I think you did a fantastic job explaining to the young people that are first time hunters what they should take with them. I find it amazing after hunting for 40 years myself that you do exactly the same thing I do I thought I was the only one that put my snacks in Ziploc bags my thermos and socks and lo and behold you use the same deer drag I’ve been using for I don’t even know how many years I call it my good luck charm and I will not give it up I’ve replaced the rope on it three times so far. Great video and thank you from all of the first time hunters that are watching this
Backwoods Hill Billy, you'll have the best experience of your life. Good luck for getting a nice big buck. But hunting is also about the fun of the adventure.
Just when I think I've seen all of your older videos that pertain to my hunting style I discover one that I somehow managed to overlook....And this was one of those videos. Thanks for providing an excellent reference source for those of us who carry "hunting/fishing packs" but may have forgotten, or simply overlooked, some very useful, common sense, and perhaps even life saving items in those packs.
Good break down. Even if you’re not a younger person carrying a whistle is just a good idea. I worked EMS and search Rescue for several years. More often than not it was actually older or middle-aged people who had some sort of a medical or trauma event that we ended up going in for. Even had my great uncle who had fallen off a tree stand and broke his back. He was only about a quarter mile from his house, but nobody would’ve found him if my great aunt hadn’t started getting worried and gone out into the woods looking for him. She found him laying at the bottom of his tree stand conscious but unable to Move his legs.
I also carry in my bag a small roll of the white tall kitchen garbage bags to do a ranger roll of clean dry clothe just in case of sudden dunking or water over boots or falling into shallow ponds or streams while crossing it helps a lot that way if need be you can change into dry cloths and dry out wet depths over a small fire or something if you have the time.
Thanks for the great tips! I'm in Bucks County Pa, and 2013 was my first year hunting, and I'm hoping to get my first deer this year in 2014.. I'm having to watch RUclips as a hunting mentor since I don't have anyone to teach me. I found your video very helpful!! Thank you!
Stuff and Gabe , I wish you kids could have my daddy teach you hunting skills. He was knowledgeable and patient. And I guarantee you he could teach you how to follow a blood trail that was just leaking dime size drops. Keep at you, stay focused and in the moment, you'll do fine!
Wow! I've watched so many videos like this and honestly this one you did is fantastic!! I appreciate it bigtime... Thank you ... Cheers from Toronto, Canada :-)
Great video, I have been hunting for 3 years now and I used to not take a bag with me and now I do because I watched this video. Thank you for the great advice. I bow hunt and in November of 2016 I took my first deer with my bow. And I had my bag and everything in it was from this video plus some other items but mostly what you have said in this video. Thanks for the advice.
I have and use the same type of deer drag (11 bucks drug with it ) since the late 70's. Very cool to see your drag has the same wear and fade as mine ! That drag and my orange knit beanie that I wore when I killed my first Lebanon County,Pa. buck in 1974, are always with me. I also carry my Grandpa's old Western Auto hunting license holder from back in the early 50's. He introduced me to hunting at age 8 in Pa.. Just a traditional thing with me. I hunt both Lebanon County (home Co.) and Clearfield County, near Karthus .For years I hunted in Cameron County out of a tent with anywhere from 4 to 13 guys.
I have not been deer hunting yet I want to go on my b day with my uncle this video really helped me prepare love getting advice from experienced hunter thanks for the video its awesome
Thanks for making this vid a lot of good info .a tip on your haul line tie a knot every 12 to the18 inches all the way through the length of the line much easier to pull up your gear and especially lowering good hunting and be safe.
Great vid, I would only add that you should have some sort of fire starting materials with you just in case. I use the Dave Canterbury 5C's method and have it in my pack at all time. Of course if you are not deep in the woods, or are hunting with others that know where you are and when to expect you then it might not be necessary.
Everything you said is a good idea I even carry in mine the orange marking tape with the reflective strips on it and attach it to clip type clothespins for following blood trails it works fantastic and gives you a back trail to follow after recovering your deer
Great video. Another thing I have found helpful is a headlamp. when you are field dressing a deer in the dark by yourself it allows you to use both hands.
Great video. I definitely carry too much stuff. I'm in Fla. we need at least a liter or two of water. Gets heavy. radio, umbrella, thermacell, buck bomb, cover scent. I'm always soaking wet by the time I get up the tree. 80 degrees at night.
