I swear I grew up Knowing Vader was Luke's father, like it was just in my head by default
Yeah I'm pretty sure I was born with this info already printed in my brain
It's strange that I knew Leia's father is Vader before I learned that he's also Luke's. Must be because I read the Zahn novels before even knowing who George Lucas is.
Even when I was 4 I knew I didn't watch any movies but I was familiar with the characters I only watched clone wars by the way at that age
Darth Vader means dark father in German

Obi wan cuts the arm of an alien that was bullying Luke. There was blood.
alien flesh dont melt. loljk idk
Bruce Ree He had it on the lowest heat setting.
If you let hot laser or plasma cut a body part, there usually is not blood.
Bruce Ree he was an arachnid like creature so he didn't have small veins meaning they didn't cauterize quick enough
I never get over Darth Vader's reaction to Luke jumping off the pole he over there like : welp, he's gone
Vader: "Hell, I can't even be mad. That's the kind of stupid thing I would do."
Apple don't fall far from the tree.
".....That's my boy"
vader tried to talk to luke through the force when he was rescued by the falcon, so he knew luke was still alive
when the falcon flew away though, he looked really devastated, he didnt even want to choke the imperial officers
so I assume he was sad like when he lost padme
It's shock, he's probably thinking about how awful he must be for his own son to risk death rather than join him
you are doing good work mike by introducing people to star wars...

Just don't show them the prequels.

The secret Mark Hamill had to keep from Carrie Fisher at ALL COSTS.
Mark Hammill once said in an interview (indirectly in regards to this scene) that he and Harrison (Ford) used to have a game where, if they wanted everyone to know a secret, they would "tell it to Carrie 'in confidence.'"
"Telephone, Telegraph, TeleCarrie"
Did Hamill even know? I thought James Earl Jones was the only one who knew aside from Lucas himself?

“Why is he the father?”
Well.... is a long long story, a tragic story
ateaxxion it’s a simple story really....
Evil emperor uses the Force to impregnate girl, who gives birth to ultra-Force-sensitive boy. Boy grows up thinking he’s hot shit (and an orphan), then watches his mom die soon after finding out she was actually alive! #traumatic
Boy grows up under the training of the Jedi, but then OOPS gets corrupted by his evil sort-of father, breaks the heart of his true love, slaughters some children, and then almost melts to death in lava after getting his arm sabered off.
He went through a lot, okay?
They should have first shown the girls the scene in the classic where Obi-Wan is educating Luke on the Jedi and how Darth Vader was his pupil who was seduced by the Dark Side. Then the classic lightsaber duel in the sequel.
There's only one tragic story in the entire SW Universe, and it's about Darth Plagueis the Wise one
A long time ago , in a Galaxy far far away ...
"So there was once a blockade on the planet Naboo...."
In this modern day and age, how do you go so long without finding out about that twist? I knew about that BEFORE I even watched Star Wars for the first time when I was 7 years old!
Jirwemthegreat just some people don't watch or listen to this ish
I got introduced to Star Wars through Angry birds Star Wars (yeah that's depressing)
And RUclips thumbnails and titles always spoil something that is meant to be hidden until finally seeing it
Ivan Gabrieluooo j Barrozo Same story bro. I was introduced to Star Wars because of Angry Birds and one day Star Wars was airing on TV and I didn't want to watch it because it was Star Wars episode 4 so I was thinking I shouldn't skip 3 movies and I need to watch them before A New hope but I watched it anyways. And now I'm a Star Wars Fan. And I can't believe how lucky I was to watch films in this order.
1. A New Hope
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. The Return of Jedi.
I watched episode 1 to find who Darth Maul was and watched episode 2 to complete the Prequel trilogy.
It's been quoted millions of times, not knowing that Vader is Luke's father is like not knowing what Facebook is.
True. It’s like the Alfa and Omega of plot twists, the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the concept of plot twists
When I was a kid my mom's second boyfriend said "Zef, I AM your step-father".

