Brilliant demo. I like to paint building in watercolour and your tips about this will be an enormous help. Achieving the authentic look is the challenge and I feel I am now better equipped for this.
I am just about to paint a picture that I have in front of me of an old inn with brick and flint. I didn't search for brick finishes, it was just there. Actually it has just been restored but I will use some of your tricks.
I am adding a little liquid charcoal to the paint. It makes for great textures. Unlike granulation but similar to wavy spider lines that float on the paint and break into patterns.
What is wrong with anyone that would say something negative about you? Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us! You have saved me so much time, energy and frustration.
I brought my paints out again and started painting because of your videos. They are so inspiring and your teaching method and techniques are eye opening. Thank you so much Michele.
"I know I'm doing well because I'm getting a lot of hateful trolls in the comments." Oh my god that made me cackle. I love your sense of humor. thanks for another tutorial!
You probably already know this, but it's a jealous reaction to your ability, knowledge and excellent teaching style. A good teacher always recognises another good teacher ... I had students fighting to get into my maths classes!
Michelle I would say I am a confident watercolourists sold art worldwide and I watch every video you post !! we can never learn too much or stop learning ,, do not for one second let those trolls upset you because I value you !! What you are teaching is quality content even for a professional artist love ya xx creative love from New Zealand
I LOVE the use of the wax!! I've painted brick walls before and wish I would have known about it then! I love the effect it makes and that I just learned something new! Thank you, Michelle! Suddenly I feel like painting a brick wall....
You are a life saver! Or rather a painting saver. Last night I ruined a door painting by messing up the surrounding walls. THIS will save it. Thank you so much!
I was so surprised to hear that you get hate comments. How ridiculous. It is so simple. If they don’t like the videos, they can find something else to watch. Theres is no need to be nasty. I find value in every video I watch -from every artist I follow, including you- No matter how many years you have been creating, there is always something to learn. WHen I think about it, painting ( or other creative arts like quilting, knitting, learning to play an instrument) is such a solitary activity. And it is for that reason that it is so useful to watch videos and take classes and socialise a little, so you can get exposed to how others do the same thing. It is so interesting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Great tutorial. Thank you! It amazes me that people have negative things to say to somebody who's generously offering excellent FREE information and techniques.
Thank you so much Michelle. I’m fairly new to watercolour painting and I’m trying to do a sketch in line and wash of our childhood home in England for myself and 3 siblings. I’m a bit nervous. Working from a GOOGLE EARTH photo capture and just looked on RUclips for Watercolour old bricks. It’s exactly what I need and I can’t tell you how pleased I am that I found you here. 🤩🤩🤩
Great video, i have viewed this video before and just watched it for the second time to refresh you memory as i am working on a painting with several old brick building. So glad I remembered this video to refer to for help! Thanks for a very helpful video.
Michele, what a good tip with the candle wax I must say I like your teaching and saw a lot of your video's . I am retired navy and now I think I found a new hobby so I will start with your beginners class I retired to Thailand so I can't follow your classes in person Maybe you could do some summer school courses in the future . I hope your set of paint from Jackmans will be good enough to follow your course, anyway Thanks for your youtube teachings
You will love the Jackman's paints. I do plan on doing art holidays etc in the future, we are in lockdown here currently. I am getting my vaccination today though!
Another brilliant video! Great ideas for brick walls and patterns in general. Makes me want to look for a landscape with bricks just to try it out. Appreciate your caution in not using/ruining good watercolor brushes with the oil pastel technique. Very useful & fun techniques - a joy to watch. Thanks so much Michele! ❤️🎨👍👍
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I've been angsting over what colors to use for bricks, and this helps a lot. I got a Dan Smith complete watercolor dot card, thinking it would help me pick out colors for bricks, but I just wound up with too many colors to choose from, esp. when some of them are so close in color. There's like 3 whole rows of colors on the dot card that could be used for bricks! The garnet genuine, deep scarlet, quin. burnt scarlet, quin sienna, fired gold ochre, and Turner quin Rust all look like they'd be good for bricks. Also, watching the wax and oil resists, you could probably use regular crayons for this too, and those have a point that can be sharpened, so you can be more precise with the lines.
Yes crayons can be useful too. Bricks come in all colours but for the red ones the red oxide pigments are good (these are often called English Red, Venetian red, and other names, it's all Red Oxide pigment) Burnt sienna, Paynes Grey and Yellow Ochre can be good too.
All of these techniques were great but particularly loved the candle wax technique for the mortar. I love painting old bricks, old wood, crumbling stucco walls, etc. Can’t wait to try some of these out! Thank you for your great videos! .
I've always enjoyed brickwork in paintings I really like those ones people do with old doors, weathered boards and windows surrounded with bricks and flowers. The candle wax and oil pastels was a neat trick and I really like that look. Thanks so much for this one very useful and I learned a lot and have a better idea of how to do them. Thanks, Michele and congratulations on 10K well deserved! x 🎨🖌
Wow I love how you have upped my brickwork techniques with sharing all of these techniques. I will have to try them out soon. I have also used Titanium Buff for sand, pathways and for face/portraits. I really like the wax residual and oil pastels techniques. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thank you for the tips on painting brick walls. I watched it while painting an old stone wall, (multitasking!) grabbed a scented candle and scraped a bit of wax on the stones with a cut up credit card. Really good tips which brought my wall to life. About to do some spattering when I can find a newspaper to block the rest of the painting. I love these your videos and have learnt a lot from them. Thank you.
Yes, I was also amused by you saying about the trolls. Im glad they dont put you off, because I like your videos and have learnt such a lot from you! Thank you!!
Michele I love watching your tutorials ou explain so it is easy to understand , I only started painting a few months ago , I am 74 . Love painting & find new techniques.
I love your videos ! I am an absolute beginner and brought all my materials to our house in Kefalonia I have an old olive tree with the sea in the distance and realised how bad I am after 3 attempts but determined to succeed and found your videos so helpful and this one will help with the terracotta pot resting on the tree - that is if I ever manage to paint the tree !!! Thanks
Wow, I so enjoyed that video, Michele! I'm really just a beginner but this looks like something fun to try, and I love the range of colors in your brick wall, I think I will see if I can reproduce your techniques. Also, along the same lines, I would love to see how you would do a cobblestone walk or road, if you have not done that already I would like to try that as well. Thanks so much for sharing your talents and your time!
Great ideas! I have not used a toothbrush for splattering as I am new to watercolor painting. So many techniques you've shared to make our paintings better. Thank you!
Michele greatly appreciated your calming approach to explaining how to painting bricks can be made easy, thanks and congrats on reaching high number of subscribers .
You are one of the best instructors. Many do not teach methods and tricks. You also have a clear way of presenting your information. I would be interested in knowing how many palettes you have and how you can keep them all nearby and handy.
Hi Kitty, I have four main palettes of the oblong shape I use in the video. Each has one primary and one secondary eg yellow and green, the fourth has earths and neutrals. But I have lots of other colours and brands too, which I recently sorted into colours and labelled in boxes which stack. (They are actually takeaway food containers!) Thanks so much for watching :-)
So hard to believe anyone could find something negative to say to or about you- but has all to do with what’s wrong with them. Hope you take solace and courage from the many, many more people who really love and appreciate all you do for us appreciative people. Love your content and your presentation.
Firstly how could anyone troll u, u seem really genuine. Your videos are always explained really well and good for all levels. I’ve learnt loads from watching.
I was in an en plein air workshop recently trying to paint brick. Not sure if these would work in that setting but it will be interesting to try. Thanks!
Another very helpful video! I was getting ready to paint an old door and brick wall of a photograph I took in Spain and feel more prepared now. I like the use of watercolor pencils to make lines and faults. Thanks for all the great tips!
Hello Michelle, I just found your channel this morning. Thank you so much for such an informative video. I have just quite recently become interested in watercolour and had not seen any of these techniques before.
Michele, I always learn so much from you... thank you. Your English accent reminds me of me grandmum. She was born in Saltley and immigrated to the USA. Congratulations on 10k.
You are very welcome. Ah, but Saltley is a completely different accent to me! Of course because I am British, I hear 100 different accents which you probably wouldn't even hear :-) Great story :-)
Love bricks. Does that make sense. I mean drawing and painting. Thank you for sharing your wonderful techniques. Have a wonderful weekend. From Australia 🇦🇺 😀😀. PS wax resist is brilliant.
Thanks very much for this Michele - some useful techniques here. If you ever have time, please can you show how you'd render a dry stone wall. Much appreciated. Take care.
Thank goodness for 'blocking' Michele. You can be dead sure that these individuals would never have the courage to make these comments to you face to face. How easy it is to be overly critical and unkind when you can hide behind the internet. But forget about that. Have only recently found you and I am already so impressed with the quality and breadth of the work you share with us. You are very talented and extremely generous so thank you and I will be a regular from now on. Loved this video.
Just found you Michelle and thank you for a very helpful and well explained demo. I have been painting for some time but not one of the teachers I had actually explained these tricks. Thank you so much for sharing. I am now subscribed and look forward to anything you are so kind to show.
Share your own tricks for painting bricks in the comments, and let me know if you are going to try any of mine!
Brilliant demo. I like to paint building in watercolour and your tips about this will be an enormous help. Achieving the authentic look is the challenge and I feel I am now better equipped for this.
@@gdossett302 Thanks so much!
In the Studio with Michele Webber I like to use a sponge to age bricks and add some green mold on the mortar
I am just about to paint a picture that I have in front of me of an old inn with brick and flint. I didn't search for brick finishes, it was just there. Actually it has just been restored but I will use some of your tricks.