In that case, Puppernaut, you don't need this video. You need a shrink. WhiteRook85... thou covered young guys and girls but im a 40-something new to hunting. ;) I learn like lightning and am ready to go but this video really helped simplify packing and had some neat tricks too. Heres one for ya. Fill the sister thermos w coffee too and put it in another sock and/or hat but with the soapy water bottle. Then you'll have warm wash water and more hot coffee when you get back or chicken soup
Glad I could help, this is really what the video is for, the new people just starting out. As you get a few seasons under your belt you will find things that work for you. Good Luck this year!
When it comes to snacks, I take what doesn't smell odd to deer. Such as dehydrated apples, sesame seeds, trail mix, etc. It all goes in ziplock bags for less noise, as you mentioned. My pack also has a hydration pack. I fill it with water. I like the duct tape idea.
Great tip video ! Don't listen to criticism of your video ! You are an ordinary guy like us ! Thanks for buckshot test video ! Thanks for trying to help with everything you do !!
good video.. i also carry a book to read on day long sits during gun season. a simple first aid kit comes in handy too along with spare cordage. when hunting and scouting some cheap $2 cordage makes impromptu blinds easier to construct.
That's the only reason I was never a movie star... I can't handle the light and part of my natural appeal is my deep blues... they said Brad Pitt who...
Your story about how you got into it is the same thing with me. I'm fourteen years old and both my mom and my dad don't like hunting or even guns for that matter, the only way I am able to shoot or hunt is with my uncle, I don't know how or why I have liked this sport when my parents are so bias towards it but I am trying to get out with my uncle. It's pretty cool to know that it isn't just me that is in this situation.
Went hunting for the first time last year. I didn't get anything, but I appreciated the experience and look forward to going again next season. One thing I learned was your feet get COLD. Colder than any other part of the body really. Also I am going to eat a large warm breakfast beforehand. I didn't eat a whole lot last time (probably a little muffin or something).
***** the way we hunt is by sitting on the ground against a tree on the side of a hill. I want to hunt with a tree stand though but for now I am on foot.
***** dude a ghillie suit? really? I have to wear orange when hunting and I hunt in extreme cold. A ghillie suit would be useless. I am going hunting for deer, not playing call of duty. Also I am just going to wear more sock layers next time is all.
***** an animal being color blind doesn't always mean they see I'm black and white. If they can't see the red spectrum they are blind to it. Making them color blind.
I like this setup and am wondering if it would transition well for gun hunting also I hunt with a bow and a muzzle loader. What do you think any ideas?
Hey thanks for the tips and good luck this year if your going. This is going to be my second year out but its been about 18 years since the first time. Hopefully I'll have a little luck!
Wow, extremely helpful video. Thanks for the info. I am actually in China at the moment, but when I get back to Michigan I want to start hunting. After researching a little bit on the effects of the overpopulation of deer, I have decided it is the right thing to do. No one I know actually hunts, but my mother has experience with firearms, since she's Chinese, and Chinese people back then (and now) have to receive military training or something like that. I'm proud to have a mother who has used an AK-47 :D. Either way, still have much to learn about procedures and stuff, but I hope everything works out :). I suggest HEAD running gloves for a good pair of gloves. My mother bought me and my father each a pair one or two years back, and they're still in great condition. They give (have?) an amazing grip, are almost completely black, with the exception of the red HEAD logo and some removable tiny silver "stickers". The thumb and forefinger of both hands have touchscreen compatible material on them, so you don't need to worry about dropping a glove or anything like that. If you search "HEAD Digital Sport Running Gloves" on Google, you will see what I mean. DISCLAIMER: I was not paid to make that statement. I truly believe they are an excellent pair of gloves.
Great ideas. Definitely avoid the color blue when possible. It is one the few colors that deer see very well! But the mechanics gloves in camo or similar variant is what I use!
There are a lot of factors to look at. First does your State allow semi-auto rifles (PA does not). The second thing what is your budget? The 7.62x39 cartridge will get the job done, but the rifle weights in at 8lbs without a scope. So carrying it around all day, it will get heavy. The Ruger American is available for under $350 without a scope. Easy and safe bolt action., etc.
Much like your dad, my dad is not a big hunter. How do I work on him to gain his trust? I have straight As and have never done anything incredibly disappointing
+Timothy Fautz Hello Timothy, first a few questions, how old are you, do you or your Dad currently own a firearm. You said your Dad is not a big hunter, does he hunt at all, or just isn't sure about it? You can send me a PM on the channel if you'd like to converse that way. Thanks Rook.
