    Just for the record, I'm running the rebranded Eton Elite 750 which I purchased from Universal Radio in late August 2020. Bottom line: I *love* it! It's a great performer on all supported frequencies. SSB is crystal clear due to the combination of the BFO and the variable RF gain with switchable AGC. Build quality seems outstanding. And it includes some extra features that weren't on the early Grundig branded versions. For example, I can hold down the 'SW' button to activate true ATS, and it scans all 14 International SW bands and stores received stations into memory page 00. Furthermore, it supports 100 stations on memory page 00 for SW scans. (AM/FM just support 50.) The unit also includes the less convenient documented shortwave scan functions as well. Now, it does cost more than the older runs. It's $399 at Universal Radio -- when they have it in stock. It's also sporadically available on Amazon at around $439 -- so you can support Tom through his Amazon store. I'm *really* happy I own this radio! To me, it's like an up-to-date version of my old Realistic DX-302, which has sadly stopped working.

    I bought a Grundig 750 about 5 years ago (the version that had metal knobs). It would not receive SSB so I sent it back, and I have used the replacement without problem ever since. These days I use other radios more for SW, but still use the 750 a couple of times each week. I find the SSB tuning effective, though finicky. I also think the wide bandwidth is a bit too wide, but other than that it has been a good radio. It is sensitive on both the whip antenna and (even better) on an external antenna. I find it useful to scale back on the RF gain once you find a station, as this seems to improve the signal/noise ratio.

    Hello Tom, I really enjoy your RUclips reviews. You had some influence on me in purchasing my Eton Elite 750. I purchased the radio from Amazon about a week ago and I received it this past Wednesday. Pretty fast shipping. One thing about Amazon is that they will ship to you fast. Also, Amazon has a great return policy if needed. The downside of this purchase was I had to pay $15.17 for shipping and $28.oo tax. $43 dollars and change for shipping and tax. Ouch! However, I unpacked the radio and installed 4 alkaline D cells, and tested the radio on all bands, and the radio is absolutely amazing! The sensitivity and selectivity are outstanding! HF SSB signals come across loud and clear. I did some late-night AM DXing and pulled in stations like WGN Chicago( over 1200 miles from me here in Bradenton, FL.) I live about 8 miles north of Sarasota/Bradenton International airport and I receive the control tower comms clearly on the VHF air frequencies. The radio is awesome! I am happy to own one. Thank you Tom for your RUclips reviews. Oh yeah, my listening to this radio, I only used the telescopic antenna on the radio and I was inside my house! Thanks again, sir.

    A few years ago I bought a Grundig field radio and it worked fine.
    In less then a years time the digital tuning went out and the frequencies jump by 20 -30 kc at a time.
    I called and emailed Grundig and received no response.
    Obviously there is a critical build quality issue in the manufacturing process as well as poor communications with customers.

    I bought a Tecsun PL660 and had to send it back because it was a poor performer. Evidently, there are good production runs- very good, and then there are just plain lousy ones. The 660 had excellent reviews so I chose it. I am through looking at the new radios to purchase. My old Sangean ATS 813 is the best radio I have had in over 30+ years of DXing. That, and my Kenwood transceiver is all I need, I guess.

      Tecsun radios are ok for the price but they perform far under the standards of Panasonic and Sony.
      I have both the PL 600 and 880.
      While I like them I find that they are not the performers I had hoped for.
      On AM they are barely fair at picking up weaker far off stations in the daytime.
      I have 3 low power stations that are about 50 miles distant that a good radio can pick up.
      The radios mentioned can't with out a loop antenna.

      Agreed! My most sensitive rig for AM listening is an old Kaito KA1103 with no whip antenna (it fell off- just came apart on me one day) and it is prone to changing freqs all by itself. Hooked up to a long wire, it is an excellent monitor for remote listening. It is a power hog. But, it works. The Sangeans are the best investment if you save your pennies. I own the ATS 803 as well. The old boat anchors like mine are very long lasting. Wish I had a Sony. They hold their own with the best of them.

      The only thing about the 1103 is the lack of craftsmanship and you almost need three hands to even turn down the volume. If it had been built to higher standards, and been built a little thicker so it had a lower center of gravity and held more, bigger batteries(?) and had a volume knob, it would be no doubt, one of the finest radios.

    • @hamrad88
      @hamrad88  3 года назад

      There are at least two key things needed. An external antenna. The built-in telescopic antennas on these radios are way too short especially for shortwave which you will hear stations 1000s of miles away. Second, shortwave listening right now it poor due to the solar activity which will be improving this year. As far as AM or MW, again the built-in antenna in this radio is too short. Also, on AM or MW you can only expect to receive stations 100s of miles away not 1000s except in rare occasions. So there are ways to improve the reception on This radio.
