G37 Sedan - VR30 Trans Swap Follow-Up & Cost Breakdown - So You Want To VR30 Trans Swap Your G or Z?

- **Update, after about 15K miles on the VR30 Trans, the OEM flexplate broke, so I would suggest to upgrade this part as well while you're in there. I went with the JOL brand one, but Z1 Motorsports and Fast Intentions also makes one. Do your own research before choosing one, good luck**
Finally the full breakdown of what it took me $$$ to do this swap and some tools you may need:
1) Used VR30 Trans (Got mine on eBay):
Cost: $1000 shipped
Rolling Total: $1000
2) Got all of these 7 items at my local Infiniti Dealer:
2a) Trans oil pan gasket (Part #: 31397-1XJ0A: $27)
2b) Trans pan drain crush washer (Part #: 11026-JA00A: $1)
2c) Trans pan refill crush washer (I believe the drain bolt and washer is sold together as a combo - Part #: 31361-1XJ0A: $49)
2d) 4 trans inlet and outlet lines copper washers, 2 for each line (Part #: 21626-32U00: $5 x 4 = $20)
Rolling Total: $1,097
3) An aluminum one piece driveshaft for a G37 coupe automatic (Part #: INSH5-A: $733 Shipped). Got mine from the Driveshaft shop.
Rolling Total: $1,830
4) 9-10 quarts of ATF fluid, you can get the big 5 quart bottles but don't forget to get one 1 quart one for the fluid pump. I went with Valvoline Max Life Full Synthetic brand. (From Walmart: $18 x 2 Four Quart Bottles = $36).
Rolling Total: $1,866
5) Laser temperature gun, got mine at Harbor Freight ($20)
Rolling Total: $1,886
6) Gear lube pump with the Yamaha fitting adapter (Amazon: $5)
Rolling Total: $1,891
7) Transmission Jack, got mine at Harbor Freight ($200)
Final Total: $2,091

*Optional Parts:
1) Trans oil cooler, with braided steel lines (Any Brand As Long As It Has Braided Steel Lines: $240)
Rolling Total: $2,331
2) Two 10AN adapters to connect the cooler line to the trans line (Amazon, Cost: $15)
Original Final + Optional Total: $2,346
3) One stainless steel hose barb splitter (Amazon: $10):
Rolling Total: $2356

Tools and misc items you will most likely need:
-Jack stands that have good height extensions
-Assortment of open box end wrenches, 3/8th and 1/2” ratchets, sockets (17mm, 14mm, 12mm, and most likely 10mm, there's always a 10mm somewhere in any job on a Japanese car LOL), extensions (1/2” that adds up to at least 32” long), allen wrenches (if you can get a set great but if not you'll at least need a 10mm for the diff/driveshaft adapter plate) and you may also need a crows foot 17mm & 19mm for the same parts install.
-A drill with drill bits for metal/aluminum
-zip ties
-Blue Loctite

No not really. In the mornings when it's really cold it's not as smooth shifting but once it warms up it feels fine. My shifts are a bit firmer but that's because my tuner programmed them that way. What's yours doing?

Hello there, pricing varies from shop to shop so really hard to say, but I think I've heard shops charging up to $1K and up for this, individuals might change somewhere near $500-600, but again hard to say. Hope that helps. This is just an estimate for swapping the trans out, might be a little bit more for the other parts mentioned.

Hello, yes I still have the G and the transmission is holding up well. Just went through a full Arizona summer and it withstood the abuse no problem.

Just wondering because the transmission off of my 2012 G37x sedan is starting to go and I am really considering to swap out the VR. As far as the electricals go like the car reading it and all the is it plug and play I have a mechanic that’s willing to do but says if the electricals is a problem he cannot do anything about all hardware in and out he’s all for it.

You should also check out the part 1 & 2 trans swap video on my channel as well. It's a pretty straightforward swap, you do have to drill a new spot on the Bell housing for the vehicle speed sensor and you also have to swap the TCM from the G trans to the VR trans. Stuff any season mechanic should be able to do, good luck and let me know how it goes 😀.

What is your opinion on getting the valve body upgraded (like GTM does) and a torque converter upgrade too?
I've heard of companies that do that and although I'm not that familiar with them all, I'll say for an N/A setup it may be overkill.

