world?
So sit back, relax and reminisce, or like me when creating it, learn about the ups and downs of a season as I arrived on the scene to witness the glory of the 1976/77 campaign.

My Season as a United Fan...1975/76

In the last couple of years it had been 'the worst of times', relegation to the second tier of English football since the War and then a whole campaign tasked with getting out at the first attempt. So when would it return back to 'the best of times', and would it happen under 'The Doc'? This vid takes a personal look back at the first campaign back in the big time, and chronicles how 'The Doc's...

The word 'hero', like 'legend' is thrown around willy-nilly nowadays but this man, Harry Gregg, snuggly slips into both categories. Not only was he an excellent keeper, declared by FIFA as THE best in the world in 1958, but he had the courage, bravery and humility to think nothing of his own safety in order to save strangers and friends alike. After a relatively excellent 2022/23 campaign for Manchester United and new boss, Dutchman Erik ten Hag, there was a lot of expectations for the campaign just gone, even a title challenge was in the mind of a number of Reds. However, as we know now 10 months on from the start of the season, it was a campaign of regression, with a never-ending injury list, a number of off-the-field distractions,...

    I remember Norwich coming to OT that season and battering us; we were lucky to get away with a 2-0 loss. It's why I keep telling people that we need to stick with Ten Hag; we were shite under Fergie for a good 4 years while he got the balance right. And the team which won the PL in 93 didn't much resemble the 89 team despite Fergie having signed a load of new players. Remember when we signed Pally? He was bobbins for a couple of season but ended up being the best centre half in the PL. ETH isn't in the fortunate position of Guardiola or Slot. He hasn't inherited a top notch team. He needs to do the kind of rebuild that Fergie did.

    My dad took me to my first United game that year, we beat Oxford 2-1 in the League Cup. I was 7; rather than risk the Stretty terraces, we went into the seats at the Scoreboard end. It was still fucking mental. And I learned my first song, "Five foot eight, not much weight, Gerry Daly's fucking great!"

    No mention of the perfectly legit disallowed Forest goal in that 3rd round match. Fergie wouldn't have been fired on the Monday. But out of all competitions, having spunked 6.5 million, and with the league form that followed, pressure to fire him would have been irresistible.

    • @gadaboutunited
      @gadaboutunited 3 дня назад

      To be fair it was given for offside, and it looks like possibly a Forest player was in an offside positions when the ball was headed towards goal but without a side-on replay, you have to trust the linesman over yours or my interpretation. Remember, in those days the rule on 'interfering with play' was more strict than all the updates since, and the potential offside player was lying next to Leighton, and the ref was perfectly placed. Regardless, every side has these 'Sliding Doors' moments, whether they are United or anyone else, either for a poor penalty decision, a sending off, anything really. I think a 'better' call for United being fortunate would have been the semi-final replay Vs. Oldham Athletic. Early on, Nick Henry's shot crashed off the bar and according to the replay bounced behind the line, not on it as was adjudged by the officials. Fortunately, there was no goal line technology in those days. There are highlights of the game on RUclips, even extended highlights, but that effort isn't featured. If it were, it would've been in this video, it could've decided the tie and Fergie's future.

    fantastic stuff, love that era of the game, far better than today's premier league, United were a real football club back then, i think United would have won the league if doc had not been sacked, in fact i think they'd have been very successful indeed challenging Liverpool and Forest, i don't think fergie would ever have got the job as doc, notwithstanding his controversial nature, would have been in charge for a long time, great seeing the Red Army, where have have all the bootboys gone?

    • @gadaboutunited
      @gadaboutunited 4 дня назад

      My issue with United as champions is that we seemed to have the players but not the mentality and bottled it. Check out the other video to this, the 1975/76 campaign. We lost the league by 3pts, after tripping up in several games near the end of the season against mediocre outfits. By comparison, QPR & Liverpool's run-in records were insane... we repeated this under Big Ron and Fergie in 1991/92. Eventually we got it right, which had a lot to do with a Frenchman. Would've loved to see the Doc take it.

