I am glad I am not the only one with an old trusted tool sickness. They wouldn't even make these rebuild kits if it weren't for people like you and all of us with the same sickness...... awesome
These ratchets are actually available new in all sizes and lengths from Proto. They also have a 45 tooth "premium" ratchet, and they just released their first true fine (90) tooth a few months ago. If you are a fan of the trusty old tools your dad used Proto is a great American made brand.
I've used the same Proto 5449 for almost 40 years, and I prefer its selector position to modern ratchets: Instead of the selector pointing in the direction of work-movement, it points "lefty-loosey / righty-tighty". Lol
Just subscribed, and only because I had a 1/4" ratchet without any brand markings or p/n or model number, nothing.... So I believe it's a Proto. This is based on looking for ratchet rebuild parts kit or a video. I found you working on what looks a lot like mine, except size. Mine has same works inside except a fine ratchet gear. Mine vibrated apart in my tool box while I was traveling in my truck. I found all the parts, but I had no idea how to put it together.... I followed you as you did this gear replacement... And had mine put back together shortly after your video, but I watched all the way through the first time, and then watched it again following along.... Then watched a 3rd time to leave a comment and a thumbs up! Thanks.....
Thanks for the great video my friend. I never paid attention to the selector on my Proto wratchet. I have taken it apart and cleaned it and lubed it. Mine is 3/4 drive heavy as heck but has been used and abused. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again
Yeah, i used to like that craftsman ratchet until I needed a more standard handle. I have two versions of that thing btw one 60 tooth and one 84 tooth.
upside downdog Ive got one of those gearless ratchets, a Titan 3/8 stubby / mini. Those things are fun to use and occasionally a huge timesaver. Agree sometimes I like to use a 24 tooth, 30 tooth, 36 tooth in place of the usual 60, 72, 80, 88, and 90. Sometimes I feel like a half inch Cornwell 30 or Duralast 36.
I'm glad you posted this video. I've been considering buying that rebuild kit. It's actually for an Armstrong f91 ratchet. But looking at the rebuild kits they look very similar to the Proto. I can't find an Armstrong rebuild kit anywhere though so I was hoping this one would work. After watching the video it's obvious that this ratchet head is much bigger than the Armstrong. The Armstrong has more of a cylinder shaped cogwheel where this one's more like a disc. Anyone know where I can get an Armstrong f91 rebuild kit?
Prototools warrantied forever. you could have called Stanley/proto. I guarantee you they would have sent you out a rebuild kit for free or at maximum you might have had to pay the shipping but I doubt it.
Great video. I've been looking at this ratchet and the tekton 24" 1/2" drive. Some people said the proto is not the smoothest due to the teeth count. I'd rather pay for something made in USA. What would you suggest?
Nice rebuild of that Proto ratchet. I just picked up one that was frozen. I was able to get it apart and it was frozen because the dog on the left had moved to far over to right and jammed the rachet up so it would work. The the ratcheting gear seams to be sloppy in the plates as if it is either warn to much or it is missing a washer. I noticed yours was tighter in hole and the selector switch was shaped better. Have you ever had this issue and how did you correct it?
those protos are simple to rebuild. Ive never rebuilt mine but I took it apart to lube it. and Ive never paid attention that that the selector is backwards now thats going to kill me. lol
Hey if you go view Mac tools monthly flyer on there wen site they now are selling *gray pneumatic and *Astro pneumatic lights and vim tools and sunex. It's really odd. Maybe you can do a video on what you think. I just find it so odd that there out sourcing so heavily
yeah the selling point of a fine tooth ratchet is swing arc and stronger due to contact surface but the most common reason of failure is the screws get loose and then the gear becomes loose and are not fully meshed with the paw causing low surface area which the bigger teeth minimize this effect and worsen with the more teeth ratchets. this is why that design isn't preferable on fine tooth ratchets
I have a bunch of old ratchets, including a similar Proto one. It is one of my least favourite ratchets. The tooth count is low and the head is big enough to become an obstruction. Proto still seems to manufacture these old ratchet designs. They can be found on Amazon for $30-$40. I'm not even sure if these are worth rebuilding unless you've got a Proto dealer that will do it under warranty.
This looks like a Proto ratchet. Proto (Professional Tools) will provide a rebuild kit AT NO CHARGE, so there is no reason to buy a rebuild kit unless one is in a hurry to fix the ratchet. Call them, provide the number off the ratchet, wait for the parts kit. I use Super Lube when rebuilding. I've done a couple of SK ratchets, two Proto's, and a Craftsman.....Craftsman was the hardest due to that little ball bearing moving out of position.
I need that switch, any chance I can buy it off of you? Golf clap for knowing the difference between a dog and a pawl. +1 I have the 5449, its a short handle, the 5450 is long handle, same ratchet. My switch doesn't clear the dog out on one side, unless you over twist it into the raised area, the rest is good i tried re-peining it, and it works better, but the clearance is still in the hundredths. My refurbish of the 3/4" version of this ratchet is here: ruclips.net/video/inIizi3htPE/видео.html

