Thank you for spending so much time with this difficult film. Seeing the press man moving our guys off their spots makes more sense on why we looked SO bad in the game. Also seeing the plays "work" with poor execution explains the play calling. Just a matter of getting it done. On to better days against NFC opponents ahead.
Thanks for the great work, Jonny. Outstanding breakdown. I know this game caused a lot of people a lot of angst. But the things you show in this video really help explain what *should* be some fixable issues if the team can stay disciplined and focused. This coaching staff is too good to miss and not teach to the things you identify here, and I am hopeful the players can make some of the necessary corrections. It also may bode well for later in the season that so many players from deep in the roster were forced into this game for so many plays, as this may be valuable experience that they can really learn from to become better, more reliable players later in the season. As we were discussing in the comments from your other video earlier this week, I think they are at a crossroads the next two games against Dallas and Tampa that will probably tell us a lot about what we can expect from this season. They either fail and it becomes a lost season, or they rise to the occasion, which keeps them competitive and in position to win the division and make a late-season run.
Thanks as usual Jonny this was a breath of fresh air. All is not lost but so much needs to be fixed. Despite injures, there are answers and I trust Shanahan and Brock to get this team right. Thank you for your hard work and keen insights.
The most frustrating thing to me is that even though they were playing with all the backups at WR and RB this was a winnable game if they execute, the plays were there to be made. Brock had his worst game with the INTs and coming up short on the long passes to Kittle and Cowing, well placed balls and we are talking touchdowns. Winning this game was huge from psychological perspective, to get the monkey off their back and unfortunately they fell short once again. Great breakdown as always!
On that first pic to Kittle. I would love to see that ran again where Mason keeps running for a wide open wheel route. Also, on the 3rd and 1 on the goaline at end of first half where we ran it…Mason had a nice hole for a TD and just decided to cut it back into the defense.

To win a super bowl in this league you need good players, good coaches, and good luck. We just run out of luck every year. Last year things started going our way then the football gods decided it was time for Greenlaw to snap his achilles in the freaking super bowl in a freak non contact injury. It seems this year injuries are rampant throughout the entire league, but jeez we are without our starting RB, our starting LB, now our starting WR, starting safety...
Best video breakdown in Niner land...clearly folks making mistakes but feels they can fix them....easier for us to see certain folks open so explain why Purdy didnt throw to Mason right away ?
Geez. It's tough to watch a video like this. I'm a huge fan of the niners and the channel but what a gut punch it is to be shown why your team sucked this bad. I feel like I just woke up in a haze with my pants around my ankles after a Diddy party
Thanks for that perspective JD. I watched enough to see what you're talking about with the complexities and "cascading" effects that can occur throughout the game regarding the offense. It is not as simple as "Shanahan can't scheme guys open" or "Purdy is not the guy". I see what you mean by the complexities from not just an X's and O's standpoint, but small intangible details that are going on between receiver and QB. (example for others by what I mean if you didn't watch): Receiver doesn't stem/break off their route at the correct depth and the timing is off with Purdy's drop (Conley's fault) Receiver breaks off route at the correct depth but Purdy overcompensates by throwing an extra 5 yards past them (Purdy's fault, not Bell's. INT.) and then you have the double whiff of the O-line where Purdy looked off the safety perfectly and had Aiyuk really feels like the injuries + Aiyuk's sluggish start to the season has really just thrown everything off and had a big trickle-down effect with the offense it seems like no matter what, Purdy has to continue to play within the system and remain disciplined.
Whenever the Niners get their rear end handed to them on a plate, this more didactic form of break down is much more helpful when trying to understand exactly what happened than your regular breakdown Jonny. Question: With many veterans seemingly ad libbing on their routes, what are they supposed to do if they are not able to carry out their assignment in the way it has been drawn up? Surely, during pre-season, when plays are installed, the coaches would tell the wide receivers to do X if they can't do Y? And wouldn't Purdy be aware of that too?
In a normal world, yes. But, these routes and things are all muscle memory, not just knowing how it is on paper. When you have receivers 1-3 out and #4 is in his first game, ever, those details will surely be off.
Don't you think that on the play starting around 18:00, Purdy didn't throw to Aiyuk because the linemen in his line of sight blocked his view? You have to remember qb's need a lane to throw through. This is pertinent for all qbs, tall or short.
This is why game reps are important, these receivers also should’ve been getting as much 1st team reps as possible even before Aiyuk and Deebo got hurt, we should also stay away from zone runs until CMC gets back
Purdy was pushing the throws downfield, probably because Kyle wanted him to be more aggressive against KC. The game plan was definitely different than usual. Some plays, the players seemed confused ... receivers not where the ball was thrown, confused Oline blocking, assignments not executed well, Purdy throwing into tight coverage and not seeing defenders, dropped 'catchable' passes ...
