Not always. Lancelot has a Noble Phantasm named "Knight of Honor" which is simply him being able to use anything he can even vaguely conceive of as a weapon as his Noble Phantasm. Mordred has the Noble Phantasm "Secret of Pedigree" which takes the form of her helmet and conceals her identity, even from a Ruler like Jeanne, whom could normally identify a Servant with ease through the use of True Name Discernment.

I spoke to a blacksmith about coal vs propane once. He told me the same thing, but with far less chemistry involved. That coal is simply better with forge welding and that the amount of flux that a smith would have to use in a propane forge would require a massive amount of maintenance and cleaning. Especially on a show like forged in fire.

Would you guys be able to go a little more in depth about what quenching in different liquids does? Similar to the way Ilya explained the differences in the forges?
I too would've liked an explanation for the brine quench. It's my understanding that quenching in oil is less risky than quenching into water, but water hardens better by cooling more rapidly. Deciding which to use is probably about knowing your metal. If the steel is not likely to crack in water then it's okay to quench in water, but if it's liable to crack by becoming too brittle then you need to use oil. I have no idea why brine might be used.
I'm unsure if this is why they use brine, but the addition of different salts to water can increase its temperature range at which it stays at water. I.e. in my chemistry labs we add table salt to ice solutions when we want to keep water below 0°C without it freezing. It can also be used to raise the temperature water can reach before boiling, so maybe it has something to do with that? Like oil can't be used after a certain temperature because it light on fire but salt water would still be good?
Blacksmith here. So there are multiple forms of quenching such as brine, water, oil, and air. Brine allows the quickest quench but makes the part brittle. Water is the next quickest quench, oil is next after that followed by air quench which is the slowest and makes steel less brittle. Each quench is used for different applications such as the common oil quench which is a good balance between keeping a harder shell and a soft interior. That is a very condensed explanation and highly recommended looking into it further. It really is a fascinating subject.
Riverman ok then since we’ve got a blacksmith show up, am I the only one who saw them weld all those secondary blades right below the already heat treated and tempered tip?! Adding a heat effected zone right at the narrowest point of the spear tip attachment.
Yeah, I meant to add that to my reply as well. I'm sure it's either another chemical reaction or something about the salinity of the water affects the heat treat. Not sure. Care to wade in guys?
Not really, but you still need to set it up for some shock absorption so it basically has to be treated the same way. There's a crap load of force on a thrust from one of those. If it won't flex a little you'll have spear shrapnel all over the place.
For the most part, it's not required. But in a few applications, it's recommended that you have at least a basic understanding of thermal chemical reactions. That helps quite a bit, especially when dealing with traditional materials (bloom steel, crucible steel, meteorite, etc.) and non iron-based material.
Oh man, that was amazing to watch. I've always loved Jeanne d'Arc's character in Fate, but to see the actual flag in real life almost brings me to tears. I imagine Bakuya would just be too hard to make. Kanshou is probably doable, but a black blade covered in intersecting red polygons? How would one realistically go about making that?

a lurker hiding in the shadows Yes I think those would look amazing if the Man at Arms guys took a crack at them.
Phillip Vang they said they would not
Wow. I wasn't expecting a chemistry lesson but I appreciate it
Making this comment before watching:
But will they add the Flag to the Lance as well? Her noble phantasm is nothing without the flag.
Making after watching the video:
THEY DID MAKE THE FLAG!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WEAPON IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
Cú Chulainn's Gae Bolg would be nice.
(EDIT) Perhaps even Scathach's version of the weapon.
Yes both would be nice of either one is fine.
That would be awesome to see!
I would really like to see Ea or maybe Jack the Ripper's knives.