+whiterook85 thanks for the reply, my dad and I own many firearms, I'm 13 and have gone hunting with friends, and I have all I need to hunt except an improved choke and slugs, and when I ask him for something he goes "you know what, hunting is a waste of time, it's cold and boring and I won't allow you to do it." I think he's in a good mood now but how do I approach him to let me buy a choke because he's said I don't need one
+Timothy Fautz I would continue to ask in a positive way like you're doing now. Is there any friends of his that you can go deer hunting with so he doesn't have to go. You can tell him that you are seeing if it is something that you want to keep doing, In a few years you will be able to go with your friends so he doesn't have go Cold and boring, yep, sometimes, but it also teaches you a few things along the way.
Never fished your hunt a day in my life but I want to start. As far as hunting goes is it better to start off with small game and work your way up. Any information would be highly appreciated. As well help me determine which rifle I purchase furs
RIfle hunting in this State (CT) requires the wearing of "orange" (hat/Vest). I have a camouflaged backpack, but I'm nervous about the fact that it covers too much of the orange on my back, and I hunt on the ground (not in a blind). Wouldn't it make sense to wear a fanny pack style of carry all for hunting gear, to keep the orange on my back at maximum exposure from those jerks who might mistake me for a deer?
I recommend a pack of the scent free wet wipes. They have them in the hunting section now. Great for wiping your turd cutter also they have a gritty backside which is great for cleaning your hands after gutting a deer 🦌
Some other items I carry: compass (because compass apps suck), spare batteries, headlamp, small folding saw, pruning shears, squeeze bottle of corn starch for checking wind, match case in addition to lighter, spare release or cocking rope in case I drop one.
Camo is a personal choice, a little too hyped in the 'corporate hunting world." If you can't afford the expensive camo outfits I would try and hit your local Army/Navy store if one is close by. The woodland camo pattern is good for early season, go with greys and browns later on. Remember your orange if the State requires it.
Hey this is my second year hunting. But my dad and i didn't have a lot to work with last season. Do you suggest like a black blanket or something dark for deer blinds, also thanks for the advice in the video.
+Logan Komatz Glad the video could help you get started. Over you make adjustments and come up with your own load out. As far as what to wear while on a blind, remember your states game laws. If you have to have your orange on make sure you do. If I it's bow season, dark solid colors are good. I don't use face paint, but i always wear a Turkey hunting face camp net. Something I added in the last couple of years. Easy on and off, and keeps mosquito away in the warm weather. Good luck this year!!
Quite a difference in his pack and my pack. I'm planning on heading heading up the mountain at about 9,500 feet tomorrow after deer, on the 5th day of my water only fast, whereas his pack seems to be all about food and energy. While I have some calories in my pack in case of emergency, it's the least important thing in my pack.
First time watching your vid. 100% sure everyone who watched, all probably had that same though “ reminds me of my dad” im sure all you who watched all your fathers have the same style and vibe as this guy haha
Another good thing to carry is hand sanitizer in the spray containers that they pass out at the bank plot other places sometimes works great for cleaning your hands along with the shammies from the dollar stores
+CPNCFilms Not exactly sure, I think in the $45 to $65 range. Do a search on "browning single blade drop point knife" Don't think they make that model any longer, but there are some that are similar. Great knife, and its been used many, many times.
Good tips for EDC into the woods. This is the first time I have seen your videos and I just do not understand people who are indoors making videos with sunglasses on. (witness protection maybe). I think some people are more interested in the ammo you have stored on the shelves in the background. My tip for bow hunters is always carry an extra release!!!!! Thanks!!
As far as the sunglasses go in the basement, was having trouble with some of my videos coming out looking yellowed out. I increased the amount of light on the table (have outdoor spot lights shining down now). Was a little bright on the old eyes, thus the sunglasses.
One thing I noticed that you missed is a first aid kit. I usually carry a basic kit with extra quick clot and a CAT tourniquet. After all, we are dealing with bows and firearms in the woods and accidents happen.
Really depends on how long you will be out there, what your personal needs are, and how far from your vehicle you are. I think if you can fit what you need in there it's fine. .
The backpack brand is Fieldline, not sure if they still make this model. Purchased it in the late 90's so I've had it for a long time now. Made in USA, must be the reason.
Best Hunting Pack vid of all time!

