The Hunt For A Lost 12th-Century English Town | Time Team | Chronicle

- In the 12th century, many towns were designed and laid out on regular lines. The people of Plympton believe there is enough evidence to plot the layout of the medieval town which surrounds the ruins of their castle, which was formerly owned by the immensely powerful and wealthy de Redvers family. As usual, Time Team have three days to find it. Back gardens and interiors will provide the clues, rather than frontages which have probably been altered many times in the last 800 years. So they will need plenty of help from local householders. They are joined by Plymouth city archaeologist Keith Ray and dendrochronologist Robert Howard.

You’ve got to love archaeologists that take care not to upset a blind bunny…
I’ve watched TimeTeam for so long, I’ve aged alongside the team. We’ve all grown grey together!
I just love late in the show when Tony says to Mick 'You are really a big kid aren't you', and Mick just smiles and nods his head. I just love the genuine affection people at times show to each other, i love this show.
Sadly Mick died ten years ago, aged only 66 😢
Yes they do love each other l
@@catherinecornick7940 Not i any sexual way, but Mick was a lovely human being, and he displayed his respect and almost a courtly, genuine affection he had for others on the team. Like parents you are not supposed to have a favourite child, but in secret you do and i think Tony was Mick's favourite of his 'Children'.
I've often thought they lucked out putting the group together. It's natural that they'd get along, having the common passion & goal, but the comradery of the group goes way beyond friendly colleagues. Even in the early episodes, you can see them developing into a true family. I think one of the things that truly binds them, is that they're all so humble & respectful of each other.
As far as favourites go, Mick might be mine. We are two peas from the same pod, except i'm the female version. My life support only kicks in around 10:00, i DON'T do running, & we have the same fashion sense, his jumpers & touque are right up my alley.
@@nevillemignot1681Tony & Mick have history, before TT. If i'm remembering correctly, Mick & Tony were basically the genesis of Time Team. Tony was well into archeology & went on a few digs, where he met Mick & spent weeks working for him on a dig project. The rest, as They say, is history. 😂 A few years later, we had Time Team. I'm pretty sure Phil was in from the start as well.
This sort of episode is my absolute favourite! Going into people's houses and yards, looking for clues and piecing together original towns and buildings. The quiet remains of ordinary people's lives, tucked away under the ordinary lives of today. ❤
This American never knew very much about castles until I found Time Team on RUclips. I think I have watched every episode here. I subscribe to History Hit too. I love this show!
As a North American, it's fascinating to me to imagine chipping away some plaster from one's wall and finding an 850-year-old fireplace.
Me too
If they found something I would be so excited and get them to dig as much as they wanted of my lawn up.
I do think that the supposed "row" over the dating is the most polite row I have ever seen. So sweet.
Thats a proper English row innit?
After the Time Team have done their digging, do they then have to fill in all the pits and repair all the walls they break through? Or do they do this for some places upon request, but in other cases, the homeowner agrees to repair everything?
@@lemorab1No, it’s part of the job to put everything back as it was unless the project is being taken over by the local archaeology council or something like that.
Oh my! These homes are so beautiful. How amazing to have a space with this much history.
Brilliant episode. Imagine living in a home with rafters 800 years old!
Just had a thought, 🤔 i wonder if David & Sally purposely called Time Team to have their shed demolished & carted away. 🤭 With the trenches being dug, they'd also have the garden prepped for that planned extension. 😂
This is one of my favourite top 3 episodes. I've been fascinated with the history & evolution of buildings from an early age. When in uni, my older sister had a flat in what had been a single family, 3 story early Victorian townhouse. I'd sit in the garden trying to imagine the generations that lived there, how each used & adapted the house to suit them & the changes made when modern technology was incorporated. I would have been eagerly following Carenza around on her house inspection tour.
One of the very best of Time Team!
God I love this so much!
Its exciting, its awesome to see how you get so much information about how things were back then.
Indeed you roll back time and see it.
This is one of the best TT episodes ever.
Bravo! Excellent episode! I especially enjoy getting into the nitty-gritty of the architecture.
