The problem is that there is a tab on top of the carriage, when it gets hot this tab gets caught on the underside of the grey plastic nearest you. Just break off this tab and it will not get stuck. It worked for me.
When you turn the scanner on the scanner mechanism should be all the way to the right, not the left where yours is. You can see that it is searching for the line for alignment. YOu need to open up scanner and adjust belt so scanner starts all the way to the right.
Tiredfingers: you need some sleep. This model does it's white reference on the left side between the large glass and the slit glass. Larger models like the M2727 do it's reference check on the right side but this model won't physically go under the right side of the glass.