@@hungaryandblackwidow3863 honey, I'm from outside USA and i was 10 when I saw Ep4.
Just pick any random person born after 2000, they will most likely never have watched the original trilogy. And in the prequels it is just a small moment where it's revealed that Luke is Vaders father that can be easily missed. And I'm not sure if it is ever mentioned in the new trilogy.
When I watched the Force Awakens with a group of people more than half had never seen Star Wars before.
MY dad who is almost 60 only ever saw the first movie and didn't know vader was lukes dad, I think its more common then you think.
Welcome to the Nerd side young Padawans. Fulfill your destiny.
Hola.
honestly the scene still shocks me even now and gives me goosebumps, what made this scene even more impactful was only a few people knew, Mark Hamill, George Lucas and the director knew about it and funny story at the premier when the scene came up Harrison Ford whispered to Mark "Hey kid, you didn't fucking tell me" XD
Fun fact: during the making of this movie, only 4 knew that Darth Vader was Luke's father. Those were George Lucas himself, his movie director at the time, James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader), and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) for a proper reaction.
Everyone else on set didn't know about this. Everyone had a script that said, "Obi-Wan killed your father." And there were 2 people playing Darth Vader, a man in costume and James Earl Jones voicing him. The one in costume played the script "Obi-Wan killed your father," on set, while James Earl Jones said "I am your father," somewhere where no one was looking.
In an interview with Mark Hamill, Mark was warned that if this leaked out, they would know that it was him.
Could you image everyone on set. The camera men, the effects people, the other actors. They've seen the making of it from beginning to end and then they finally go see the movie in theaters for the first time. They know what's coming, the snow monster captures Luke, the Empire arrives on Hoth for a battle, the Falcon being chased by the Empire, Han frozen in carbonite, Luke getting his hand cut off. Then, BANG!!! The voice of Vader goes off script with James Earl Jones saying, "I am your father." Was Earl Jones having fun recording and they put a blooper reel in by mistake or was this Lucas's plan all along?
David Prowse also knew, apparently. He was the actor in the Vader costume. He must have let it slip because there was alot of friction between him and Lucas over it. I don't know why because there were Star Wars comic books in '78-'79 that depicted that scene. So I and quite a few others in my circle knew it, so I had assumed it was common knowlege among people who cared slightly.
I don't know how they kept baby Yoda such a secret til the reveal of him at the end of the first episode of Mandalorian. They did a good job, because nowadays you have paparazzi with telescopic lense cameras and social media. Literally no one outside the cast and crew knew about the baby until the episode aired. Then the internet basically exploded.

