Shadow Systems requires a break-in period because it has tighter tolerances compared to a Glock. Tigher tolerances means better accuracy and function once everything settles between barrel, slide, frame. Shadow System manual explicitly says that there is a 200 rounds break-in period. One can run the Glock slide on a Shadow frame but one cannot run a Shadow slide on a Glock frame, you have both pistols, try it! If one doesn’t care about tolerances and/or to maximize the accuracy of a weapon system then Shadow Systems might not be for you. Get a Glock and a Kalashnikov while you are at it. By the way I did break-in my MR920 Elite and the XR920 Elite with Winchester FMJ 115 gr. shooting 200 rounds on each with ZERO malfunction. Sold my G19 and G45 and will replace my G17 in the near future with a DR920. I guess to each their own!

The MR920 has a much tighter tolerance around the chamber and the slide all together. That is why there is the break in period. i do not completly disagree with it being out of the box ready to run but you should never carry a defense system that you are not familiar with. Thus the break in period which is really only 3 or 4 boxes takes most people 30 mins to 1 hr to shoot that.

  • @deputydang8291

Just bought an mr920 elite today. Set up up the grip and mounted a 508t. The optic mounting system is where this gun really shines. The fit is TIGHT! Absolutely no play and the mounting screws are at least 1/2” long and actually engage the entire length of the the screws. If you run a dot this gun is the one!

I bought my first shadow systems mr920 last fall for 699. (Combat, no optic cut or threaded barrel). It was a no brainer when gen 5’s were going for 650-700 at the rime and you still get the shitty Glock grip, shitty sights, shitty everything else that Glock offers. I had two last round feed issues within the first four mags through the gun. (With the supplied pmags) No issues since. Over 2500 now. All with strictly pmags.
My second mr920 combat with optic cut in fde was 750. Had one, last round feed issue on the second mag through the gun. No issues since and it’s over 1500 now. Both pmags and oem Glock mags.
My last shadow systems was supposed to be a Dr920 full size, but they had the Mr920L (g17 slide on a g19 frame) right beside it. I chose the 920L for more versatility with my couple dozen g19 mags. No issues from out of the box to 2700 rounds as of Saturday. It’s my favorite of the three. The mr920L is only offered in an elite version (window cuts on the slide, more serrations on the top, optic cuts etc). It was 999. The DR920 is offered in the elite version (msrp 999) and the combat with optic cut for msrp 899. The DR920 is not offfered in the non optic cut combat like the MR920 is. The optic cut adds a bit of cost, but is worth it for not having to use adapter plates and not having to run suppressor height sights like every other optic cut gun out there. A holosun 507c will 1/3 cowitness with stock height sights.
To anyone thinking they are expensive glocks, we you couldn’t be more wrong. You can’t build these guns, with these options for the price. For someone that’s shoots, they are a bargain. If you don’t shoot, buy a 6-700 dollar Glock and be happy.
Fwiw, my sig 938 had a broken-break in. Three trips to sig in 500 rounds. Xds45 when they were released had 3-4 failures in the first 100 rounds and nothing after. I had over 5k when I sent it in for the recall almost a decade ago.. my sig365, two broken strikers in 200 rounds. That was my last attempt at sigs. All guns need a break in. Especially anything with tighter fitting slides, barrels etc. the shadow systems are match grade guns I’ll never own another Glock
And lastly, the model numbers don’t change every year. The model numbers are when they were designed. MR918 is a 9mm multi-role released in 2018. The mr920 was improved, with a new frame, bigger beaver tail, pat pending optics mounting system was the multi role 9mm released in 2020. The Dr920 was the 9mm duty size (full size) released in 2020 (delayed due to COVID).
Not a paid shill, not affiliated with them. Bought all my own, been competitive shooting for 20 years and I was blown away with my first one. I’ll be a customer for life.

OEM glock barrel (other brands too) have softer material barrels, so there break in period is much much lower. A lot more than that of a gun built for competition shooting, which has harder, stronger barrels. Basically low end materials means you can shoot the gun in more or less peak performance, after just a few rounds but one with good, expensive materials has a longer break end period so you have to put rounds in to shoot at peak performance

Groups were a bit wild, but I have watched just about every vid on RUclips about SS break in so I’m not too concerned. Think the light strikes were hard primers bc I could replicate the problem in another pistol. I did find out that the striker channel needs to be dry. If any lube gets in there an mixes with any ammo debris it will cause the striker to short stroke causing light strikes too. Another 100-150 rounds should settle things out the trigger noticeably improved with one sessions use. Good luck with yours!☘️

Regardless of break-in, the firearm will be more reliable than the person firing it if they are not trained.
Firearms have a break in period for a reason. This is standard. If you want to avoid break in and want reliability out the door, buy a revolver. If a person buys a firearm, the first thing they need is training and time behind the trigger to be able to safely use the firearm.

There is not a line of firearms that have not had issues, that is why you have test your firearms and make sure that it will work during a worse case scenario. I had to send mine back the gun I bought had a defective slide. They currently have it and said they will be sending me a new slide. I bought a new barrel from them and put it in the gun and it kept getting stuck out of battery. Would not function at all. I though the new barrel was the issue but when I spoke with them they immediately knew it was a defective slide, so they are aware their slide are defective.
I never would know the slide was defective until I put the new barrel in there because the barrel it came with worked pretty good compared to the new barrel. Out of 400 rounds I had 4 malfunctions, 3 of which were after the break in period which is still pretty crappy for glock.

Shadow Systems released a video explaining why a break-in period is necessary for their pistols. You see break in periods required for ALL high-end pistols with any tightly fitted components. Just check out any good custom-fitted 1911. You will get malfunctions in the first 10 mags, then they will run as reliably as any other platform. The parts are fit tighter for better accuracy. This is why Les Baer can offer a 1.5" group @ 50 yards guarantee on their custom 1911s. They will also not accept returns if you haven't put a few hundred rounds through the pistol. Malfunctions in the first handful of mags is often a sign of quality craftsmanship, not general unreliability.

I have three of just about the exact same model gun (not a Shadow Systems) 1 has never had any issues at all, 1 had a couple of failed feeds and failed ejects, and one had a very minor issue with going into battery a couple of times (though unsure if that was me or the gun on that one). All three guns now have about 800+ rounds each through them and they will eat any ammo I run through them. All issues I had with them were in the first 100 - 200 rounds.
Also in this video it was only one malfunction and you only shot a couple of mags through each one. Yes it happened in less then 50 shots but that may be the only one that gun ever has and any gun runs the chance of that happening at some point in its life. Which is why you should be prepared to clear issues like that quickly.
Now I will agree that many people will buy a gun and never shoot it until they have to so it should work out of the box, but at the same time that is why you should have one in the chamber because you know that one will work unless there is a major issue with the firing pin or it is a dud round. But hell I have seen people buy their first gun and not even get ammo for it.
We have to get new gun owners to understand they need to practice or at the very least go shoot a box through it to make sure there are no issues with it before they trust their life with it.