    21:12 That's incorrect. ManUtd scored 76 in 96/97 PL, only 73 in 95/96. Yes the goal difference was still better in 95/96 but you said they scored fewer goals. Also ManUtd were in the ChampionsLeague and reached the semi's, they weren't in CL in 95/96 & hardly in Europe at all it takes more toll on the team when you are but also 1 less PL defeat in 96/97 (regardless of the fewer points). Plus Newcastle (as well as Arsenal & Liverpool) had strengthened their teams in 96/97 so to beat them more comfortably to the title than the previous year shows ManUtd were a better team than 95/96 (as expected with a bigger/stronger squad) and also ManUtd's PL tally of that season of course doesn't even include the thrashing of Newcastle in the CharityShield and only 2 seasons later they'd win the treble because they were improving each year and gaining more & more experience in the CL which really started from 96/97 onwards.

    • @gadaboutunited
      @gadaboutunited 13 дней назад

      You were right about the goals scored, that was a mistake but I do believe that this was still a weaker season, and I will stick by my general assessment that we were more fortunate to take the title, and needed to strengthen the side significantly from then on. Cantona was a talisman that was the missing piece in the inaugural Premier League title and everything thereafter; I doubt we could have won 1, let alone 2 Doubles without him. The strengthening was required, and that's what we did - Yorke, Blomqvist and Sheringham were bought in 3 of the 4 transfer windows before we won the Treble; we also strengthened our defence with Stam of course. When we won the league in 1996/97, we did it with just 75pts, (the lowest ever tally to win the Premier League, and way back to win the First Division) the level of the challenge in that year was poor, we got very lucky. You're right about Europe of course, and that's a big factor but whilst we did improve over the next 2 seasons to win the Champions League at last, you conveniently skip over the season after this, 1997/98 that I was trying to foreshadow in the video. We lost the title to Arsenal with a couple of games to spare, we went out of the FA Cup cheaply, in the 5th Round to Barnsley (after a replay, so we had to play poorly twice against a minnow in-a-row, almost unheard of in Fergie's reign after he started winning silverware) ..., we lasted 1 round in the League Cup and in the Champions League we were shocked by Monaco, not a European giant, on goal difference in the quarter finals. It was in all a big dip in form, over 4 competitions, not a concerted progression that we earned in the Champions league, it was a definite 'step back' not only in the Champions League but in everything, which can sometimes be enough to spur you on to greater things, to reignite that hunger.

