"To the Nth Degree" (Sonata No. 3) for piccolo and piano (2012) by Matt Smith (b. 1984). Christine Erlander Beard, piccolo; Christi Zuniga, piano. The 3rd International Piccolo Symposium. The University of Nebraska at Omaha. July 14, 2013.
Written for Christine Beard, both the title "To the Nth Degree" and the work's recurring motive were inspired by the composer's brother, Dan, who takes jokes a little bit too far (i.e. to the "Nth degree") which gets on Matt's nerves. The sonata has enjoyed a series of premieres by Beard, including UNO (January 2013), Costa Rica (April 2013), Canada (July 2013), IPS (July 2013) and the NFA Convention in New Orleans (August 2013).
