I am the only one who can do this right now, until Nintendo implements it properly for everybody.
No hacks means no hacks, it works on any console that you're able to copy it to, and it will work /without modification/. The game has no way to set it yet, so I do it manually. I swear, sometimes you people will argue over anything.
Didn't get proper footage from last time, so here's a whole bunch of stuff. They seem to have not finished separating everything out yet, since it glitches with the eyes still. Everything else works great, though.
ah, i remember watching this as a child and starting to cry when i didn't turn into an octoling after putting on that outfit.

Looking back at Splatoon 1 is a crazy experience, it looks so primitive when compared to 2 & 3. I'm surprised I played this game so often with those controls 😂

i love the idea of octolings missing eyes. like they were gauged out for the goggles to be implanted within. of course, that's not the case (marina still... has eyes after wearing the goggles years before), but it's fun to think about
@AlfieCantleyI think the Octolings in the single player campaign had eyes if you managed to use hacks to remove the goggles, but the game would just load the Inkling eyes as a placeholder. There were ways to do that in multiplayer iirc (which would cause the game to crash on loading the plaza, man I remember the panic around that)

I think Nintendo Isn't adding the Octolings, but I recommend them to do this.
Suggestion:
For Nintendo Splatoon~ In Options you can change how your inkling looks, why not add a button that says "Octoling" and will take you to the options for the Octolings male and female. You can select one of them like a inkling and you get to play around with It. But you need to finish the Octoling Valley then you get the option to choose.
I hope this works out, also when Its for the female, do the same for the octoling, and If It was a male maybe do simular to the actual boy inkling but replace It with a octoling style.

It's actually impossible for a male octoling to exist in-game. According to the lore, only female octarians adapt a "human-like" form. :/

They must have planned to have playable octolings, I mean, everything is perfect including the octopus model for hiding in ink, the only thing that isn’t completely functioning is the eyes
Because it was basically planned its files were updated as updates were released but it’s unknown to why it didn’t get released for the first game
Also the Kraken ability curls when playing as an octoling which adds more to this theory

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that we get to play as octolings officially in splatoon 2 in an update later on. I love the new terminator 2 style sunglasses they wear in splatoon 2... since they all look the same, they basically are like terminators, so maybe that's why they have those sunglasses and the glowing red eyes

***** They're probably gonna introduce a new mode that includes the Octolings as AI bots.
The reason why I'm saying this is because TF2's robot versions of the all the characters (from the Mann Vs. Machine mode) are ONLY AI bots, but you can PLAY as them perfectly if you hack and swap the characters models (similar to how NWPlayer123 did it)
They make the hats fit the model. For example, because of how the Inkling Boy's hair works the squid girl hat was made much bigger to accommodate his tentacles, while the Female variant stayed true to the source material. The same can be done for the Octoling, and that could be one of the reasons it could be taking so long for an official playable Octoling.

I think we were going to have playable octolings in Splatoon 1 but they didn’t have an idea of how to tell people that a octoling would go to their enemies (inklings) since in the octo expansion we can see why our octoling goes to inkopolis,(because she helped a lot and saved them/saved inkopolis) but in Splatoon 1 I don’t think we would have something like the octo expansion, the reason I think this is because we can see the octolings eyes at the end of a match, in the story mode we can’t see their eyes because of the goggles, so why would they make something that wouldn’t be showed? Also as you can see their hair turns to the ink color they have, it’s this or it’s just the hack that makes the hair color, but the eyes still since they look similar as the ones we have today

for people still watching this in 2020 and want to know how to do this, this original server-side exploit has been patched. you can still hack the save file, load the game and you will appear as an octoling, but once you enter a match it will turn you automatically into an inkling girl. you can get client-side exploits where only you can see yourself as an octoling. if you really want to be an asshole and softlock someone, enable tcpgecko on your Wii u or dump your save file, then download splathex here: leanny.github.io/SplatHeX.zip load your save, go-to the player editor then change your character to octoling. save the file, reload it on to your Wii u if necessary, and that's it. i don't see why you would want to do this, because it doesn't work in-game. for a client-side exploit download splataio and tcpgecko on your Wii u. then run octohax. hopefully, this can clear up any misconception people are having.

If it's found in this games current files, chances are a playable octoling(?) will not be a DLC, but an update for the game. And if you're wondering why they haven't officially released said update, look at how most headgear clips through the Octoling tentacles. That's probably why, same with the eye glitches. Though even if this Octoling IS released as an update for the current game I do wonder whether or not it would be free. Cool stuff though!

cuberandgamer NWPlayer has been the only recorded person to do it so far, and he goes into his save file and changes the model number to 2 instead of 0 or 1. 0 = Female Inkling, 1= Male Inkling, 2=Female Octoling.
Before you do anything, if your save file is on a flash drive don't put it in your computer and format it. It will get rid of everything on that flash drive. I'd recommend using a 4GB to 8GB SD card to change the model in your save file.
