Arcane (netflix) - probably the most unexpected great show of the year, my personal #1 for 2021. After that, Bosch (amazon). Havent watched Mare or Chessnut, but the others are in my top 10 as well… out of 35 shows and counting (from 2021)

Awesome. 100% agreed on ‘Midnight Mass’. Gonna use that “M” word, Masterpiece. It’s simply amazing. The scene where the two more-or-less leads talk about what will happen/they’d like to happen when they die is astonishing. That scene in the trailer when the girl speaks to the man who had injured her - perfection. The plot twist - as you said, couldn’t turn away. Emotional, rich-Great story and storytelling.

    4 - Arcane Season 1
    3 - Midnight Mass
2 - Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1
    1 - Succession Season 3

Arcane, without a doubt, in all aspects, was the best series of 2021. I loved Midnight Mass, but it wasn't anything next to Arcane. Why? Because it is the new high-water mark in animation? No. Because it is one of the most emotionally-engaging stories in the last 20 years? No. Because of the perfect casting? No. It's because of all of those things coming together to make something greater than the sum of its already stellar parts. See it. Review it. It's worth it.

Check out 1883, only three episodes out so far but Isabel May is a stand out, and filmed in Texas!
So far I also like Firebite on AMC, Australian made, a little Mad Max with vampires, the creator took the issue of the intentional spread of smallpox to wipe out the native Australian peoples and flipped it to be the intentional introduction of vampires instead. The location used for filming is amazingly desolate and real! It is only 3 episodes in as well, but if you have a hard time with the dialogue use captions.
I so agree with your choices! I would only add one other to the list, the Italian series Romulus, I have watched the whole thing twice.
    Thanks for a perfect list!

My Favorite Series of all time, at least for me, is "The Expanse". In my humble opinion, The most scientifically accurate Science Fiction Series Ever. As you probably are probably already aware, this Amazon Prime Series (The First two seasons were on SyFy, before being picked up by Amazon Prime), is an adaptation of the Popular Book Series, where the Writers of the Books are also the Writers of the Show. The Characters are all deeply flawed individuals, coping with the many, many mistakes they have made in the past. What makes this series interesting is the stories of these individual characters, and how their lives and the choices they have made, affect the outcome of the Story. This Science Fiction Series has everything for me, Excellent and believable character development, Science based on proven fact, not theory, Ever present Political Tension, an "Alien Enemy" that is Scientifically believable and so much more. As someone that works in the high tech world of undersea Nuclear Propulsion, This series has everything for me. If you enjoy a cast full of flawed individuals, that pull on your heartstrings, and enjoy strong female characters then this is a must watch series for you. Please watch this Series, I Really want to hear your review and feedback of "The Expanse".

I'm wondering if you have actually watched it. I'm guessing no. If you haven't then it's an absolute must watch. The show is not what it appears from the outside, or when you start watching it. It's not until at least episode 3 where you actually get an idea where it's going.
There is a reason it has a 100% rotten tomatoes score. It took them 6 years to make the show. I'm not even kidding.

@@taydestiny38 Tell her that. It's the best show of 2021. She may never see it because of the fact it is animated and she might think that isn't her cup of tea. It looks like you pretty much fell under that same misconception. You actually watched it though and found out that it is the best show in years. In fact it has been rated the #1 show of 2021 by a lot of people and a lot of top 10 lists.
She really is missing out by having not watched it. You've seen it. You understand what I am talking about. Basically everyone that has watched it was blown away by it. I don't know how to articulate it to convince her to watch it. Maybe you can do a better job than I can. Hey Marianna, only just came across your channel, but became an immediate Subscriber, love your approach to critiquing and your taste in movies/TV.
Also, thank you for all the recommendations you’ve introduced me to, really appreciate it.
As one good turn deserves another, and seeing as how you like The Witcher and Shadow and Bone so much, can I strongly recommend the Apple+TV show called See. I was REALLY impressed by how well they executed the central conceit (essentially everyone in the cast is living in a dystopian future, but they’re all blind) and how it told a very engaging story that constantly subverted my expectations when I thought they were about to go down the typical tropes of story and character behaviours.
It’s beautifully shot and the world building is really solid. Also, can’t say enough about superb casting choices, they bring total believe-ability to their roles and I’m going to call this now, but Sylvia Hoeks is absolutely sublime as the manipulative evil queen…it’s a long time since I’ve witnessed a performance this deep…watch this space, we’ll be seeing a lot more of this lady.

