Is This The DUMBEST Car Problem Of All TIME? EV Issues Already

  • I bought my 2017 Chevy Volt Premier a week ago to save money on gas, but it already has a problem. Every time I stop or slow down the parking sensors turn on and the car starts beeping. It always thinks I'm about to hit something even though there is nothing close to the car. Today we're going to fix that, detail the car so it's ready for daily duty. Then finish a bunch of other projects in the shop.

To cover up those holes from the license plate, get some flat top Christmas tree pins, paint them with some touch up paint and then install them. Yes they'll appear bigger than the holes, but will be less obnoxious. Almost look like sensor array.

Spendy but a company called , for real, bumper plugs, sells just this. They are painted to match with correct auto paint and look about as good as you can with a hole in the bumper.

Exactly. That’s what I did on my Flex for less than a few bucks, at Lowes. My Flex is black, but if it bothered me that much I’d hit it with touchup paint for less than Bumper Plugs charges.

Just replace the Carmax plate and put on something else. My Jeep didn’t have a front bracket when I bought it Arizona (one plate state), had to get a bracket and front plate when I moved to Ohio ( 2 plate state). Ohio is now a one plate state. Too much trouble to remove the bracket and fill the holes.

At a minimum change the oil every two years, regardless of the miles on the ICE or the oil service % display. I change my oil once a year on my gen1 volt, regardless of the miles on the oil. Also gen2 Volts like yours are DI only with no port injection so you may need intake valve cleaning even with low ICE usage. Also the water cooled EGR is problematic. The biggest issue with the gen2 is the BMC going bad from some kind of defect. Good luck

My 2018 Chevy Volt Premier with ACC
, only has 9500 miles, bought new. I do love the car, but has issues. I've had the notorious shift to park problem fixed and had to fight with GM for reimbursement for the repair. Within 2 years, my brake booster failed and had to be replaced under warranty. One month after the 3 year warranty, the brake booster failed again. I had to fight with the dealer and GM to get help due to the warranty expiring the month before. After a couple months, they agreed to fix it again if I paid an additional 600. Had it repaired again and as I left the dealership, the break booster started making the same rapping noise. I immediately brought my Volt back to the dealer 10 minutes later. They called GM and told me this is a characteristic of the car and could not help me any more. I'll never be able to sell this car with this issue... With only 9500 miles.

I came upon your channel when researching the Volt. My father-in-law had one before he passed, and they've always intrigued me. I'm looking to buy a used/new car now and I'm looking at 2017-2019 Volts or a new Honda Civic. I know they are wildly different cars but I'm still having trouble deciding to go in on a used Volt. Here is the problem for me. From just a cost savings perspective I'm not seeing the math work out when it comes to the potential gas savings v. the potential cost of a new EV battery. The concern I keep coming back to is most used Volts have anywhere from 30k to 80k miles from what I've seen out there. If the battery warranty is up or close to up, then I'm on the hook for a new battery if it were to go out. Searching stories on those I see price tags near $30k. So, given that let's say I'm all in for $55k after a new battery. If I spent $200/month on fuel I'd break even in about 23 years. I have other reasons for liking the Volt but I just can't get my head around the potential cost of the battery replacement.
Have you thought about the battery replacement? I'm sure you have the skills to replace it yourself and maybe even rebuild a bad one with fresh cells but that's no easy task if you're not a mechanic with some decent EV skills. I appreciate your videos and I'll keep watching to see how your car does for you.

That's one method, or leaving the hub mounted and using a screw press clearly works well too. Even with a hydraulic press, you still need the appropriate sized sockets, or press plates, cups, etc to push on the inner races, outer races, and hub as necessary.
Walking out of Harbor Freight with a new press won't be all the tools you need, but their "Maddox FWD Bearing Kit" MC21-1, or this OEM TOOLS 27213 kit for ~3x the price will have everything but the wrenches to turn it.

@@emeraldtumi I consider my tire sensors very essential to knowing about if I have a pressure that is going to cause extra tire wear and avoid an expensive tire replacement, well worth the cost! Parking sensors? Only necessary if the L2 ADAS system you're using makes use of them. I've never used any manufacturer's self-parking thing, I just avoid that altogether.

With the atom being so light and hp not really being crazy, I don't think you need such a heavy clutch. Really think you could go with a better clutch to make the car more joyable driving.

i love my '14 Lexus GS350, but when the parking sensors are ON it has a green light ON THE DASH. it is so annoying. When the parking sensors are OFF, no light on dash. this is the opposite of what it should be...like JR said, parking sensors should normally always be on. What the hell was Lexus thinking when they designed this...

Thumbs up for the liner panels going up - the walls were really letting the shop down (IMO) - now if you acquire a WORKBENCH I'd be so so happy ;-) And again I'm not really a Chevy fan but that Volt is a great car for a short commute...

2018 Volt owner here. Get a new battery. The high voltage system doesn’t keep the battery magically topped off. Gotta replace them every two years or so. Symptoms start with weird electrical gremlins and end with the car not starting/charging. Worth a try. Cheers

So what do people who live in states/provinces that require a front plate do? That's a pretty major design flaw. Do other cars with front sensors have the same problem?

    • @KearSki
      @KearSki 2 года назад

A metal plate won't bend and flex like the plastic carmax tag was, so as long as the screws are properly tightened the front plate won't set off the parking sensors.

I agree about the gen 1 style, it reminded me of the old Subaru SVX, especially the rear. But if I were to buy one I'd go for 2nd gen, sadly, for the various improvements.