Appreciate the video, though I wish it was under better circumstances that I wanted to watch one of your videos. It's also sad that you're statistically underrated compared to other 49er content creators.
The modus operandi is the edited videos. I came down with a horrible migraine on Monday - the day I do the bulk of the film work, that made staring at a computer for 9 hours not possible. That's why the video is in this format.
It sucks that we’ve lost our attention to detail like we’ve had in previous years. Maybe we can increase practice time during the weeks to make sure we are on out ps and qs
Man, that is a lot to stomach. I think I'm gonna need a strong dose of the NFCCG vs. Detroit to cleanse out the system after this. Also, that "stay healthy" in the sign-off hits a lot harder after these last couple of games. On the subject of Shanahan vs. Spagnuolo, though, I think there is something to that chess match being an important factor. Watching these plays, I'm seeing an awful lot of safeties and linebackers jumping on our receivers' routes really quickly. They definitely seemed to have a very good idea of what route combinations we run, and what to expect when they see certain keys.
After watching your video it feels like the KC defense was locked in and the 49ers offense was not. Hard to say why the offense was off, maybe it was deebo and JJ being out so the other receivers had to do things they're not used to doing. I think the KC def is probably the best in the league, so it's tough seeing the offense having a bad game on the week they really can't afford to.
Appreciate you taking the time to break down the film. Do you think Brock has the arm strength to hit kittle and cowing in stride on those throws or is that not a club he has? Not trying to troll I'm genuinely curious abt ur opinion.
This is good stuff and I agree with you. However, Purdy completely missed his check down on this play and he has done this far too much this season. His check down was wide open! The db had his hips turned towards Aiyuk and Collin’s and was 6 yards off the receiver.
Great, honest breakdown. Just curious, but what do you think are the top 2-3 things they need to do to correct this mess especially having lost Aiyuk for the season?
Thank you #JD49... Man. that was difficult to watch. WR's running wrong routes. Bad decisions by Brock. Bad blocking by the team, and of course poor game management by Kyle. What a disaster of a game. That might be the worst game I've ever seen Brock play combined with the worst coaching performance by Kyle. Why would they lay down against a rival like that?
Why does it seem like our guys never run through the defender vs man-to-man when they are 5 yards deep? A lot of the film you showed the defender was 5 yards deep, flat footed, and our WR's tried to run around them. If they run "through" the defender they could get illegal contact down field, right? Watching this just make it seem like our guys don't know how to run routes when in man coverage - defenders force them right where they want them to go. Just like all your other videos, a lot of this can be fixed, but the problem is, is we're not fixing them. :/ Great video (as always) - like the new direction.
The Chiefs did a good job of planting at 4-5 yards and initiating contact then, when it was legal. The Chiefs also got away with too much contact downfield
omfg that first pick play if he would have got it to jordan mason it would been a TD. there was literally NOBODY on that side of the field and mason was there all by himself. DAMN! hopefully purdy sees this on the tape.
I mean, I'm pretty sure if a team wanted to know our plays, they could ask the players who've been in the system. Mike McDaniel joked a couple years ago that people could buy their playbook online. The playbook is 450 pages.
So if Kittle had just ran his route wouldn't that have been a completion? I suppose it would have been a risky throw still given the layering, but is that one more on Kittle than Purdy?
Honestly it looks like these timing routes are getting brock in trouble maybe a lil more freestyle play would help cuz Honestly on the 3rd throw to aiyuk aiyuks open when he decides to break the route and he's open for a big one and brock has time i see this from the chiefs all the time plays not there receivers break off and try to find a soft spot and mahomes hits em for a huge gain i just feel like kyle wants brock to stick to 1 way and 1 way only
On that first dagger play you reviewed, the backside route seemed to beat his man and the safety seemed to be out of position. Is Brock supposed to get all the way through the reads and rip it to the backside route? It could have been a TD if he was able to see it.

Why do these issues happen with a team that has been together for a while? Shouldn’t they just pick up where they left off at the end of the last season?
So on the first interception. I agree he shouldnt throw it blind, but we arent talking about a pick if Kittle runs the right route. Youre seeing the deeper we go into this game, Purdy is not feeling confident that guys will do what he expects which causes him to pause and not play with timing. He should "just move on to the next play" but hes not used to this level of disfunction. Hes a young QB dealing with an offense that is operating at a level hes not used to. Its easier said than done for him to move on to the next play
Dear Jonny, I hate being a hater but.. 99% of your viewers are looking for your opinions and breakdowns of the 49ers game play. Sorry that you aren't feeling well. Many presenters feel the need to inject their personal issues. We only subscribe to hear your opinion about the 49ers. Tough love to a guy who really gives great breakdown.
