Attention❗ I am a vocal coach and in this video I will make a commentary on vocal technique. It means that I will have to stop the video on several occasions to be able to analyze and comment on it. If you want to see the video without interruptions, I leave you the link to the original video below!
Many of you asked me to listen to Dimash's Stranger, composed for him by Igor Krutoy based on the words of Sharon Vaughn. In the previous reactions I had followed a chronological order of Dimash Kudaibergen's performances, but this time I wanted to make an exception by making a small leap forward. In this video, therefore, you will find the analysis of his live performance in 2021. Here the song is introduced by a Kazakh folk instrument (called kobyz, as also reported in the description of the original video), a bold move that mixes folk sounds with other more international. A very interesting and above all successful experiment! The sound is hypnotic and Dimash as always shows us all his skill, making us hear extremely low notes among other things!

At the beginning he thanked for the applause received after the interpretation of the song Your Love, a song with the vocal spectrum from F2 to F6, not at all easy to sing. Even more impressive is the performance that followed! It is completely out of the ordinary how Dimash Qudaibergen manages to convey extremely different emotions by singing almost exactly the same lyrics but using different dynamics, a different key, a different timbre and different sound production techniques! It begins with the shyness and doubt of a stranger who enters a territory totally alien to him (when he plays in piano mode and with sounds surrounded by encouragement), he moves on to the desire to test his strength to achieve a new beginning in music. life. (then when he achieves that magnificent passage through the entire spectrum of his vocal range using very different singing techniques in each register) and finally reaches the power of the victorious hero who not only tried, not only fought but finally defeated him (when he shows us the power of his belt and that super long high note of 20 seconds)! I only marked 3 moments, but they were more because between the choruses there were 2 slightly different moments of narration, but both in their register under the bass-baritone and there was another chorus (in total there were 4 choruses and two parts a little more of the story , all in different dynamics, different tonalities and very different vocal techniques interpreted impeccably from a technical point of view, but also with strong emotional effects in the sense of an impressive and maximum effect on the public that practically listened to the almost entire song hypnotized) ! For me it was the perfect song of the moment and it was a sublime demonstration of how far Dimash Qudaibergen can progress even though he is already far above his contemporaries. In this song he covered from C2 to F6! The special instrument is called kobyz, it is made of a single piece of carved wood, lined with goatskin, with two strings of horse hair. It is a traditional tool for peoples of Turkish origin, such as the Kazakhs, and has been considered a magical tool used by shamans in healing rituals in particular! The song was composed by Igor Krutoy, a Russian musician of Ukrainian origin and Jewish nationality, the lyrics are by an American poet Sharon Mary Vaughn of the neo-Protestant religion, the idea of introducing the Kobyz instrument in the song belonged to Dimash, a Kazakh of the Muslim religion, the musical arrangement it belongs to a Greek Dimitris Kontopoulos of the Orthodox religion and a Kazakh Yerlan Bekchurin of the Muslim religion. At kobyz, a Kazakh Olzhas Kurmanbek of the Muslim religion sings! Here is proof that people of very different nationalities and religions can collaborate perfectly in the name of art for the benefit of all mankind! Obviously none of them is intolerant how we should all be !

The idea of adding kobyza to a new song came to Dimash after he first heard the melody of "Stranger". The singer decided that the folk instrument would fit perfectly into the song, giving it an exciting sound.
Dimash is always concerned about the popularization of traditional Kazakh music. That's why he really wanted kobyz to sound on such a big stage as Sochi New Wave Hall, and then continue to fascinate listeners on other big stages around the world.
“We invited our talented friend Olzhas Kurmanbek to perform the role of a bagpiper in 'Stranger' because he is considered the best bagpipe player who can fully convey the emotions and character of the composition. Thanks to him, the song received its unusual and unique sound.
I always dreamed that kobyz would sound in my foreign collaboration, ”said Dimash.
Igor Krutoy immediately liked the decision to add a folk instrument to the new composition. The master agreed that in this way "Stranger" will take on new colors and become even more interesting.
“I was inspired to write a new song by Dimash's talent, his great vocal abilities and his desire to work for a large international audience. Honestly, I don't see who else could perform this composition in this way, ”said Igor Yakovlevich.

Stranger is an epic song with touches of medieval, Gregorian and even a march together. I love Dimash’s different voice textures specially the Middle East vibes in those riffs and runs 🎤❤️🔝🎼👏👏
Igor Krutoy said “It was Dimash’s talent that inspired me to write this song, his immense vocal abilities and his desire to sing for a large international audience. Franky, I don’t see anyone else who could perform this piece in such a way”
The gentleman playing the Kobyz is master Olzhas Qurmanbeck, the best player in Kazakhstan 🎻🔝 The Kobyz is the first stringed instrument ever. Kobyz is an ancient tool of the Kazakh people. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites. Kobyzy is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices. According to the ancient beliefs of many people, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre.

