Outstanding find in outstanding condition. Love the 880. I had one and used it for all my fieldwork and baling…and it really performed. We converted mine to 12 volt. I think it was one of the big tractors of its time. Ours was gas/wide front with a full hydraulic loader. Traded for an 1855.
Thank you, Dave. Mine is already 12 volt, so I won't have to do that. It was the biggest and most powerful Oliver row crop of its day. While the 990 was more powerful, it wasn't a row crop tractor. At the time, the 880 was competing with tractors like the IH 560.
Charlie, that is a really nice looking 880 Oliver. When I was a kid I didn't even know those even existed Dad and Grandpa both had 770s. I don't blame you I would have got that tractor as well. Thanks Michael
Well, I wanted one for a while now and have seen some for sale. But this one just seemed like "the one" for me. I guess all the stars aligned. Thanks for stopping by, as always, Michael.
Hi Charlie ! Soybean Farmer and Scott ,too, are looking down admiring your 880. And a sharp one it IS. My son and I traveled from NC IN to central MI yesterday afternoon/evening for a set of doors for our 970 Case. I enjoy the adventures we get to have, even the far away ones. Congratulations. I too, always wanted an 880 while I had my 88.
Thank you. I'd like to think that Soybean Farmer (Jim) and Scott would approve. I know they loved their tractors like I do Olivers. And I agree that getting to go on the adventure is a big part of it. Glad you got to share the adventure with your son.
Man yeah Mr Charlie, that is awesome!!! You sure did well!! Can't wait to see more on this one!! Hopefully the snow isn't too bad for y'all!!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲
I have a few little things I want to do to this tractor, but I can't wait to do something with it. It's now the next morning and we do have a couple inches of snow on the ground with more coming.
@@TheGrumpyFarmer Like my pal Nelson, I have a hard time passing up a good deal! 😃😃😃😃 Except he's got that "Pennies on the dollar" thing going for him, which I haven't fully mastered yet. Maybe he'll tutor me.
That’s awesome sir congratulations, I had one but I didn’t get to mess with it much because Ross wanted it for his fleet so I traded it to him. I know it’s gonna be taken care of Ross will make it better and fix it up
Thanks Craig! I remember the videos on that, that were done by Bandit and by Ross. I remember you and Bandit bringing it to him. Ross did get it going again, although I don't know if he dealt with all its issues. Didn't you get a tractor from Ross in return?
Awesome addition to the stables, Charlie. Did I hear it's a 1962? That's a tough one to find. The 1600 had come out, so most of the 880s built in 62 were road rollers, very few tractors.
Thanks Chris. I think it was a great find and I'm really pleased with it. A few little things I want to do to it. And Yes, according to the serial number, it's a '62. I didn't realize there weren't many row crops made that year.
I was doing some reading on 880's recently and I guess the power adjust wheels were supposed to be pretty common on that tractor, but I never saw any in person either. I also have a Super 88 and it doesn't have that style of wheels. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Congratulations Charlie, that is a very neat tractor, what I like about Oliver's are they have pretty much by default a six cylinder engine, I know it might not be true and I don't know Oliver's at all, here in South Africa we had them in the 70's/80's as construction tractors with GM Detroit engines, I never seen an agricultural model around here, only see them on RUclips mainly USA
They were mostly 6 cylinder tractors, and for that reason, ran a lot smoother than Farmalls, for example (but I'm not putting Farmalls down). There were some models that had 4 cylinders, like my Oliver 66.
This is my first tractor with a power booster - my 770 doesn't have it. From what I've read, many of the power booster units went bad over time and it's not that common to find a tractor that has a power booster that actually works. I was very luck to find this one. I would have preferred a diesel, but when this came along, I couldn't pass it up.
@pagrainfarmer it's the sprag clutch that wears out. It's not the greatest design, but it does work well. The spray clutches are around and expensive, so most people did not repair them. I like it enough I would definitely maintain it. Mostly, I like it for baling, I can slow down and speed up without clutching. Expect when nose down a hill. I like pulling my oliver 4240 3 bottom plow with my 770, but in our soft sandy soil i would benefit from a little wider tire. On my 770, I went to 14.9x38 tires. The taller side walls and give it a better ride than the 15.5x38 tires. Looking back, I think I should have gone with the 16.9's, but what I have works fine.
😊😊 IVE seen alot of tractors 🚜 😊 loaded on trailers like that they are better when U have a 3RD ramp in the middle many U see 👀 😊 do have a belt pulley on them 😊😊I would put new 1O PLY tires on the back good 👍 😊 tires 😊😊 OMG 11 22 2O24
I know what you mean by the 3rd ramp. They would be nice to have with a tricycle front end. And you're right, the 880's without Power Booster DID have a belt pulley. The search for tires is ongoing now.
Nice tractor. Looks like it was well taken care of. Always exciting when you get a new one. That's good it is already converted to 12 volt. Any specific plans on what you will use it on? Looks like it will be big enough for a lot of work but also handy as well. We got about a foot of snow here in CNY. Made for a fun time doing chores this morning.
We don't have near that much snow - only a couple inches so far. Not sure what I'll use it for yet - may use it on the haybine or for raking. I think I'll probably try it on the baler as well, although I had planned on using the 770 I bought last year as the baler tractor. We'll see. In any event, I do plan to enjoy it. How far are you from where I bought the 880 - the Stanley/Geneva NY area?
@@pagrainfarmer Sounds good. I am about 2 and a half hours SE of Stanley. Halfway between Binghamton and Oneonta off of I88. I grew up about 25 miles South of Buffalo.

Sorry Fred - I didn't stop making videos - just got behind. I do have some video of harvest and cornstalk chopping that I will be putting up soon. Yeah, my buddy Joe is a great mechanic and has seen it all. It's good to have someone like him to go to with questions about stuff like that. My wife doesn't like to drive that far in a day unless we're doing something she finds really interesting, and I can't blame her. It was a 12 hour day in the vehicle, except for the time we spent looking at and loading the tractor. It was exciting for me. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving as well, and it was nice talking to you here. Come back again.
We used to have an 880 diesel. Only real problem we ever had with it is the power steering pump. The pump vanes got wore in it and would wedge and lock it up, so my dad would just take out the one that wedged and the opposite one since parts were obsolete. It would just steer a little harder with less vanes. I wish I could find out if the guy I sold it to ever did restore it. Sounds like you made good time on your trip. I bought my milking parlor out of the finger lakes area. It was about a 3 1/2-4 trip there but about a 12 hour day round trip. 😅
Yeah, we had no traffic problems and the trip was good. About 4 hours and 45 minutes each way, but a 12 hour trip overall. Glad we didn't plan to make the trip today, as it's really putting down snow out there right now. Several inches on the ground. I won't have to worry about the power steering pump problem on this one, as it doesn't have power steering. 🤣🤣🤣
@pagrainfarmer we're just getting flurries but nothing sticking.... Yet 🤣 I guess even though I'm in the snow belt off lake Erie and swear about the lake effect sometimes it is a benefit by keeping the air slightly warmer because of the water temperature.
