  • I would happily argue that pretty much everyone in the aquarium hobby has seen a Zebra Danio, you may not have known what it was you were looking at, but you will have seen one. They are incredibly popular little fish that are renowned for being incredibly hardy and incredibly easy to breed. they essentially incredible fish.
And this video is all about the Zebra Danio.
My favourite fishy stuff! (yes these are affiliate links :) )
    Lights
Nicrew Classic LED - amzn.to/3fG3Uv6 - Traditional led light that's got a nice high output in a white/cool colour range. Makes plants look extra green.
Nicrew SKY - amzn.to/3Ktn45U - really nice light for natural looking tanks, also the one I use for filming.
    Filters
Pat Mini - amzn.to/3fE1u0k - popular for a reason, just a superb little filter thats great for shrimp tanks and fish alike.
ASAP - amzn.to/3nBuytp - the old favourite and the one i return to most frequently.
    Air Pump
AP-3 Kit : amzn.to/34UMA3q - Great little air pump, not a silent runner, but has been very reliable for me.
    Tanks
Scaper 45 - amzn.to/3KBxG2H - a lovely high quality tank that comes with a super strong light, and a decent enough hang on back filter - perfect for newbies and scapers alike.
    My filming stuff
    Camera - Cannon 200D - amzn.to/354OLlc - nice camera, easy to use.
BigTripod - Manfrotto befree - amzn.to/3GLXDdj - pricey but super sturdy and can take being knocked over a lot by clumsy operators.
Lil' tripod - amzn.to/355WmQs - can't pronounce the name but it's been a good tripod for filming things on tables or when I have tanks on the floor.

These were among the first species I kept when I started keeping tropical fishes back in 1972. I had just moved to London to start my new job as a junior lab technician in a small college at the university, and managed to get a bedsit across the road from college. A colleague gifted me a small acrylic tank and I stocked it with zebras and medakas. They did very well in hard London tap water although I never got any fry - they always got to the eggs before I did. I would add one observation on distinguishing the sexes, and that is I found that the males' stripes were gold, whereas the females' stripes were silver (at least, they were back in those days).

    • @majorbruster5916
      @majorbruster5916 2 года назад +1

@@Steves_fish Yes, they do. But only when they are mature and well fed. Often, in dealer's tanks they are not, that's why you are always recommended to buy a group to ensure you get both sexes. Besides, they move so fast that this distinction goes unnoticed, it's more noticeable in wild specimens.

I recently got a shoal of 6 for my outdoor mini pond. At first they were quite shy, but after a few weeks they became much more outgoing and will swarm at the surface whenever I approach! I also have a shoal of pearl (Albolineatus) danios, who are just as fun and energetic.
Danios in general are too underrated in the hobby, its good to see them getting some more recognition. I'm currently trying to get my hands on some gold ring danios, but nobody seems to carry them. Do you have any other danios you plan on making videos about?

I'm new to aquariums, I bought a 100×40×40 tank with the intention of keeping cold water fish, primarily white cloud mountain minnows, I saw another video suggesting zebra danios would be comfortable with white clouds then I found your channel and this video which cemented my desire, my five zebra and white clouds have been really enjoying their 160 litre home for three days now and it's a joy to watch them explore the rock caves and swim hard up stream and glide back down stream, thanks for the information, very helpful. 👍❤️🇬🇧

I just started myself with zebra & leopard Danios in a 75 gal & they are doing great
just wondering what type filter system to use to keep them happy & safe right now
I have a small pump in it to keep the water moving & filtered till I get what I need
which I'm thinking of a diy air filter setup that I can do easily & cheap.

@@raisinggoldfishonabudget7058 I'm using an internal filter of 1200 litres an hour in a 160 litre tank, this is creating a powerful flow of water which the minnows and danios seem to really enjoy. 👍

@@Steves_fish yeah I've noticed how fast the danio hoover the food, I use tetra multi colour crisp food, I sprinkle whole crisps into the tank, the danio go for those and take a while to eat them, at the same time I sprinkle crushed crisps into the tank, the minnows then have time to hoover up the smaller bits of food. Seems to be working well so far. 👍

I plan on adding some to my 20 gallon long river aquarium. There will be medium flow, it will house a school of paleatus corydoras, zebra danios, and some white clouds.
Due to their popularity and fecundity, they are usually pretty inbred. Unless more people advocate to outcross their breeding stock more often (and recommend to buy your breeding stock from different sellers or taking advantage of wild fish, quarantining them), the genetic health of aquarium fish will continue to degrade until they become more “sensitive”.
But to end my comment on a good note, they are basically tiny stripped trout or salmon that anyone could keep in an aquarium. What is there not to love?
