  • This town was voted the most depressing in the UK in a 2024 survey, we decided to give it a visit to speak to the locals and see if it really is depressing.
    LADbible, for the people.

I live in Falmouth. Last week I watched 2 humpback whales breaching In the bay from Pendennis point in the winter sunshine, Consider me utterly depressed 😆

Damn LB, killing me 😅 that survey doing my university town dirty like that! I’m glad y’all had a decent time there at least. Definitely can confirm that without the arts jobs and major arts events, being an arts town means most students like myself end up moving away.

Very enjoyable video. I moved to Scarborough years ago and i can say that it's a nice place to visit. Living here is very different to holidaying here as it's delapidated. People are (mostly) brilliant

Coming from a town that basically nobody cares about and now living in Falmouth for university, it’s so surreal seeing people on the internet go to the same places and do the same things I’ve done every day here. Crazy

I went to Falmouth Uni, and loved the area so much that I stayed a fourth year for an MA, but couldn't get any job afterwards for love nor money so had to move away in 2018. Lovely place to retire to, terrible place to start a career. I'd love to afford to return though, I miss Falifornia 🥹

Omg, I've applied to study an undergraduate at falmouth uni for September this year and my interview's soon! Were the staff supportive and were the people nice there? How did you find accomadation? And which accomadation would you recommend staying at?

Also, is it true that's it's depressing in the winter and are there beaches within walking distance from the uni? Because I'd love to learn how to surf there. Sorry, if that seems like too many questions lol, I'm just curious what it's like 😭

@@peachyfurey sorry I only just saw these replies 😭 In first year I stayed on campus (the Tremough/Penryn) one, I think I was in Glasney Parc H3, I'd definitely recommend on-campus accommodation for first year as it's a lot more convenient for socialising and everything in your first year, being in private accom would feel really isolating by contrast. The staff were supportive, and everyone was really friendly and chill. The education wasn't really that great, I get that uni is supposed to be more self-directed but the undergrad course I did was so poorly structured and had so few classroom/contact hours that my main feeling at the end of the first three years was "well that was a nice albeit expensive three year holiday". If you try to make the absolute most of the resources and everything at your disposal though, it's a lovely place to go to uni, I didn't learn a great deal academically there but I undeniably grew as a person and will forever be grateful for the atmosphere it provided. It's not that bad in the winter tbh, it's kinda dead out of term-times but even during the summer you'll experience all four seasons in a day lol, the weather does whatever it likes, but I certainly look back fondly at my time at Falmouth Uni.

Born and raised in Falmouth, moved further up the county twelve years ago, went back to visit family and realised I’ll never go back. House prices are absolutely insane, way too many students, infrastructure is dire, a lot of the locals are hostile, and the town itself is dead on its ass. Shame it’s happened, but Falifornia is not what it was, the university has strangled it.
