    great coverage on the plants in the pond. those Victorians are sick, but not for me. i cant wait to see how that big project is coming along in Mahomet.
    but i do have a technical question, is it completely necessary to jut the liner off just right after the waters edge?

    Hey Ed what is your favorite out of Aquatic habits....? Plants? Wildlife? It's gotta be the fish , right?

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 5 лет назад +2

      The Fishy Life ! That’s a difficult question for me to answer.....
      Let me explain:
      I’m an Ecologist and this discipline is very different than other specialties in the sciences,
      Icthyologists specialize in Fish
      Ornithologists specialize in birds
      Phycologists specialize in algae, etc.....
      Ecologists study and understand them all, the root word of Ecology is Oikos which means “home”
      Ology is the “Study of”
      Ecology means the “study of the home”
      In other words it’s difficult to specialize in “fish” for example without taking the other surrounding components of the fishes “home” into consideration.
      In order to fully understand the fish you need to understand where it lives(North or South) the water temperature, water chemistry, what level within the water column it prefers(benthic or pelagic) what it eats, what eats it, etc......
      So my answer is the Ecosystem is my favorite part because it connects all of the disciplines together into One......
      Sorry for the long response

    Those lily pads are ridiculous. The only time I've seen those were in amazon documentaries i think. They looked gigantic.

  • @Aiden-yx9ht
    @Aiden-yx9ht 5 лет назад +2

    Are there special planters for lillies because I heard their roots can get big and take over a pond. The old pond I got rid of had a lilly plant in it and took all my power to pry the roots from the bottom. Or do you need to just keep trimming the roots before they get insanely massive? Thanks.

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 5 лет назад

      Dick Schmidt Water lilies can be problematic when the conditions are right.
      We’ll use a combination of strategies to control them.
      Certain species don’t get out of control which is the best method!
      Using planting pots that can be removed on a yearly basis for routine maintenance(trimming and fertilizing) works great but if left unchecked water lilies will eventually outgrow the container and start spreading along the bottom of the pond if there’s enough nutrients/detritus available for them.
      Water lilies are like any other garden perennial and have specific requirements for optimal growth.

    • @Aiden-yx9ht

      @@edbeaulieu5916 Thank you for the informative reply. Do any planting pots suffice, or are there pots that are easier to work with and better for the plant?
      I've bought one water lilly planter pot and it's like a mesh bag, are these any good? I haven't used it yet.

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 5 лет назад

      Dick Schmidt I like the mesh planters because they’re flexible and can sit on uneven surfaces easily.
      Rigid planters that are wide and shallow 8” or less in depth work well and are easy to handle and maintain

    • @Aiden-yx9ht
      @Aiden-yx9ht 5 лет назад

      @@edbeaulieu5916 Thanks right now I'm just using the planters that the plants came with. They aren't very big.