    • @FootkerSnookball
      @FootkerSnookball 12 дней назад

      @gadaboutunited You can have those opinions, but I thought ManUtd weren't as bad as people make out in 97/98 and had loads of injury problems & bad luck but still should've won the PL. ManUtd strengthened so much in 98/99 because Ferguson wasn't quite prepared for the absences ManUtd were going to get in 97/98 therefore playing B-players and/or first team players out of position for really important games including Arsenal at OldTrafford. ManUtd were miles ahead in the 97/98 PL, a mixture of throwing it away worse than Newcastle did in 95/96 and bad luck at bad times I.e Scholes should've had a pen at 2-2 at Highbury in a game Arsenal needed to win to stand any chance and both Keane (who missed most of the season) & Irwin were out injured, Irwin more annoyingly because only a few days earlier Bosvelt did a nasty foul on him in the ChampionsLeague and got to be subbed off instead of sent off (which again ManUtd playing in CL & Arsenal hardly in Europe contributed a lot to the outcome of the PL race). ManUtd actually finished with the same goals for & conceded in 97/98 to what Arsenal's invincibles got 6 seasons later which was far superior to Arsenal 97/98. ManUtd had no comprehensive PL defeats that season, Arsenal had 3 or 4. ManUtd's biggest loss was one 2-0 away loss to SheffWed with the 2nd goal coming very late and Arsenal lost that fixture by the same score. Arsenal don't win the title without maximum points off ManUtd just like ManUtd wouldn't have won 95/96 without maximum points off Newcastle (although ManUtd I think still won those more legitimately, may have been lucky at StJames's but not controversial) and that's why Arsenal were allowed to win not just the PL but the double because they had just got over the line with 2 games to spare luckily for them it wasn't because it was a convincing title win but because they had abnormally played all of their home games & were quite lucky to take maximum pts from ManUtd which really gave them 2 trophies in 1. Arsenal's final 2 PL games (which they lost both scoring 0 conceding 5) were away fixtures they always struggled in if you look at seasons around that year and ManUtd's last 2 games were games they were always going to win (and had the exact opposite record in) so if ManUtd were still in it they would've had the advantage but what it allowed Arsenal to do is rest players for the cup final so they were fresher than Newcastle (who still hit the post at only 1-0, finished 2-0) when even if all their players played away to Liverpool & Villa they would've struggled and got zero to 2pts (max) from the 2 games, but they needed to beat ManUtd home&away in the first place and they won it because of that (or any other piece of luck you can think of from that season, you only need to take out just 1 thing that went Arsenal's way and they don't win the title that's how much of a nothing margin it really was....like ManUtd's freak loss to Coventry from 1-2 up with 5mins remaining, Curtis was also at fault but that showed the injury problems ManUtd had for him to have been playing & he also played vs Arsenal at home later on, Arsenal learned from that ManUtd loss at Highfield Road when they went to Coventry the following month and made sure they took a 2-2 draw which was probably more unlikely than ManUtd's chances of not winning that fixture they lost, even this sort of thing forgetting everything else is the difference between 1st & 2nd that season). MichaelOwen was hacking Schmeichel & Johnsen at OldTrafford. Schmeichel did get an injury that season and Johnsen was injured in that game because of that, he'd scored ManUtd's goal to go in front and MichaelOwen lucky to only get booked for his first foul on Schmeichel then scored the equaliser taking advantage of Pallister's age at the time (he also got taken off away to Arsenal that season injured) before finally being sent off for injuring Johnsen who had to be subbed off where he also missed the next game which was another home draw like this ended up and ManUtd dropped 4 crucial home points and lost it by half a point in the end as ManUtd would've won if it finished on level points with Arsenal. Giggs also got injured that season. I guess Ferguson wouldn't have even sold Poborsky mid-season if he knew the injury problems ManUtd would have. Played BenThornley a lot instead. Also ManUtd did to a certain extent improve in the ChampionsLeague because they topped the group very comfortably which again had Juventus in like the previous season but roles were reversed. If ManUtd had got the group record in 97/98 that they had the previous season (3 wins, 3 losses) they would’ve missed out on playing in the knockouts because 96/97 anyone finishing 2nd go through but 97/98 & 98/99 was harder to qualify from the group it was only the group winners and best 2 runners-up out of 6 and ManUtd in 97/98 won their first 5 out of 5 games including vs Juventus and it was this time Juventus who needed a result in the last game just to qualify and ManUtd were already through and played them away and Juventus needed a goal with just 6mins remaining to scrape through but the previous year they won the group with ease and ManUtd finished just above Fenebache but that group phase and the knockout games that followed was still good experience and ManUtd only went out on away goals 97/98 and Monaco did have a bunch of players who were about to win the WorldCup and also ManUtd were without the likes of Schmeichel & Keane. Yeah looking at the negatives ManUtd had a bad loss to Barnsley in FAcup. Schmeichel gifted Barnsley their only goal at OldTrafford which made the draw doable for them. Would've expected to have won the replay but ManUtd did knock out the holders Chelsea in their own ground though and were 0-5 up (also beat them in the Shield). Also ManUtd have had disappointing FAcup (and LeagueCup) losses in seasons where they were still the best team in the PL. Including quite a few at OldTrafford (sometimes unlucky, sometimes poor performance). But it didn't change from the fact they were the best team in the PL. ManUtd would've been even more emphatic than they were in 98/99 but the cup draws (which could've barely been handpicked any harder) and decisions ManUtd were on the receiving end of were horrific (thinking about things like Bayern's triple offside Elber goal, David Elleray's performance in the Anfield PL game May5th99, the FAcup semi-final where ManUtd had to basically beat Arsenal 3 times in 1 tie following Keane's wrongly disallowed goal in the first game forcing a replay ManUtd were also quite comfortably leading the replay until a lucky deflection made ManUtd have to beat them all over again in extra-time and with 10 men) To still win the treble in a season like that where you're getting hard opponents nonstop and unnecessary replays and not getting away with anything i.e Arsenal awarded a 92nd min pen which people act like ManUtd are lucky Schmeichel saved it but firstly it was awarded unlike Scholes at Highbury the previous season and it's not like Bergkamp blazed it over or wide either (Yorke had in fact put a pen wide vs Arsenal that season in a PL game ManUtd should've won which people fail to mention when they talk about how close the title race apperently was) to only lose 3 games overall in the 3 competitions won (both cups won in invincible style of course) is a lot more impressive than people give them credit for. Some people say it was lucky but Arsenal's 97/98 double was a lot luckier which no one mentions. ManUtd scored by far the most goals in PL & CL also (and out of all the CL goals which was around 30, none were pens either, plus faced loads of BallonDor winners& nominees who'd never won the CL as it was harder to qualify but they were in their prime in star studied teams so were just as hungry for it as ManUtd). At least with the unlucky 97/98 season particularly with injuries Ferguson learned from that because he couldn't have imagined being so unlucky with the cup draws etc...ManUtd had in 98/99 (that aspect was more unluckier than the previous season) which would've lost most teams the chance of having a successful season but he was just making sure 97/98 didn't happen, not knowing how much he'd need that strong squad to have the most successful season in the hardest circumstances. Even Keane getting injured at the beginning of the FAcup final and he & Scholes also suspended for the CL final etc...