Why do I feel like shanahans offense always has one option basically and everything else is always shutdown or not really viable. If the shut down the primary the play always is a dud. Not to mention if we’re running with Conley, Pearsall and cowing, can’t we run more friendly easy dump off plays? Look at reid’s offense. When the receivers go down he adjusts and not only that if mahomes is off he does little things to get him going. Shanahan seems persistent on running his way and his way only. His was isn’t working. His way loses the big games. His way doesn’t adjust to the pace of the game. It’s honestly infuriating.
it seems like they just conceded this game and it's kinda disgusting. All week the coaches and players were like "just another game" and "we won't avenge the SB this week" (paraphrasing some). This is factually true but not the attitude to take and not inspiring confidence from the fanbase. Even if you lost that and gave it all and minimized mistakes it could be flushed. However, you went into the game EXPECTING TO LOSE and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. You made damn sure to crap that thing away and leave no doubt that And Reid and Co. live completely rent free (on multiple penthouse floors) in your heads. That was a chickenshit loss and Jed should be ashamed of what his team put out there last Sunday. Your fans put their hard-earned $$ out to go watch that? Really? I'm not putting this entirely on Kyle either; the players need to execute as well but leadership and accountability starts at the top and filters down and we got NO ACCOUNTABILITY SHANAHAN AT THE HELM.
These videos show me that Jordan Mason is really not that good, from a technical standpoint. He’s a tough runner but it seems like he’s consistently reading wrong.
@@rudysal1429 it shouldn’t. And it doesn’t. If you watched this video and didn’t see an issue with the numerous mistakes on every play idk what to tell you. Shanahan has been fine. Players aren’t executing.
@nathangothan601 coach isn't fine if players are constantly making that many mistakes. That's a coaching issue. He needs to figure out how to hold players more accountable and perform better.
Absolutely love Brock. But this was by far his worst game as a pro. Even the 4 ints last year in Ravens game there was a sensible reason for it. Tipped balls etc. This game Brock did not play confidently at all. Overall, he just doesn't look comfortable in pocket this year. Could almost guarantee it at this point that you will see a different qb when CMC returns. Top 3 wideouts missing this game I'll give Brock a pass. Just wish he could adjust better.
Good news is that Brock Purdy’s contract extension should now be cheaper! With all of Brock Purdy’s red zone turnovers this year, he’s starting to remind me of Jimmy Garappolo! Stop copying Jimmy Garappolo man, unless you want to be traded to the Raiders!
Brock in all of our losses miss reads off target throws under throws that should be tds scrambling when it’s not needed he looks like Jimmy G now Kyle be dialing it up but needs his qb to execute honestly I feel we should move Brock to a bench player and look for another option because if the limited qb isn’t going to have elite intangibles anymore then why play him
Understanding the “why” helps me stomach the losses more to be honest. Appreciate the work you do on these videos

Seeing these route running errors from our vets is troubling. Feels like they're losing "trust" in the system.
1st play Purdy should of given it to Mason hope he could be the lb for a gain
Dear Jonny,
I hate being a hater but..
@jamesallen8418 I'm sorry but I'm confused as to what exactly you're referring to?
Why do I feel like shanahans offense always has one option basically and everything else is always shutdown or not really viable. If the shut down the primary the play always is a dud. Not to mention if we’re running with Conley, Pearsall and cowing, can’t we run more friendly easy dump off plays? Look at reid’s offense. When the receivers go down he adjusts and not only that if mahomes is off he does little things to get him going. Shanahan seems persistent on running his way and his way only. His was isn’t working. His way loses the big games. His way doesn’t adjust to the pace of the game. It’s honestly infuriating.
He has played with out players and still won now he does not have cmc smh
My favorite copium is your vids lmao
it seems like they just conceded this game and it's kinda disgusting.
Chiefs whooped dat ass
Deebo route running is terrible, he to slow and rounds every route no break down at the hips
These videos show me that Jordan Mason is really not that good, from a technical standpoint. He’s a tough runner but it seems like he’s consistently reading wrong.
@@nathangothan601 Mason has been alright but you also see why the Shanahan's have pumped out RB's and also why CMC is so different
@jonnydel shouldn't depend on one player. Need to fix the OL and KS needs to be forced to get an OC to bring new ideas into the offense
All this rookie doesn't know how run route
Poor coaching, poor execution. Same story different game.
Just tell the truth: Brock was horrible! He continues to ignore his check downs and it hurts him and the team.
Brock in all of our losses miss reads off target throws under throws that should be tds scrambling when it’s not needed he looks like Jimmy G now Kyle be dialing it up but needs his qb to execute honestly I feel we should move Brock to a bench player and look for another option because if the limited qb isn’t going to have elite intangibles anymore then why play him
What contract extension? He plays badly vs. Dallas he's getting benched.
The cheifs had our number again, fire kyle shanman, trade for a wide receiver that can beat man coverage.
Look at the video, then comment
Me, understanding the "WHY'S" doesn't help me understand what my eyes saw!🫠😂😂🤣🤣