Thanks Albert, just trying to set some building blocks for some new people just entering the Sport.
Love this video...right before hunting season been watching it every year
I'll be going deer hunting for the first time this year. Your video has helped me so much. Thank you for what you do and keep doing it.
Good luck, I miss last year :( but not this year
Backwoods Hill Billy, you'll have the best experience of your life. Good luck for getting a nice big buck. But hunting is also about the fun of the adventure.

I am a very very green hunter and this was very very helpful!
we have almost the same pack. thanks for shareing!! be safe and good luck!!
+Jay Roper It's a great pack, never even thought of replacing it after all these years. Thanks for watching!
I have watched a lot of videos like this but I have to say that this is the best one of them all. You are very detailed. Great video!

Thanks for sharing that story, hope your great uncle recovered well. Did this a long time ago, but it still holds up.
I would have never thought of bring soap in a bottle. That's great. I like that you've kept the same bag for almost 20 years.
Thanks, seems like it's going on 30 years for that backpack now. Always changing a few things up here and there.
Thank you for this video. I'm researching and preparing for my first hunt and found this extremely useful. Thanks again!
Glad it could help, over time you will find what works for you and change a few things. Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks for checking out the video. Does for a living, me, retired early.....

its awesome
Great idea on the town and gloves.
Shooting in 4K now, so no more glasses inside. Mix and match some of the stuff from the video and you'll find your right combo.
getting ready for first year archery. good video. helped alot in deciding on pack size and what is needed
I just wanted to let you know I found this information extremely helpful last year and I am referencing it this year as well. Thanks.
Thanks for making this vid a lot of good info .a tip on your haul line tie a knot every 12 to the18 inches all the way through the length of the line much easier to pull up your gear and especially lowering good hunting and be safe.
Good video , great attitude ! Thanks for the tips ,I thought the soapy water was smart and the socks on the thermos also smart.
Thanks for the tip I will put a lot of this in my bag thank you so much
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thank you for posting this. I am just getting into hunting and you have some great info in this.
This was great. Want to get into White Tail deer hunting and always wanted to know what to carry. Thanks.
+rpsimons58 Glad to help! Good luck and be safe.
You sure as shit dont need all this stuff.
Great video, certainly got a few ideas from this to add to my deer pack.
Best of luck hunting.
Mark

Thanks, this is a guide. Find what works for you.

