First 20 years or so of my life, I lived near Redditch, Worcestershire. Milwards needles have been based in Redditch since the 1600s - the history is fascinating and well worth looking into - the best paid job was needle sharpener - they earned more than doctors (but rarely lived beyond 30 years old) - they used water mill driven whetstones, no safety gear, so the constant spray of grinding dust and metal debris into their faces clogged up their lungs or blinded them - even so, they resisted all attempts to improve safety conditions, because they didn't want to reduce their wages.
