Recently got my dad's No 44 rebate plane. Never used it but looking forward to my first try. Like you Darren the depth stop was lost. I didn't have the tools to make a new one so spent a couple of weeks on eBay until one came on line. As you say it's fairly rare so commands a premium - expensive for what it is but that's life, at least now I can get started.
Great video , could you tell me please what type of mill you have because im looking for a mill of similar size . Thanks
@@potatodemon1607 hey thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I was gonna get a new mill from ( arceurotrade ) they do good hobby mills and lathes. But I checked eBay daily for mills and came across the one I have, it’s a 1970 Korean mill called naerok< Korean backwards lol. It’s a solid mill for what it is. But need bringing back to life, check my channel for that video.
@Darren_Barclay Thanks for your reply Darren
Stress,depression had me rolling😂
You should do the battery tie down and oil cap as well!
@@liam14452 good idea man.
The hand plane collection is growing there buddy, you keep at what you are doing, very talented man 👍🏼
Great job Darren!
Based on the amount of time, effort and expertise that you’ve put into this, I am amazed you only put a £300 valuation on this… you should frame it and auction it at the V&A…?!
@@philipB31 lmao, thanks for the comment.
Love the one with the border around it,I’m looking forward to seeing how you make the Finish
My complaint with cheap plane is the steel in the blade, they generally do not hold an edge.
@@monteglover4133 yeah, the blade on this one dull after 5 minutes of use.
At £10 I could make that work fine with a decent blade. Close the mouth if necessary by moving the frog. Flatten the sole on my edge sander. Most Stanleys have loads of backlash. Sharpen the blade on my Worksharp. In all 30 minutes. Better to work on an old Stanley or make a wooden one with a Veritas hardware kit.
Sometimes you just get lucky with these things. I made a no.3 out of a 99p ebay donor and various spares I had lying around and it's easily my favourite smoother. Good to watch, thank you.
I would expect to spend a couple of hours fettling. Any new plane especially a Stanley. Your one seems to be a very soft casting.
@@terryandrews49 yeah the body is really soft, you seen in the video how scratched up it got just tilting on my bench.
I am watching tool restoration videos since 2020 , especially about planes, and always wondered why isn't anyone using a milling machine.....I can now say that finally someone used common sense. Thanks a lot for this video lad.
@@vladimirmarinescu137 Thanks man glad you enjoyed the video and yeah common sense lol.
I doubt many woodworkers have a milling machine, particularly those who would buy a £10.00 plane
Hello from Canada. I really enjoyed your video about making a flat plate. I'm about the make one for hand lapping. Hey'a fr'Can-da. I fasht ur video 'bout makin ' a fl' pleat. I'm ofta make un fer han' lapin'. all kidding aside: keep up the guid werk!!!
With cheaper planes be prepared to lap the sole a second time in a few months. Would be surprised the change as the cast iron really settles.
It’s now a Lie-Darrensson 😂
@@contessa.adella lol good one.
Great to see the process of fixing this up, learnt a lot more than I was expecting, awesome job man.
@@plausibledeniability2941 thanks man glad you enjoyed it and learned from it.
Nice work and a great result, shame about the handle though. This will be really helpful to ones who are on a budget but have the time to carry out the work.
Nice work there to improve a bit of crap as you say £10
Nice Job Darren. Ive done 5 Stanleys, no 3 up to number 5 1/2, tedious work but well worth the effort. your Spear and Jackson might improve with a blade upgrade, the steel looked soft. Great video pal, keep up the good work 👋👍
It's a shame to see a nice rosewood handle used on such a low-quality plane, it's an endangered species, there won't be any more Rosewood plane handles for a very long time. Also, applying oil to rosewood spoils its natural beauty and turns it black. Instead, sanding with progressively finer grits and finishing up with ultra-fine wire wool will help the natural oils in the rosewood take on a fine, natural luster. Finally, a few coats of shellac will complete the finish beautifully.
£10 initial purchase plus £100+ in labour and abrasives, if doing it by hand, to make them right. These super cheap Indian planes just aren't worth it.
