I was at this race. This was my first Nascar race ever. I was close to the bottom row. We had a scanner. We knew they where gonna end under caution. So we left before the end. I'm glad we did. We could have been hit by beer cans.
I went to several races growing up in the eighties and early nineties and back then it happened at every race. I can remember being 15 years old at the first Winston at night at Charlotte Motor Speedway and it happened to Davey Allison and Kyle Petty when they crossed the finish line wrecking each other. People were mad that Earnhardt spun in turn 3 trying to hold them off. Back then the way you got rid of your cans was to throw them down to the walkway in front of the stands. Cans were flying the entire race. It was truly awesome and kind of hard core back then.
one of the coolest memories of my life. I was there that weekend, first race I've ever been to. I was 10 years old. I met Jeff Gordon at the hall of fame Friday night, which was amazing for as big of a gordon fan as I was. being in a sea of Earnhardt fans as he won was amazing, except for beer being spilled on me from folks throwing their cans as hard and far as they could.
He was VERY aggressive that year. He'd often move the other drivers out of the way to get up front when it'd be only partially through the race. And then he's slam the door on any cars getting a run on him.
I think one more thing that would've been great in this video is the explanation as to why NASCAR didn't go back green if it was just a one car spin. Even I'm not sure, honestly.
One of my favorite races of all time. As a die hard Gordon fan and only 9 years old at the time I didn’t understand why fans were showering Gordon with all that litter. For me at least it made the win thar much better as a Gordon fan.

I remember this race as well as the following one in 2005.. Jeff whooped the fields ass in 05. Led 130 something out of 188. That was the final nail in the coffin for DEI plate dominance
Its funny cause the fans that threw the cans and shit all over the track got either arrested or lifetime bans from the track. I remember that race and then remembering later that week on the radio it was announced that fans got hit with lifetime bans from the track during a sports news segment on the local radio station in the town I live in. I really hope it was worth it for those fans that got banned from the track.

You also looked at Tobey McGuire in Spider-Man Far From Home and went “who’s that old guy?” 2004. Soon to be 20 years ago. 2004. When it was socially accepted to Beer Bomb a racetrack
I remember that race. I'm pretty sure JG had a Pepsi car that day. Jr's sponsor at the time was Budweiser Beer. So guess what the still on the track Pepsi car got pelted with Boys & girls ?
And to add to this, the following race was won by Gordon at Fontana. I was there, and I was disappointed to see my contingent of fans throw more beer cans onto the track after the checkered flag, and there was no question that Gordon had won it that time.
It's sort of funny how this race ended up turning NASCAR into the clown show that it is today with the overtime rule leading to countless cars upside down and on fire in the catch fence at the end of every plate race, and how IndyCar could have gone down the exact same rabbit hole after the 2002 Indy 500 - which ended exactly the same way as this race - but didn't.
I sometimes wonder what if one of the other top 5 cars that day (Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, or Robby Gordon) had been in the lead when that last caution flew Had an RCR car ended up winning…… is that viewed any differently by the fans in the stands?
I was at this race! 13-14 year old me wishing I had a beer can or bucket to launch from the upper deck. At least it wasn’t jimmy. That was a cool Pepsi car too.