Hello, you're talking about the TCM right? If yes, you want to use the one that has been programmed with the ECU
I'm also looking to do this myself and have basically everything besides the Trans and Trans cooler and i have a few questions.
1.) Was your G37 RWD or AWD?
~ Mine is a 370GT Sedan ( G37 ) and is RWD
2.) Did you have to make any adjustments to differential flange
3.) How is it holding up to this day?
Most guides that came before this video, Reddit/GodZillaRaceworks write up advise that a spacer is needed, This spacer sits between the rear driveshaft and transfer case output flange.
GodZilla Raceworks and SoHo Motorsports both sell this spacer.
However from what i gathered, because were using the One Piece driveshaft from from the coupe ( Driveshaft shop ) , that it fits perfectly without the needed hassle for space as the coupes driveshaft is shorter than the sedan.
Hello, to answer your question, 1) my G is a RWD, 2) no I didn't have to make any adjustments to the differential flange, 3) the VR30 trans is holding up just fine, but I would highly recommend you upgrade the flex plate, mine recently broke and I'm replacing it with an LOJ upgraded flex plate.
I've seen the spacer that sits between the rear driveshaft and transfer case output flange that SOHO sells, but if you buy the one piece aluminum driveshaft then you won't need this. Hope this helps and good luck.

Damn sorry to hear about the flex plate. Luckily, in my case, I have the fast intentions flex plate on standby.
I've heard as well about the one-piece driveshaft that it's starts shaking and vibration after 100 mph or in that speed range. Apparently, it may be a hit or miss for some folks 🤔

When you did the swap, did you use the shifter linkage from the VR over to the VQ or did you reutilize the VQ shifter linkage cable/rod.
same questions with the OEM transmission mount/brace, i know you used torque solutions, but you'd know if the VQ Trans mount will work fine, or does it have to come from the VR?
Only asking, as I'm trying to look for ebay listings to buy a transmission, however some listings don't include the shifter linkage.
Hey there. If you can find a VR30 trans that comes with the shifter rod, get it, if not you'll have to modify the one from the VQ no problem. The VQ transmission mount works fine, what you'll have to modify is the VQ trans cross brace that the trans mount sits on, reason being is because the VR30 trans is about a half an inch longer than the VQ trans. BTW in the middle of editing a new vid, I broke the OEM flex plate from the G and I just installed an LOJ one, so this is another recommendation I'm making for now on as well. Can you put this in a 08 g37 coupe my has a 5 speed transmission not 7 witless it be a direct swap?
The problem would be your current TCM, valve body and solenoids wouldn't work for the 7 AT. You would have to find someone who could program the TCM from the VR trans to work with your G, I don't think I've ever seen or heard of anyone doing this.

The 300hp version used in your video? Is it different from the 400hp version?
If I'm understanding your question correctly you're asking if there's a difference between the transmission in the red sport and the non red sport right? Not 100% sure but I don't believe there is a difference between the two, as long as the trans is coming off the 3.0t you should be fine.

Hello, it's ISR Long Tube Headers, ISR y-pipe and the SOHO 3" single exit exhaust system with no resonator. It's definitely loud at low and high RPM and a little bit raspy at around 3K RPM.

That's an interesting question and honestly I don't have an answer for you. I would say yes if you could find somebody to program a 7AT TCM to your ECU.

Can you Vr30 swap a g37 coupe ?
I don't think I've seen it before but I don't see why not. The VR30 trans is about a half inch longer than the OE trans, so that's why you have to get the shorter driveshaft from a G37 coupe. So that means that on a coupe the trans would sit a little back but that's okay cause when I installed my driveshaft it looked like it still had some room left to be pushed in a little bit more. Hope that makes sense.

I think it should but I can't say with 100% certainty because I don't think I've seen anyone with an Infiniti G37 coupe or a 370Z do it yet.

@@jhu9417 I'm not really sure, I've only done it in the G37 sedan so can't speak about the coupe. I would assume it would but you may have to drop the rear diff to get the shaft to go in and line up.

Yes sir, planning on boosting at some point, but even if I wasn't this is still a better replacement than the G37 OE trans.

@jhart0512 I'm in the same boat. If you have not already done so. Strut tower, and rear swaybar at least help with body flex greatly. Our verts are heavier than the sedan 😂

@@joshmesser1165 Honestly not 100% sure of the differences between trims. When I was looking for a VR30 trans I made sure that it came out of a Q50/60 that had the VR30ddtt, not the 3.7, hope that helps. Good luck with the swap.

@@joshmesser1165 doesn't have to be a red sport, as long as it's from a 2016 or newer vr30. Silver or red sport doesn't matter they have the same transmission

@lostjester you'll have to modify the one from your old transmission to make it work, go watch Alvin's video from the Infinitibrothers RUclips channel, pretty sure he explains how to do this.

I mean theoretically it should bolt up minus a few holes that may not line up, but kind.of hard to say if the TCM's are interchangeable, I'm sure someone's tried it though.