@@SuperiorModel yeah unfortunately I agree, lol.
Try closing the mouth down, by moving the frog closer the toe, and check the cap iron might need reshaping
@@garrypalmer5014 I’ll try that, thanks
Absolutely the mouth/frog adjustment is way out. Also the back iron fit needs improving.
Here’s the link to the plane>> amzn.eu/d/2wVqxAP
Hi
@@avairvine8802 hey
Great job Darren
VPI paper is not the same as greaseproof paper
@@johncuthbert1888 basically the same. Well it never done its job really, since it was the moisture that built up on that paper, I debated whether to even put it in, it’s a fine replacement.
The only difference between them is one has wax and the other silicone.
@@Darren_Barclay The difference is that one has something, typically a volatile salt of a high molecular weight amine which acts as a corrosion inhibitor. It doesn't last forever; that goes with the territory of being volatile. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volatile_corrosion_inhibitor
@@johncuthbert1888 yeah I get it, but the silicone grease paper is a suitable substitute, especially the price. That was the point in doing them, I wanted to do them without spending a lot of money, I could have just bought new ones.
Great job buddy, hard work and patience payed off, shame about the microphone but you rescued the video, time spent in the workshop is always therapeutic even if it’s a long tedious 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Well done, Darren, jings you have some amount of patience. The slips look spot on. Great job 👏 👌
Good job, I'm sure you'll get stick for them not being factory accurate any more but as long as they are accurate enough for what you want to do with them they are fine. I would be tempted to try and get a more accurate micrometer and a known good standard, measure them all and make up a chart with the sizes.
@@WobblycogsUk yeah I had thought about that, but I was happy that they are good enough. Its definitely a smart idea to know exactly what they measure and how much they are off.
I think a lot of people are gonna be triggered by this video so be prepared for that. The blocks were unusable from the start though because of rusting so no harm done and you have a set that you like and enjoy so good for you. I would however not use these as gauges. The accuracy you should trust these to will be the same as the accuracy you can read on a set of calipers, anything that needs higher accuracy should be measured using gauge blocks within much tighter tolerances of what yours are in now. These I would just put on a shelf as a nice piece of workshop furniture. I would also suggest you use the ratchet on your micrometer to get a more precise reading, otherwise you risk over tightening. Thanks for making content for us to watch.
You have made them better than they were when you got them. I call that a good job and as long as you are happy with them seen as how you are the one using them then thats all that matters. Proud of you no matter what
I don't like this at all., I do understand the acid and polishing part but the idea of measuring with a caliper and milling them is just no good.
@@spuhr_ex_gunsmith7375 I hear you, I spent days thinking about it, then I just went, might as well try I knew I wasn’t gonna use the imperial set. Rest assured I’ve got myself another incomplete set with the ones missing so think I’ll just swap them, but as said in the video, they measure pretty good, they will be off a few hundred microns but good enough for me. But remember they were a rusted mess, surely ive made them better no.
While you may be able to clean them up you can never make them true.
@@robertfontaine3650 true to what scale but, am not making parts that have to be true down to the microns, they are good enough for me, the measurements don’t lie.
The funniest moment in my life I was with my brother and our friend was showing off his woodworking project he just finished and he mentioned how the top was perfectly dead flat and me and my brother looked at each other and burst out laughing…. Our family owns a machine shop; I worked there for a few years and my brother made a career out of it…. Him and I have had conversations about measuring and achieving flatness during beer consumption sessions…😂😂😂
Great work!
Nice work, nothing quite so satisfying as making something that you otherwise can’t buy.
Nicely done. Great result.
£400 a pop you should start making them for half the price 😊
its just a knob 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome work, but beware wearing gloves running a lathe almost lost my hand. Luckily I pulled my hand threw a 12 mil nitrile glove to break free, sounded like a gunshot I got away with just a few stitches and lost the feeling in a finger. Thanks for sharing!!
@@BumSupport glad you liked it, yeah I usually don’t wear gloves am just sick of red hot chips been thrown at me lol, alls good.