Had watched the other 3 and loved them, but took your recommendations and watched Midnight Mass as well as The Chestnut Man. Loved them both, definitely liked Midnight Mass the most. Question- I realize that Chesnut man is based on the novel, which I assume does have a definitive end, but it seemed like the TV series hinted at a follow up with the ending; unresolved relationship perhaps happening in addition to the sketchy dude being released from prison. Did you have this impression as well? In regards to Midnight Mass, simply everything about it was done in superb fashion. I'm not religious at all, but I did find the many hymns in the show incredibly moving. And the "eyesight" of certain characters was so haunting, yet beautiful. Just a wonderful show.

I liked "Squid Game"! It was definitely very addicting. However, I don't think it impressed me as much as most people because I've seen the themes this series tackles in quite a few other Korean movies. But it was still solid, gave it 8/10.

I don't watch a lot of series but I saw and loved Mare of Easttown and Shadow and Bone! What I especially loved in Shadow&Bone was how it doesn't explain much at the beginning but lets you understand things as the story develops. And with Mare of Easttown I went to bed at like 4 am because after the second episode I couldn't stop watching! XD

Your picks that I've seen are right on: The Witcher, The Mare of E was absolutely fabulous. I felt that Midnight Mass was very good, and well balanced. Looking forward to Chesnut Man + Shadow, thank you! I had put off The Witcher because it's not our bag, however we've been binging Season 1, and now 2 with my wife, who doesn't go near these shows and we are loving it. I recently discovered episode 1 of Mr. Corman, written, directed and starring Joseph Gordon- Levitt. I'm thinking it's going to be very good. It is on Apple Tv+. Just discovered your channel, great work!

I've been stuck on a retro loop this year, I've missed so many series, I have a lot of pilot to watch. I still saw some 2021 series and the one I loved most was Resident alien, a big surprise, and funny show but not only. I higly recommend it. And season 2 start very soon.
About retro series, I've discovered Northern exposure this year, this serie is unknow here in France, and I guess in all Europe but maybe not. A classic and America and I understand why. Despite the cliche "will they won't they" old fashion style, the show has so much things, it's really interesting to follow the little community, the Alaska culture with local traditions.
Also Scrubs in a different style, so much fun but also so deep and sad sometimes, I love that.
2022 will bring many new series, hopefully many gems to watch. Better call Saul S6 and The flight attendant S2 are the returns I wait the more to watch.

Yellowjackets (Season 1) - easily the biggest surprise series of the year for me. great ensemble cast but Christina Ricci is the standout. Karyn Kusama directed the first episode of the series.
    For All Mankind (Season 2)
    Blindspotting (Season 1)
    The Underground Railroad (limited series)
    Hacks (Season 1)
    Reservation Dogs (Season 1)
    Heels (Season 1)
    Girls5Eva (Season 1)

I fully agree about The Witcher. The series is a poor adaptation of the books, but - despite some major flaws - good standalone product. Considering that I'm a hardcore fan of the books, I'm really susprised how much I enjoyed the show. Yet I have to say, that I'm in minority among Polish viewers. Season 2 is heavily criticized in Poland for being unfaithful to the source material.
My no. 1 show of the year is clearly Arcane, but I'm not going to brag about it, cause I know it's already on your watchlist.

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend  2 года назад +1

I totally get that, comparing it to the books is impossible. This is kind of why I think stepping further away from the books makes it better - if it's so different that you can't compare the two, it's easier to enjoy as it's own take on the character. Well, at least for me. I'm a big fan of the books as well ))

Mine is a mix of old and new
Damages - An older show that aired in FX and Audience. It took me a bit but this show is so damn good. Great writing, characters and edge on your seat suspense
Girl From Nowhere Season 2 - A pretty good follow up to Season 1 of this twisted and deliciously fun Thai anthology series
Blood & Water Season 2 - Good and enjoyable follow up to Season 1 and furthering the main mystery of Puleng's sister
Locked Up: Watched S1 last year and enjoyed it and I watched the rest of the show this year and it's a fun ride set in a women's prison in Spain
Being Mary Jane - A pretty solid show about a flawed news anchor, her love life and family
Honorable Mentions: Greenleaf, The Americans and Hard Rock Medical