Ghostshooter I'm not here to judge, I'm here to fix :)
MikeBowShow well said👐
+Ghostshooter Incorrect. They are Asian, and thus have watched asian films, like south korean thrillers that have infinitely better movies twists than "luke, i am your father.' Like the movie, Oldboy: "I am your daughter". He fucked his own daughter. That's asian for you. Much better than american cinema.
The twist in Oldboy was so good. Unlike Star Wars which tells you the twist in words in Oldboy you figure it out for yourself. The part were he starts looking through the photobook is when I came into my head that he fucked his daughter. It was the first time a movie has ever surprised me so much because most movies are predictable.
MrShaiya96 im asian and all my friends knows it to ( im from indonesia)
Not one moment in this new trilogy can compare to this
capoditutticapos19 at least the prequels had the high ground!
Oh they can compare, all right.
But not exactly in a flattering light. I'm not so sure it's fair, however, as we're discussing one of the highest points of the films (all of them) in what's probably the best movie to ones which are troubled . . . at best. The prequel trilogy likewise lacked a moment which could stack up against this, and for years I got to hear that comparison instead.
There is one moment, however, which does stand out as something the sequel trilogy did well: The first reveal of the Resistance X-Wings and the following long shot of Poe taking out nine TIEs in roughly 30 seconds. I'm hard-pressed to hate that, as the maneuvers even look plausible. If anything I hate the opening space scene from TLJ more. (I can understand having mothballed the Y-Wings, those things were old at Yavin. But the B-Wings as well?)
What about the Holdo maneuver? It's not like a droid could have done that...
Oh, wait...
@@Klffsj Sure, if you're willing to waste a capital ship which can't be easily replaced... along with whatever was still on it. Neither the Rebellion or the Resistance can truly take such losses lightly.
And it's not like they haven't done similar in the past. Rebel forces have made suicide missions/maneuvers just to take the enemy with them, but the cost has not ever been treated as something they can simply shake off.
That's Imperial thinking.
@@kereminde Hence, my sarcasm. As beautiful as it was in the moment... it was pretty dumb.
it's not possible to not know who Vader is-- it's such an overused saying "Luke I am your father".
yea even though he says no, i am your father
I've heard people on the internet, media, and real life joke about the quote "Resistance is Futile" over and over again throughout my life. But because I haven't watch any of Star Trek until recently, I had no idea what context that was in or who said that. Hell, I didn't even know it came from Star Trek.
Just because they may know of Darth Vader as some iconic big baddie and may have heard "I am your father" once or twice (or perhaps not) doesn't mean its easy to connect the dots if you've never watched Star Wars.
Zuriel 883 May I add that sometimes your mind goes blank when watching a movie because you're focusing on what is happening in front of you.
Zuriel 883
"Resistance is Futile" is a little more ambiguous than "I am your Father".
@@victorconway444 To be fair, Star Trek has never achieved such a massive exposure as Star Wars has, so it would make sense that catch phrases related to Star Trek would be relatively unknown to most. Reason to this is rather simple: Star Trek was primarly focused on american television networks while Star Wars aims always was a world wide audience.
I love seeing people still enjoying these movies even years after they've been around. The reactions to new fans are always fun to watch as they're discovering these films for the first time...
This here is the sole reason you need to show people that are new to Star Wars episodes 4, 5, and 6 first. Not because of that "true fans watch it in this order" bullshit. If newbies (or padawans if you prefer) watch it in order by episode, then this reveal will not have the impact it did on the rest of us.
knytrydr73 But it's also really cool to see Darth Vader's story in the original trilogy with full knowledge of his tragic backstory. I would always tell someone to watch the prequels first just for that reason. Basically everyone already knows Darth Vader is Luke's father anyway.
: actually this shows that is not true. Not everyone knows Vader is Luke's father. There are dozens of RUclips vids showing this. On one level I do agree with you. Knowing Vader's backstory changes the entire dynamic of the original trilogy. Nothing wrong with that, just a fact.
Show people new to Star Wars episodes 1-3 then 4-6. Then they can watch the new sequel trilogy.
The conundrum is that nobody can do it both ways. Can only be done one way or another.
No. Show 1 when they're kids, then go for 4-5, then, show 2-3 as a "flashback" and then go to 6. Sprinkle in Clone Wars as needed.
Good... Their training is complete...

This is the moment it happened. This is the lynch-pin that connected everything and made Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker the centerpieces of a sweeping epic.
Could've let it simmer. People thought he was lying back in the day.
People who thought Vader was lying back in the day didn't search their feelings.
One thing about this. Back when Empire was released, only the first people who saw the movie were unspoiled. Even without internet, everyone knew about this within a week or two, so most of the people who saw the movie in 1980 weren't taken by surprise.

@@undeadnightorc Is something going over my head or did you not know about Disney's Trilogy that they made, because they made another three movies, Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. Many people, including myself, believe that they're quite bad as well, and to me at least the Prequels had some funny moments, no matter if they were unintentional.
How could you not know? Its been around for so long and how many times have you heard “ Luke. I am your father.”
no*, I am your father
Why did this appear in my recommended?
I showed my cousin Star Wars for the first time around last year I believe, and it's been great since then. He says that he might have enjoyed the prequels more if I had showed them to him first because the father reveal is so ingrained in pop culture that it's not common for people not to have heard it before seeing it. But Anakin turning to the dark, if you didn't know it before, even with all the hints of him turning, it would have been pretty surprising. Also, it gives a different interpretation to Darth Vader, you don't see him as a villain but a fallen hero, just a shell of what he once was, redeemed in the end by the son who never gave up on him
