  • Handmade ceramics have been a beautiful part of Ukrainian culture since time immemorial. Ceramicists ("honchari") created not only utilitarian objects, but also whimsical instruments and toys for children. The knowledge of these ceramic toys and instruments was almost lost in the 20th century as with many other aspects of folk life. Fedir Kurkchi's work in studying, collecting, and creating these toys was instrumental in keeping them alive. Today he and his wife Aleksandra Kulinenko run the ceramic KurKul Studio and Atelier out of their home near Granby, QC. In this video they share the enchanting world of Ukrainian ceramics with us and Fedir teaches how to make a clay whistle. In Ukrainian with English subtitles. Video by Olya Glotka. Poster art by Snow Conrad. More festival videos can be found using #OCUF2021