      Fun fact: More people know that when you say, 'United' in relation to football, that you mean Manchester United, than people who use an apostrophe in the word, 'lots'. But you should watch the video, footage from both games, United Vs. Sheffield Unted that season.

      @@gadaboutunited Here's a fun fact got you too. Most fans of other United's find it really arrogant of Man U fans to simply call themselves "United". I was at the game at Bramall Lane that season - it was my 4th season as a season ticket holder - and like most Blades I've seen many things Man U fans will never have experienced.

    • @gadaboutunited
      @gadaboutunited 21 день назад

      @@ianlayton6949 To be fair, this was something given to us by neutrals and you can see examples everywhere, but here's two. If you watch only footy on RUclips from the 1940's, the commentary will not only refer to my club as, 'United', but 'The United', in the same way that it's called, 'The Arsenal' in some quarters - I think you would've exploded had that stuck :). Further, I was watching the brilliant, 'Match of the '70's, and it was Leeds Vs. United, and Dennis Waterman, who is a Chelsea fan I think, referred to Manchester United as 'United', and Leeds United as 'Leeds'. Man United wouldn't be called 'United' without the support of non-Reds, and when I mean 'non-Reds', I don't mean, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest or Bristol City fans...

    Couple of issues with the league tables you display. Firstly. I've never ever seen a "points won by opposition" in the points column before. Adds nothing but confusion. Secondly, you show the goal difference in the table, but in 1975/76 league positions of teams tied on points won were decided by goal average not difference. This was the last season that such a calculation was used (goals scored divided by goals conceded) as it did nothing to discourage defensive tactics. Only from the following season, 1976/77, did goal difference become the standard. To be authentic, United should be shown finishing the season with a goal average of 1.62!

    • @gadaboutunited
      @gadaboutunited 22 дня назад

      I can't argue with anything you said, also to be fair and more obvious to me but you didn't mention is that in those days rarely did you have all the sides on the same number of games at the end of each round of fixtures, never mind month.. There was actually a part I cut from this video as it was running long that mentions rarely did all the sides finish their league programmes on the final day, indeed the QPR boys had to watch in the studio as Liverpool went to Wolves and won their last game to clinch the title after being a goal down. Even before reading all of the factual issues that you have highlighted, I had already tried to remedy this by having looked in several places for league tables that I can use either game-on-game or month by month, as I have done several of these types of videos. However, this was the best I could procure. If you have any recommendations that could assist in my next video, which is the 1976/77 campaign as a follow-up to this one, I would be very grateful. This was the site I got it from was this www.worldfootball.net/schedule/eng-premier-league-1975-1976-spieltag/6/ so all issues should be directed at them to be fair. Whilst I did make the artistic choice to use them, so I must take some of the criticism directly, as mentioned above I didn't have a great deal of choice I'm afraid. If I wanted purely accurate table I would have to find every First Division result for each day it was played and enter the information manually to produce a table true to what actually happened but I'm sure you can appreciate that my time is limited. Regardless, to counter some of your feedback, you will notice if you change the year to a more recent season, it does become more intelligible. Thanks for the constructive criticism, I really do appreciate your feedback..

      @gadaboutunited 21 день назад

      You inspired me to look for a better alternative, and I've found one. I will implement their version of the tables in my next video. They have remedied all the issues both you and I had with them.
