- Diana once again participates in the Amazon tradition of Bullets and Bracelets to prove she is worthy of entering the outside world. Again she also receives her costume and weapons from her mother, Queen Hippolyta. From the first episode of Wonder Woman Season 2 on CBS. I love how they made the Bullets & Bracelets an repeated thing, so that the 'champion of the Amazons', i.e. the one to hold the title of Wonder Woman, has to constantly prove herself for it. So Diana could be potentially replaced by another. I love how its inclusion also mirrors the Greek celebration of sports from antiquity.
When she spins I love how she has this look like, "Whew! That felt good. I haven't had an occasion to twirl in decades!" :-)
What a classic Lynda Carter is my favorite Wonder woman. What little boy growing up back in the 70's/80's didn't have a crush on her?? Lynda Carter is one of the most beautiful ladies in the World😉.

The interesting thing about this contest is that unlike the Bullets and Bracelets from the S1 opener, Wonder Woman and her competitor don't shoot directly at each other. They shoot at a concrete target, and the girls block the intended path of the bullet with their bracelets. In S1, the bullets were shot right to the face of the two fighters. If they didn't block the bullets, they were dead. I'm guessing the producers of the show realized how crazy that must have looked to a young viewer.
lovecuthbert The good news is that you can compare and contrast the Bullets and Bracelets test from both the 1975 ABC pilot and the 1977 CBS premiere. There's more money invested in the pilot and they can take a little more liberties. The ABC pilot was shot in a way that it may go to series (it ultimately did), whereas the CBS premiere was the continuation of the show, just on a different network, of course, and taking place in then-present 1977. So, they remained in the restrictions of 1970's series television rules. By the way, this was the only CBS episode to show Paradise Island.

So far I've seen three different actresses play Diana's mum unless she's a shapeshifter.

@caribeandude1 Carolyn Jones was beginning her battle with cancer around this point in the series. She was too unwell to be a part of it from then on. She lost her battle in 1980. We miss her. Rest in peace My Queen.

In the Comic, Diana had to return to Paradise Island once a year to keep her title, AND her immortality. Kind of like the World's Worst Beauty Contest. The "Orano" arc was excellent. (Ms. Prince, Why didn't you answer the Door?!!?)
It was 30+ years later. Season 1 was set during WW2....Season 2 was set in the current times (the 70's).
I like how it's a tradition. Just like our ancient Amazon heritage, we enjoy using a weapon created within the last 400 or so years. Yes, lets deflect them while a crowd of people are standing by and could get hit. ...well, I guess if all the tidbits really mattered then I'd talk about her spin transformation but.... eh, idc, I still loved Wonder Woman.

Season 2, episode1: THE RETURN OF WONDER WOMAN
What happened to Carolyn Jones that played the Queen in season one? One thing I don't think that ever occured, the Queen was never called 'HIppolyta', and the island was 'Paradise' and not Themyscira.
Sadly, Carolyn Jones was fighting cancer at this time, and was quite ill, and unable to return as Queen Hippolyta. She was my favorite out of all three actresses that portrayed The Queen.
dianaAthemiscyra This has become a bit of an urban legend regarding the timeline and her not returning to play the Queen. Jones was simply unavailable due to other project commitments, including an Adams Family TV movie, a feature film, and other TV guest appearances during this time. She continued to work for a few years, and originated the role of Myrna Clegg on the CBS daytime soap, Capitol in 1982. It was the year prior, 1981, that she was sadly diagnosed with colon cancer - which she initially hid from her friends & colleagues. She went through a period of remission, but the cancer ultimately returned. She passed away in 1983. (Someone below mistakenly stated that she died in 1980). I loved Jones in the role, too... light years better than scenery-chewing Cloris Leachman. But I think I equally loved Beatrice Straight's version: More than any, she sold the idea that she was this regal queen of this island of extraordinary women - and her maternal energy with Carter is very convincing. If a man ever showed up there again to threaten her, I think Straight's version wouldn't necessarily need protecting - she could take'm.

That's because they didn't stat calling the island Themyscira until the 1987 relaunch of the characters after the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS storyline.
Roman Seano I understand what you are saying about Clovis Leachman. By the time she did the WW pilot, she was well identified as Phyllis Lindstrom on "Mary Tyler Moore" (which just spun her off in "Phyllis." Maybe that's why she played the Queen with a little more comedic flair. But Leachman had, up to that point, some seriously- respected dramatic chops. And, while I liked her and, more so, Carolyn Jones as the Queen, Beatrice Strait had a far more regal air about her in her portrayal. It's a shame that the producers didn't bring her back more often.

That's not season 2. That's the pilot episode. Confusing because the same episode was done as the pilot with a different actress as queen, and the losing bullets and bracelets competitor was nicked in the arm by a bullet.
Would have been nice to see Avadnea(sp?) come to the outside world to visit with her cousin.

Great scene, and in syndication it was usually cut (they went straight from the council voting for Diana to be allowed to leave right to the Queen giving her back the costume). It is also the very last time we'd ever hear the Olympic type ceremonial fanfare, and the only time it was used in the 1970s episodes.
So sad that Evande (Dorrie Thomson) just passed away she also was a "Wonder Woman" very Beautiful! RIP

@stephy7475 Cloris Leachman who played her mother in the pilot episode was either unavailable or uninterested in playing the role again. Carolyn Jones played the role in a few subsequent episodes. Then for the updated version of the show neither actress was available. Enter Beatrice Straight
After all these years I just realized the blonde gal was holing the gun wrong. She had her finer on the trigger too soon.
WHY DID SHE DO THIS COMPETITION AGAIN? SHE ALREADY DID IT ONCE IN THE PILOT WITH A MASK.
Because Evaghne (the blond amazon) had challenged her, and Diana accepted the challenge Evaghne gave her.

i always wondered this and i have no idea if this scenario was EVER in any issue of wonder woman: like what would happen if wonder woman walked into a room (unknowing it was a trap), the lights were completely turned off and she was in total black darkness and then people start shooting at her? how and would she be able to STILL? deflect bullets when she couldn't see in the dark?...
+mbblover I don't know, but I would prefer that she could see her enemies and defend herself from attacks.

There's nothing wrong with corny. Everything is too bleak and dark now. This reflected more optimistic times.
In the comics, all Amazons were required to wear their bracelets to remind them of their failure to uphold the will of The Gods of Olympus. Never figured out why none of the Amazons, except those in contest, never wore their own bracelets.
Yeah, that was the start of several moments of lazy exposition on CBS that you never would have seen when the show was on ABC.

Nope, it's season 2. This took place long after WW II. Diana had returned to Paradise Island and this occurred when the show changed networks.

you mean the other amazon? well accidentally on purpose right? The character fails, and the actor has to lose on purpose. But I totally get what you mean she pauses and doesn't block the last bullet, seems like on purpose but I think it was kinda supposed to be that cliched moment in an action movie where time slows down, so what seems like a long moment to us is not really that long. my Mom played that part and when she would get drunk she would reenact it, so.. I heard a lot about it.
