The Castle of Ioannina is built on the southeastern tip of the city, on the small rocky peninsula that enters Lake Pamvotida. It took its present form during the late Ottoman period having incorporated much of the earlier Byzantine fortification. We do not know exactly when the city was founded and the castle nor where its name came from. The outer enclosure of the walls has a perimeter of about 2000 meters and encompasses an area of ​​200 acres. The floor plan of the castle is in the shape of an irregular table. During the Byzantine period it surrounded the whole city. Kept in relatively good condition. The fortification enclosure is currently ranging from 8.85 m to 13.69 m in the castle, in two lightly elevated spots, there were 2 acropolis (inner fortresses): The northeast Acropolis with the Aslan Mosque and the Southeast Acropolis or Itch Kale with the Fetish Mosque and the Bohemund Tower. Outside the two acropolis surface of the castle is covered by houses of the old town. It is a modern district within the old walls.