I appreciate that! Just today someone called me *checks notes... Obnoxious and untrustworthy. Need a thick skin here on RUclips :-)
I brought my paints out again and started painting because of your videos. They are so inspiring and your teaching method and techniques are eye opening. Thank you so much Michele.
That makes it all worthwhile, thank you!
Beautifully explained and demonstrated! Thank you so much... Ive learnt a lot from this ❤️❤️

Those comments are made to undermine you by people who would like your talent but will never acquire any. Sad people who make such comments.
Outstanding Michele! Thank you for these marvelous techniques to create bricks walls. 😊
That candle wax tip is a game changer for brickwork!
Really interesting, everything new to me. I'm painting North German brick houses and didn't know how to go about it. Now I do, thanks 😊
Glad to help!

You are a watercolor goddess! Thank you, Michelle. I’ve learned so much from you. ❤
Wow, thank you!
These are all great tips! I’ve only done bricks once, and they came out kind of flat, so these are excellent things to try! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I am brand new to the art world… And I love Watercolors. You are a wonderful teacher, thank you so much for all that you do.
Thank you so much Penny!

Besides this being a great video, what you said about trolls was hilarious.
It just makes me laugh how much time and effort they waste looking at stuff they hate - I don't know how they find the time! :-)
I have avoided bricks because I just couldn’t make sense of them. This h
Is a great help. I can’t wait to try all of the techniques today. Thank you!