It's so cool to be around so much history and to let the time team in to search for stuff ❤❤❤ I hope they end up keeping the big fireplaces cool talking point
I love the old episodes where everyone is still alive and Tony actually has hair!
47:35 Mick: You watch the telly. If Mickey Mouse comes on, we have the wrong one. Carenza: Oh, I dunno.
I love her sense of humor! Very understated and wry.
Ive never seen Mick so enthusiastic.
You can tell it’s an old show by Tony’s hair and the Silicone Graphics machine in use.
These are all totally interesting. Thank you for doing g tem
17:41 Bericks found the real life door to medieval Narnia 😂😂
I LOVED this show!
How cool it is to live on all that Archeology!
I've often wondered how much more they could discover if they had 5 days instead of 3? Quite often, it just starts to get interesting right when they have to shut down lol! Nice way to keep people addicted though lol!
::knockknock:: "Hi, I'm from Time Team, we'd like to dig a trench about 7 metres into your front yard becuase we think there might be the foundation of a medieval building there..." Lady is like, "Um... you want to what?"
I don't think you can put styles firmly in one era. For example, perhaps a fireplace needs repairing/updating and the lady of the house prefers a style that her grandmother had in her house that was, perhaps, built 75 or 100 years previously. Just a thought!
There was no fascination with the past until recent times
The demolition of that shed upset me. All the slate and brick just broken and land filled!
I wonder if they kept some of the stones.... But I agree. That was very upsetting to watch.
The English routinely rebuild ancient structures that modern U.S. cities would never allow to remain, bless their hearts.
The way they are all buzzing about their findings... It's so cute to see. They are like kids at Christmas. 🥰
Enjoyed immensely.
Were the property deeds in Latin or Middle English?
English.
43:53 As the drummer for Spinal Tap arrives on the scene...
@24:37 SCARY FACE! 😱
Where’s Baldric ?
He's around the back hatching a cunning plan...........
At 34 minutes Tony says he's looking for "concrete dates." The problem is that they didn't have concrete back then. 😂😅
Ummmm.. yes, they did. Romans invented it and used it all over including
Britain.
Sorry, concrete has been around since at least the Romans, (as the other comment pointed out). It's better than modern concrete as well, which is why a large part of the Colosseum is still standing centuries later, while our infrastructure crumbles after a couple decades.
@@therealhellkitty5388
After the fall of Rome the science of concrete was lost.
Wow it looks like a winner but do your research,I think it’s beautiful
This must be quite old i recognise the computers an laptops white pc inacator to me 486 or pentium 1 computers
20:07 God, that woman is stunning.
She's absolutely an English rose.
Alice and Faye are my favorites 😂
Sue Breeze
Tony with hair.
22:38 - Oops. They gave away their staged theatrics. Should have had a camera person running with Carenza. They're filming her close up when she supposedly rings the doorbell for the first time, yet no camera person is anywhere around in the immediately preceding aerial views.
Yeah, but ultimately it doesn't matter. I think Carenza spoke to the lady of the house and had a preliminary discussion, then called the cameraman for the second "introduction"; or else the cameraman showed up pronto in a car. Either way, I don't really care. The excitent is real.
Picky details you are not supposed to notice.
Too many commercials!
odd, I never got 1.......interesting...
That’s RUclips, or History Hit’s doing.
SUE THE MAP EXPERT IS KINDA HOT...
42: 11 Carenza and her "...about thaaaah"s. I suspect her family are toffs and she went to public school.
Not as posh as Francis Pryor! But yes she went to a private school
And she's very well educated with a great intelligence.
Don't be crass. She earned her degree same as anyone else.
Nothing crass about my comment. Toffs are just as welcome to be archaeologists as much as the average plebe,@@joshschneider9766
WOW BRITISH TOWN HOUSES ARE SO SMALL!
I have to go. I can't stand T Robinson. Is there some way of blocking anything with him in it?
Not on Time Team. He's not on the new series, however.
Um… Watch something else? Sir Tony was the presenter for every Time Team episode for 20 years.
I can't stand people who speak from ignorance and bigotry. Is there any way of blocking them ? Philip Townsend 4026.
stop it w the "geophyzz" please
If you think it was bad twenty years ago you should see what they're doing in the new time team episodes 😂
