Barkley was the man. The only time when I thought they had a chance was with that great Suns team. I think that one of the main reasons that the Suns could not beat the Bulls that year was that no one could guard Jordan. Marley was too slow, KJ too small, Dumas was a coke head but still decent/explosive. I still see Jordan's turn around J in my sleep when KJ was guarding him. It was obvious that the Suns were doomed. The Suns were all about winning in the regular season that year. They had the best record by far. Offensively they were great but their D was outscore your opponent. That was a recipe for disaster in the playoffs.
Don't forget the key to Barkley getting that ring is he didn't have Cedric Cebellos (injured) to guard Jordan . Jordan would have had to defend him too. Cebellos had the athleticism to bother him just a bit. He wouldn't have torched him the way he torched Marle.

Look at what he did in 1994 with an experienced team that 3-peated, he complained about the ball not going to him when he was down 0-2 and his coach showed he was a role player and his attitude shows he was a role player, not a franchise player or leader and what happened? Kukoc hit the shot and they won and what happened in game 5 in 1994? He fouled Hubert Davis and you were always taught NEVER to foul a guy taking a three point shot, now that was a bad call but they showed the foul on the screen in the telecast and where was Pippen in game 7 to help his team win? Where was Pippen's leadership and drive to enable his team to win? What about versus the Lakers when he was with Portland 2000 when he had a 15 point lead in the fourth quarter with a stacked team and a shot at the NBA Finals?... Remember, Pippen had 6 titles by that time and they needed his leadership and ability to win during those moments to close the deal and what happened? He couldn't close, he broke down and couldn't get it done...just like in game 7 in 1990 he left Jordan out to dry and in 1997 during the 'sick' game he left Jordan out to dry and did nothing to help Jordan or the team to even support.
So yes, Pippen is a role player -- a role player plays their role and you cannot rely on them to lead or take charge when the pressure hits or it's really time to win...so that's what Pippen actually did... he was on the Olympic Team due to Michael Jordan and was a top 50 player and HOF player due to Jordan not of himself, all he had to do was be there and support which he didn't do often but Jordan took him on a ride and he was happy now he's bitter because he allowed another man to make his career instead of Pippen taking charge of his own career. If we are to judge players by their off-court behavior, then Shaq is the Goat, His love of the common man and decency toward his fellow humans is legendary, and he is also extremely funny. But if we judge by playing, it's Jordan and Pippen along with Dennis rodman, as the best rebounder in the modern era. just my opinion based on the 12 years I watched the NBA and the level of physical play and defense in that era. Today's players can't be compared because they basically play a different game that is so controlled and staged that their accomplishments are manufactured by rule changes to try to save the game and bring back the fans, it will never happen. Money and political posturing has destroyed the game, and halfhearted defense to produce high scoring only sells to the young who weren't there in the 80's and 90's,

Pippen was an all-time great defensive player. Both players were great, however I would rather have Pippen on my team.
Barkley is the better individual player and would lead a franchise further than Pippen would. Pippen is a better complimentary player than Barkley was and would plug in all the weaknesses a team would have.

Barkley never won finals MVP in a losing effort. Jerry West I think is the only player to pull that off. Barkley is also a much better player than Pippen. It isn't close.
