Going from undrafted to playing his way through summer league into an All Star Point Guard and NBA Champion with Toronto Raptors, Fred VanVleet tested the free agency waters and landed himself a $130M contract with the Houston Rockets and is sitting down with Ryan, Fred and Channing to talk about his journey and what’s next.
Sharing his story about how at age 5 VanVleet’s life changed after his father was killed and struggling with the pressures of not going down same path and creating a different life for him, VanVleet has always approached the game of basketball with a chip on his shoulder and betting on himself.
This approach led him to score the most points in a championship game by an undrafted player in the 2019 NBA finals and help lead his team to a title.
Struggling with the choice to stay in Toronto or have a fresh start with a struggling franchise, VanVleet accepted the challenge to start over in a new city and hopes to make an immediate impact as a leader with the young Rockets’ roster.
Ryan asks him what he does for fun and if he ever smiles, as he’s known for his serious all work attitude but as usual Channing and the guys get him to break the ice and share a few laughs and stories.
New episodes of the Pivot every Tuesday at Noon est and Fridays at 3:30p est.

Fred's freshman year at WSU -- he hit a game winner against St. Louis. Split a double team and hit a floater for the win. Beautiful. The next day he walks into my store to look at getting a new phone -- I see him and yell Van Vleet! He chuckles it off. The matronly woman I am helping is sitting at my table. She asks me if that is who she thinks it is. I informed her that it was. She was a season ticket holder for the Shockers and had just found out that she had cancer. She asked me to ask Fred if he would take a picture with her. I asked him -- he did. And he gave me an autograph to boot. I've run into him a few more times since then -- always class personified. Could. Not. Be. Happier. For. him. (also I took the pic on my phone so I still have it)

He's arrogant as fuck and overvalues himself massively. Wait until this pointguard who thinks he's a shooting guard throws up brick after brick, constantly tries to monopolize the dribble and last shot. Unlike Lowry, Fred will never put himself in the paint to draw a charge--which was crucial for Toronto in close matches. He's the most overpaid PG in NBA history, no way he's getting 43 M a year, he's worth 20 M a year at much, he's not top 10 PG in today's NBA, not even top 15 PG and he's getting that contract, damn NBA likes to gift money