I was at this race. This was my first Nascar race ever. I was close to the bottom row. We had a scanner. We knew they where gonna end under caution. So we left before the end. I'm glad we did. We could have been hit by beer cans.
Can we throw cans at the Start/Finish interviews so they move them back to victory lane?? 😎😎🤣🤣🤣
Can you do a video on why Steward was put on probation in ‘04
He was VERY aggressive that year. He'd often move the other drivers out of the way to get up front when it'd be only partially through the race. And then he's slam the door on any cars getting a run on him.
As a #24 fan, this is one of my favorite visuals of all time.
I think one more thing that would've been great in this video is the explanation as to why NASCAR didn't go back green if it was just a one car spin. Even I'm not sure, honestly.
“150,000 fans booing Jeff Gordon”…as a Gordon fan since the 90s as a kid, this was definitely nothing new lmao.
This just seems to be the Nascar equivalent of the 2021 F1 season finale
Regardless of the outcome of this race, I feel bad for the crews who had to clean that mess up.
Was truly a history altering event. Never forget watching as a kid.
One of my favorite races of all time. As a die hard Gordon fan and only 9 years old at the time I didn’t understand why fans were showering Gordon with all that litter. For me at least it made the win thar much better as a Gordon fan.
As a 16 year old Jr fan at the time I know Jr won that race but Nascar gave it to Gordon anyway
Whoa. I thought they'd just pelt him with Pepsi. That he doesn't deserve either.
Today the fans don't throw beer cans, they go to Twitter.
As a Jeff Gordon fan, I was so happy when he won that day. And the fact they ended the DEI dominance made it sweeter. Especially with the Pepsi car.. I did feel like they should've had a shootout to finish the race though
I was there on the front row, talk about wild
Some constructive criticism: for the little side notes that you show in white text- consider putting them in a contrasting box so it is easier to read. You could even make a style macro or something for some personal touch.
I was 4 years old at this race (Gordon fan) and this video sent me a wave a of nostalgia, I could only remember the paint job Gordon had and that he won and people threw garbage at him🤣I grew up going to dega once a year and saw some insane finishes, I still keep up with nascar some but really miss Gordon, Jr, and Jimmie, nascar at its peak.
Great stuff, what race was this?
I remember watching this live as a kid. As a jr fan man I was so pissed!! Crazy to see how far the sport has shrunk. Back in those days that kind of viewer/fan turn out was just seen as common but looking back it’s crazy how popular the sport was.
That Pepsi Shards car ❤🙌
Finishing at the scheduled distance was one rule I'm glad was done away with.
I was there that year lol. That was wild!
I remember how pissed Jeff Burton was at Tony for the big wreck.Tony had a eventful next couple of weeks after this with he and Rusty getting together at Fontana and his spat with DW on the Pre Race Show before Richmond
Wow 13 million viewers at home. That number seems unfathomable today :(
I wasn’t watching nascar yet at the time so I never saw this live
Oh really another. I love Geoff Gordon video. That gives me such a feeling deep down in my stomach. Hang on a minute while I take a couple shots of Pepto
I remember this race as well as the following one in 2005.. Jeff whooped the fields ass in 05. Led 130 something out of 188. That was the final nail in the coffin for DEI plate dominance
NASCAR finishing races under yellow was the dumbest way to have a race.
Ahhhh the good ol days being a 10 year old Gordon fan. Everyone wanted to beat me up😅
I was at this race. At the track we were told green flag was coming but when Gordon was placed in first ppl went stupid.
That day I wanted a 48 win but was satisfied with a 3rd place finish.
48fan4life!!
Jeff had some really good pepsi paint schemes in the mid 00s. Ashame none went to victory lane after 07 Dega.
I remember this! My dad was pissed!
Imagine him having to do his interview on the front stretch
11:01 I was at that event. That was crazy.
2004. If you were born that year, you are likely in College or are about to start college. You are also old enough to vote. You also looked at Tobey McGuire in Spider-Man Far From Home and went “who’s that old guy?” 2004. Soon to be 20 years ago. 2004. When it was socially accepted to Beer Bomb a racetrack
I was there, it was an absolute mess! They could have definitely had another shot but Earnhardt country wanted to show their colors
I remember when Jrs engine blew up at the fall race after he announced he was going to Hendrick. I wonder how that happened? StepMom?
I remember when they poured beer on dale sr at the winston one year when wrecked. Its a rite of passage lol
I remember that race. I'm pretty sure JG had a Pepsi car that day. Jr's sponsor at the time was Budweiser Beer. So guess what the still on the track Pepsi car got pelted with Boys & girls ?
I was a 7 year old nascar fan at this race. It was scary being a jeff gordon fan. Jr fans were the absolute worst
I was a 16 year old Jr fan at the time and Jr fans are the best
@@nascarandrc8296 the best at being drunken buffoons.
@@GoodOlRoll nope best at being class acts
@@nascarandrc8296 class acts don't throw beer at another driver when their guy doesn't win the race.
@@GoodOlRollur an idiot 😂😂
And to add to this, the following race was won by Gordon at Fontana. I was there, and I was disappointed to see my contingent of fans throw more beer cans onto the track after the checkered flag, and there was no question that Gordon had won it that time.
As part of Junior nation, I LOVED this. As a NASCAR fan...I also loved this. 8, 88 and now 48!!! LESSSS GOOOOO!!!
As somebody who attended this race, a lot of people were just mad at NASCAR. Not really Gordon as much. Some people sure.
Just crazy that they couldn't "clean up" or get the track ready in time to go back green
I sometimes wonder what if one of the other top 5 cars that day (Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, or Robby Gordon) had been in the lead when that last caution flew
Had an RCR car ended up winning…… is that viewed any differently by the fans in the stands?
This is one of the many reasons that I have come to DISPISE Nascar and everything about it.
Did you use The Cubs baseball team for A BUBBLE GUM (there my home team)
I was at this race! 13-14 year old me wishing I had a beer can or bucket to launch from the upper deck. At least it wasn’t jimmy. That was a cool Pepsi car too.
I remember watching this live
Gordon still would have won if it stayed green. He had all the momentum at the end
Wrong Dale would have
@@nascarandrc8296 yeah because he has sooo many more wins and championships than Gordon🙄🙄🙄

I miss the days when the race only ran for the scheduled distance.
Gordon will always win
A great race with a lackluster finish. With how minor the wreck was, they should have done a one lap shootout.
Rusty always seems to get caught up in the big one at Talladega.
That was one rule change I wholeheartedly approved of, finishes under caution were like kissing your sister.
The order was correct. The decision to end under yellow will still be one of the stupidest in NASCAR history. 5 laps on a 2.66 mile track for a single car spin. NASCAR created that powder keg
I think a better title would be, "The race that led to the green-white-checker system."
It was because of this race they didn't finish under caution soon after, a format that I still loathe to this day because it's caused more problems than it's fixed.
They pelted him in 2007 too after passing Dale Earnhardt... on Dale Earnhardt's birthday.