David Anderson yes I have the 45 tooth premium versions......they are tough as hell

Thanks for great video! Without it, I would never be able to rebuild my rachet!
Proto Makes Some Very Awesome Tools especially the Old Skool Proto
They were plomb tools before they were proto. Definitely high quality tools .
Love Proto ratchets good video buddy!
Now how do you go about replacing the switch. Iv got handed one and the switch needs replacing with the rest of the insides
Great video. Thanks! from Korea
a Question what color red matches photo socket boxes ant info would be great thanks Mark

I have the 1/2"short handle and the 3/4" "skookum as frig". I refurbished the 3/4" in this video: ruclips.net/video/inIizi3htPE/видео.html
Garnett, you got the right kit. Proto offers one kit for following: 5449, 5449BL, 5450, 5450BL 👍
Ah, now that makes sense! Thanks.
That’s a great video!!! Very helpful. My ratchet broke. How do I find the matching parts??
I like the old ratchets. That slim Craftsman is pretty sweet too. I like to use molybdenum grease in mine. Vaseline works well if its all you have.
Yeah, i used to like that craftsman ratchet until I needed a more standard handle. I have two versions of that thing btw one 60 tooth and one 84 tooth.
Garnett-Tools
So which do you prefer? Fine tooth feel nice but I like my older coarse ones. For tight spaces I have sprag roller type.

I use RLL, but paint it on lightly with a kid's water color paintbrush.
How do no replace the selector switch?
Sick ass video Garnett!!! Keep them coming

I needed to see how to replace the selector lol the new one doesn’t seam to stay together.

Thanks, for posting. This is a interesting and informative video. Cheers !
RONS BEERS & TOOLS -Vietnamese beer (33)?
Which way go the springs, large side against pawl, or small side?
Larger side of the spring goes on the body of the ratchet and the small side against the pawl

Anthony Morency have you tried contacting Apex directly? It's possible they can still help you even if Armstrong is now discontinued.

The rebuild kit probably fits several models
+christopher newton It sure does, Thanks👍
The selector is correct. Lefty loose, righty tighty.

It's the age old question; do you prefer lower cost?
Garnett-Tools Id rather pay a few more dollars for quality instead of price

+gmlover82 Thanks!
Ahh, so that’s what the two holes are for behind the selector. I’ve wondered since I got my first Proto, a 3/8 in a 1/4 body, not long ago.
Didn't even know Proto offered something like that with these. They sure don't with their new ones.
got a part number for that? lol
Garnett-Tools its a smooth little bugger. Pretty strong too:

great vid
the proto ratchet is a very good and durable, i have one and the only thing am scared is if it get lost or someone steal it.

yeah, some genius decided they didn't like the ol lefty loosie righty tightly and changed it?

was that a harbor freight screw driver you were using ( I like it)
yeah and the wrong size. . . .but it worked, and that's what counts.
The AK 47 of rachets
That was painless, and the kit is really reasonably priced.
+Rob's Wrenches even cheaper from Zoro I believe $11!
He never put the friction washers back in if a machanic you would be missing engine parts because he forgot alzimers or ego
Lefty loosy. That’s why it’s that way
