  • Yul Brynner's portrayal as King Mongkut in the well-known stage musical The King and I has remained popular over 40 years after his death. However, the public's perception of Yul Brynner shifted dramatically after shocking revelations made by his son Rocky went viral on the internet. If you want to hear what his kid said about his father, stick around to the end.

I saw "The King and I" as a young tween (late 70s or early 80s) and fell madly in love with Yul Brynner. When he died, I cried and mourned for him for nearly a year. It sounds a bit silly now as a 57-year-old adult, but he was my first love. He was so handsome and such a brilliant actor.

Oh please. So he made demands. A lot of stars did that and still do the today. There are tons of celebs that are difficult to work with, have special and often weird demands. This isn't anything new. Too bad his children felt the need to try and sully his name for money (we all know they got paid to go on camera and talk about their famous father). Brynner died far too soon. I remember his PSA's about smoking and seeing him on talk showing taking about his cancer and smoking - urging people to quit. And why are you showing a photo of Mr. T and Mohammad Ali?

Yul was married 4 times. His wife was an actress named Virginal Gilmore. She was born Sherman Virginia Poole (July 26, 1919 - March 28, 1986). Her father was an 8th cousin to my mother via a family named PACKARD that arrived from England to Massachusetts before 1646. Yul and Virginia had one child, a son named "Yul", who was nicknamed "Rocky" at Age 6. Therefore, Rocky Brynner (1946 - 2023) was my 9th cousin 1x removed.

You skipped so many parts of his early young life. As a young man in Paris, he joined the circus there and worked as an acrobat in addition to his gypsy singing. After he migrated to New York in 1941 (as you say), he was working as a director for the new medium of television when (1) he first did LUTE SOng with Mary Martin; and then in 1951, he auditioned for the Siamese king in Rodgers and Hammerstein's new musical that year, THE KING AND I. You just glossed over these facts.