Thanks so much!!!
great video, i would have never though of chapstick ducktape and parachute chord, it really helped on my last hunt -thanks
Glad it could help, use it as a guide, add, subtract as needed. Thanks for watching.
“I wear my sunglasses at night...” good video but the glasses were an distraction. Lol

"Mom threw away my best porno mags!"
good video.. i also carry a book to read on day long sits during gun season. a simple first aid kit comes in handy too along with spare cordage. when hunting and scouting some cheap $2 cordage makes impromptu blinds easier to construct.
Great backpack and tips for new deer hunters
+Christina Odom Thanks, that's why I did it, over time you will find the important things that you want to bring along But it's a good starting point.
+whiterook85 hello this is my first time watching you
What's with the Shades ?
The lighting needed for good filming can be very bright
@@jessandchanrmyfam Yeah, that's why news anchors, actors, and people on other youtube channels are all wearing sunglasses. Oh wait.... they're not.
They might help him feel more comfortable in front of the camera.

Adam Sandler told him no one can see him when he wears them

Thank you sir, DelMarVa is certainly an under rated area. but lets keep that between us.

Maybe put a bit of plastic dip on your glove fingers for more grip
they sell awesome gloves at cabellas or probably any other sporting goods stores that would suit you well. they have the grip dots on them.
hey rook man you look like a boss in those shades.
Not sure about a Boss, but there was a legitimate reason for wearing them, it's in the description.
@@whiterook85 oh yeah the lighting boss!!
wonderful exactly what i was looking for , thank you
I recommend a pack of the scent free wet wipes.
Good stuff there James, thanks for adding.
We're did you get the reverse able hat ?
Great tips!
Thank you, Sir.
Thanks should I have any camo cloths
Camo is a personal choice, a little too hyped in the 'corporate hunting world." If you can't afford the expensive camo outfits I would try and hit your local Army/Navy store if one is close by. The woodland camo pattern is good for early season, go with greys and browns later on. Remember your orange if the State requires it.
Thanks
Yes you are very right, this is a closer to civilization all day in the woods pack. Good luck and stay safe.
What's the screw at 6:08 called
I love your commentary at 6:40.
I really want to go deer hunting only hunting I’ve done is boar hunting since they are pests
Find a friend, I'm sure they would gladly take you out.
Do you take field glasses with you, also do you use GPS
First time watching your vid. 100% sure everyone who watched, all probably had that same though “ reminds me of my dad” im sure all you who watched all your fathers have the same style and vibe as this guy haha
Thanks, hope I hit the mark without being too overbearing.
Good Luck!! Be Safe!!
thanks so much, very helpful!
Another good thing to carry is hand sanitizer in the spray containers that they pass out at the bank plot other places sometimes works great for cleaning your hands along with the shammies from the dollar stores
Wow that's a lot more than I normally carry but I hunt mule deer in Texas, I normally have a lot less extra clothes and a lot of water
+Braden Hinders Thanks, just gives you some options. Good luck this year.
how much was that knife that you put in your backpack?
+CPNCFilms Not exactly sure, I think in the $45 to $65 range. Do a search on "browning single blade drop point knife" Don't think they make that model any longer, but there are some that are similar. Great knife, and its been used many, many times.
whiterook85 ok thanks
I've peed off of my tree stand before
And that would be notable, why?
tip #367 pee bottle doubles as a hand warmer for a short time.
lol
Do you think a backpack is better then a fanny pack for deer hunting on a tree stand
Really depends on how long you will be out there, what your personal needs are, and how far from your vehicle you are. I think if you can fit what you need in there it's fine. .
Thank you man this helped a lot
Nice video this helped me a lot
I hope you made it to four......
What is the name/brand of that bag
The backpack brand is Fieldline, not sure if they still make this model. Purchased it in the late 90's so I've had it for a long time now. Made in USA, must be the reason.
Great video thank you very much
Great Video, first time Bow hunter, will help.
this man is a genius
yes he is.
Great video!