It wasn't even corrupted
Gerard Mourits better safe than sorry
Love Fate:Apocrypha, So glad they're giving ruler some love!
I like how Ilya teaches things throughout the process, I really love all his work
Why don't you just make what you think it's a super efficient modern sword? like if gunpowder was never discovered, what evolution of swordmaking could have developed? maybe a challege!
Not a bad idea, I wonder what they would come up with.
Alebomba88 plasma I think? Based cutting tools are avalible to surgeons. They're insanely good at cutting through tissue but they're very, very heavily regulated by the government.
amazing idea i think
Vinicius Eduardo There's plasma blades avalible to surgeons but that needs some really crazy restricted technology lol.
Hot damn make Altera's sword of Mars!
god damn how i'll love to see altera's lolipop blade. good civilization.
i can make that with jello pops.
c´mon broh the Magician´s rod of the dark magician
Wow! I didn’t expect to see you there.
Photon Ray is a good civilization
love the chemistry lesson
Huge respect for the channel for making weapons out of my fav game and anime
Make Gilgamesh's Ea that can spin
Where was that ever mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh?
Brynden Rivers its in the anime and looks epic do you need more Background? ^^
hahaha not gonna happen xD
It's barely even a sword as much as a cone on a stick
Ea is not a sword as it was created before the concept of any weapon.
Ludwigs holy blade from bloodborne
yes and don't forget the kirkhammer too
thelowengames i would love to see the burial bkade but its a nearly impossible build because of the mechanism
Lëgïenđąřý Groudon yes that would be a cool build
Mordred's Clarent? To go with Excalibur (also Fate Apocrypha)
Seriously like this one man. Ilya going into mad detail about how and why he's doing what he's doing.
Make the Le spatula from Spongebob
You guys should build ruroni kenshins reverse blade sword
the next time you quench something in brine, could you please explain what it does to the metal, compared to water / oil?
keep it up guys,
cheers from germany :)
I too would like to know what a brine quench does differently to a water/oil quench
I too would love to indulge in this knowledge!
Awesome job! Thank you so much. Enjoyed the more in depth video and the in depth descriptions of the three physics and the processes. Keep up all of the amazing builds!
Sacred sword the meliodas
omg yes they should totally make lostvayne or any sacred treasure for that matter.
blake belladonna so Dianne's too?
+Nikola Dedić sure why not . just not too the same scale tho
I just got done watching that anime ... hell yeah
You want a challenging spear? Try making Lu Bu's monstrosity from Fate/Extra.
Shinsui's Katen Kyōkotsu from bleach
Guts' sword from Beserk
Kingly456 you realize they already did that right
DO NOT PURSUE LU BU
Yes please, Lu Bu Halberd
Johnathan Joestar’s sword, "Luck and Pluck"!
D Sandman nice! gotta respect the og Jojo!
That lance is beautiful (is it called lance though lol). I really want to have one like that, not just as an accessory but a working sharp weapon. That lance looks great for that! Great work everyone!
You should do Meliodas's sword from the Seven Deadly Sins
Meliodas's "sword".
Unless it's his actual sword in which it's actually more like a dagger with holes in it
Katō Danzō yea
the sword's name is lostvayne
Iris from Witcher 3!
Amen
You guys are awesome .Nice work guys .Can you make Zoro's sword (Shusui) from One Piece . It would be little difficult since it has a red hamon line .I or rather all the One Piece fans would like to see you make it a grand success .Thank you for your hard work.
Marvel Melwyn

"I´M NOT MAKING THAT" JUST GREAT ILLYA!!!
I like how they actually made the flag as well:)
Crissaegrim - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
it's a loooong boi
The build itself in this video was pretty damn good but the music used in this video was legendary!
Keep it up, much love from Sweden
Please make The Twin Blade of Azzinoth, Illidan's Warglaives. :)
Probably the best show on RUclips with so much effort put into each video, amazing to watch each time.
Coiled Sword from Dark Souls? Coil can provide a good challenge.
How about Crocea Mors, from RWBY? You know, Jaune's weapon? Probably not as vicious to make as some of the others.
hoped to see gae bolg :( this works too