This is precisely why Igor came out of semi-retirement. To compose unique pieces for this absolutely unique voice. Fun to see how, after listening to quite a bit of Dimash's work, we can still be surprised and shocked! He's clearly been working on his lower range, and while he's using a bit of fry to get to some notes, most are still clearly and resonately there. [ Igor has also been working with Diana Ankudinova and her unique voice. ]
The Kobyz is a very ancient instrument, one of a group of similar that evolved across the Middle Eastern / Asiatic region, and that were the forebears of all our modern stringed instruments. It has a very distinct and haunting sound that resonates deeply, this is why the music of the Kobyz was believed to have special powers to drive away bad spirits, and to heal the sick. For this reason it's original use was restricted to Shamans, { those who can commune with spirits and can act as conduits or mediators between the real and the spirit worlds } which role included Medicine Men, at a time when most illnesses were believed to be caused by unquiet or actively malevolent spirits. The original instrument was typically made of a single piece of Beech, Walnut, Willow or Apricot wood, with 2 strings of horsehair. The hollowed sounding chamber was typically lined with goatskin.
The original composition by Igor did not feature the Kobyz, but was a later inclusion by Dimash. I think you'll agree it's distinct sound really fleshes out this unique piece. As you say; another great collaboration between these two 'Maestro's'. 😃
The Lyrics are from a poem by USA Poet and songwriter; Sharon Vaughan, and I believe are meant to draw attention to the plight of the ever growing numbers of Displaced People around the world, who have been forced from their homes and lands by various crises and need to start fresh in strange lands. [* IF they can get there - find a country that will offer them re-settlement - and aren't trapped for years in Refugee Camps ]
Here Dimash uses his 'many voices' to speak for the dispossessed; young, old, male, female, and children, and introduces also differing cultural flavours.
This is very congruent with his commitment to using his artistic 'platform' to address international humanitarian issues, as we observe ever more starkly in his recent release of "One Sky".

22:30 You are right. If a singer wants to hold out a note, usually the band will stop, or just hold out a low note, so that the singer can stop when he runs out of breath. For this song, there is an *entire musical phrase* being played underneath. Dimash cannot stop until that phrase is finished. So we know that the song was written to deliberately contain that long note. Very difficult for Dimash, but of course he sang it perfectly.

That is the premiere of this song: Maestro Igor Krutoy and Dimash Qudaibergen have created the really unique song in English with enchanting oriental melodies. “It was Dimash’s talent that inspired me to write this song, his immense vocal abilities and his desire to sing for a large international audience... I don’t see anyone else who could perform this piece in such a way”. - Krutoy said. (dimashnews)
A Dear hits the nail on the head with this statement: “These are the voices of the world singing the tragedy of human migration forced by tragic circumstances.”
Igor Krutoy (Krutoy means 'Cool', *1954 in Ukraine SSR). He lives and works in Moscow/ Russia. He is singer, a world- famous composer and music titan in Russia (billionaire). His family is in the US now. Krutoy came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship.
Dimash said also in an interview about the collaboration with Igor Krutoy that it is important to him that the songs are written in such a way that there is room for variations ... so every performance of a song is a surprise and every Dear can choose his favorite presentation... I can not decide.
The lyrics were written by Mary Sharon Vaughn (*1947, American musician, songwriter and producer. She writes hits for famous singers around the world, including Lara Fabian)

Hi Jack, just to correct you, Igor Krutoy is NOT Dimash's Official composer. Dimash corporates with him occasionally and they produce one or two songs a year. At least they used to but since the war started and Igor no longer produces the New Wave Festival there has only been one song slated for release in January this year that was delayed until Dimash's birthday May 24th 2022. Dimash composes many of his own songs include the incredible Story of Ine Sky his latest masterpiece and he also collaborates with other musicians. I expect they will get back to working together at some point soon. This song was changed significantly by Dimash adding the Kobyz, a traditional Kazakh folk instrument and he dropped the second verse to add his amazing vocals. So it's a two way street, Dimash collaborates he doesn't just sing what he is given. He is also the music producer of all his songs 🎵 ❤️

In my opinion, Dimash is primarily inspired and driven by his love for Kazakhstan, and he makes no bones about that and leans on its traditions and instruments in his creations. The history of the country has wide and deep roots in Central Asia, from China, Mongolia to the Stan countries and beyond, part of the USSR until the late 1980s. They were a culture of wanderers and nomads, fierce warriors etc. Dimash embodies this rich past perfectly. When he sings in his own language about themes close to his heart, he is the most passionate and lyrical. He is also a great actor, which helps. Stranger and the Story of one Sky brings out these qualities. So I think there is more of Dimash than Igor in them. Stranger also came out after the migrant crisis in Europe, and to me this is a song depicting the challenge for migrants, while echoing his own people's ancient quest.

I returned to your analysis not realising I had already been here and commented a couple of months ago....(that's how much I enjoy your reactions😊). I wanted to say/add that according to Dimash in one of the interviews I heard recently, the idea (and possibly the lyrics ) for Stranger came to him when he was first in China participating in the Singer competition, where he was a wild-card participant, the youngest!, didn't speak the language and felt quite homesick since he'd never been away from home for an extended period. I think he also met with Igor later in 2017. Further to my earlier comment, my instinctual reading of the song was related to the European migrant crisis in 2016. That and the Kazakh Wanderer theme resonated strongest with me. The theme is also played out at some level in The Story of One Sky. Thank you for your excellent reactions (making me feel I understand most of your Italian 😁). Dimash is truly a consummate musical artist.

Here is playing the best Kobys player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck.
This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys, Qobyz or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the mother (prototype) of all European string instruments.
(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages. Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ruclips.net/video/PqxhtBecVeg/видео.html )
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

@@magofkemh Come ho detto, questa canzone lascia molto spazio all'interpretazione.

A noi chi ci pensa ?

I think many of us will now want to hear and see your reaction to the other performance from the same event (The New Wave festival in Sochi 2021), also a collaboration with Igor Krutoy: "Ave Maria", a new composition which is in essence a take on the initial phrase from Schubert's classic turned into an etude.

Come mai?
