Big Nightwish fan here and I get what you guys are saying. Toumas said that the mixing of this song was done that way on purpose. Floor was meant to be singing to us as one of our past ancestors among all of our ancestors. I will listen to this again for sure but if and when this is done live I bet it will sound great and Floor will nail it.

I have two problems with that:
      1. If it sounds crap, intention does not make it better.
      2. There is a realistic possibility that there will never be a live concert again, so "it will sound great live" is not worthless to me.

There has been a controversy about Floor vocals mixing. They sound kinda low especially in the chorus but it really depends from people to people or the platform they used to listen to it or the hardware they used. Personnaly I only listened to it on YT with the music video and the single version. I personally think the single's sounds slightly better as there is no MV SFX in it which probably added another layer of sound to an already very busy track. I personally love the song and its video, it just takes time to grow on you. People whined about Noise and especially Harvest where they were released for Human Nature and Elan received quite a lukewarm reception when it was released because it was deemed too soft as a debut for Floor's NW era and now it's a fan favorite during live shows.
I'm not saying Tuomas is above mistakes or criticism but since people will always find something to complain, well...

  • @DeepeningTheListening

Personally, I like the mix, it's more immersive which fits the song.
For everyone who doesn't like the mix: There is a Dolby Atmos version on Apple music now. A lot of people think the mix is better there.

Sorry, but ,i just have a very good sound system, stereo,no surround shit,so ,if i want a "good mix"i need a new sound system? That is a costly mistake of Nightwish if that happens to be true. Crazy suggestion.🤨

Most likely it's the same mix, but it will be easier to pick out Floor's vocals spatially.

To me it is the perfect evolution of the music they are grown in their understanding of rhythm, harmonie and pace and I totally look forward to the album in september which I already preordered immediately. As someone who has written a lot and is proud of his versatility, I can tell you that no matter what you do, someone will love it and another person will hate exactly the same thing about exactly the same book, or piece of music, or sculpture, or whatever. So as a creator, in the end you have to do what pleases you. Which is what Tuomas is doing.
Take it or leave it. Otherwise, Baskin-Robbins would be Two Flavors instead of 31.

And therein lies the problem with music today. The record companies force you into the instant gratification syndrome. People have been trained to accept 3 or 3 1/2 minute half dozen lyric songs. With Nightwish, you need to relax and enjoy the composition.

Enjoyed your reaction! I don't find it controversial at all. Music, like any art, is highly personal and subjective. I agree that Floor's vocals are a little low in the mix and as others have mentioned it was done on purpose. Personally I like the mix and the more I have listened the more I have loved it. It is very catchy and has been playing in my head constantly since I first heard it. Harry is right, this is classic Nightwish. It has everything I love about them. Beautiful instrumentation, thought provoking lyrics and epic storytelling. Love how the instrumentation melody in hte very beginning foreshadows the vocal melodies in the verse. For folks that want to hear a re-mix of the song with Floor's vocals higher in the mix checkout Nightwish Arena's channel. He has a video where he re-mixed her vocals. I haven't listened to it myself so can't' comment on how it sounds. I love the final part with Troy singing. It feels very Auri like. Auri is a side project of Tuomas, Troy, and Johanna Kurkela (Tuomas's wife and poular Finnish folk/pop inger). Auri is folky/atmospheric kind of music. Some of my favorites include The Space Between, Desert Flower, and The Valley.

Personal taste and opinions are part of life. For me, the song could have went on for several more minutes and I would have been happy. I've listened to this piece of musical art several times, maybe 30 or more, and it just keeps getting better and better. I've heard several people say that they didn't particularly like the song the first time they heard it, but the more they heard it the more it grew on them until now they absolutely love it. Floors voice was pulled back in the mix on purpose to make her seem as one of the voices of the ghosts of our ancestors. I would be willing to bet that if she ever does this song in concert that her vocals will be more forward in the mix. Many of the sound effects are for the video and I would be surprised indeed in they were included in any live performance that might take place in the future.

Nightwish dont dissapoint "did you feel the ghost energy song"
I listened to this song many many times by now, and it is one i like to listen to with my headphones or without, its really a good song, when i can do so to me. Some say Floors voice is low in the mix, and i can agree its hard to get all words she sing, but if you look at it soundwise it sounds amazing!! and after a listen or 2, you know most of lyrics, and its no problem at all, its done fully on purpose for the sound experince of it, and like shes part of the ancestor choir.. cant wait for rest of album!!
Yesterwynde is the opening track on new album, i belive its only like a intro, its a little over 2 min long, #2 on album then is a almost 10 min song, thats proberly another epic!! #3 is where i think they bring in a heavy track, and this Perfume of the timeless is #5.. so i think its gonna be a good mix of heavy songs, Epics, and maybe a full balled.. Perfume of the timeless, well its almonst a ghost energy song right, telling all these ancestors is perfume around in a timeless world, being around you still, also a message that your existens matters!! i feel tuomas also put in a little message that mankind could do better still, Einstein turn to ape..
The title of the album is a word made by band member Troy Donockley, which Holopainen describes as the feeling of time, history, memory, and being connected to past generation, who have "all had their lives, their ups and downs, and they don't exist anymore, except as atoms scattered all over the universe. And we're going to be in that state pretty soon as well. So that should give you something to think about."
Holopainen has described the album as being about humanism, history, and the inspiration thereof, and that outlook of the album is positive and optimistic ]
Track listing Yesterwynde: release date 20th September 2024
All tracks are written by Tuomas Holopainen.
    Yesterwynde track listingNo. Title Length

Different strokes for different folks...it's only ONE song off an album...on any album there are going to be some songs that hit an individual and some not so much. I personally loved everything about this one. I thought the mix was just fine, I'm sure it was EXACTLY as Tuomas intended it to be. I've read that he intentionally mixed the vocals on THIS song so that Floor sounded as part of a choir in the chorus. Everyone is getting their panties in a knot about the mix for this song...RELAX, I'm sure the other songs on the album will be different and will appease those that don't like this ONE song.

    Some probability calculations:
Step 1. Probability of boy meeting girl: one in 20,000.
Step 2. Probability of same boy knocking up same girl: one in 2000.
Step 3. Probability of right sperm meeting right egg: one in 400 quadrillion.
Step 4. Now lets assume that you have just those 12 generations of ancestors mentioned in the intro to this song. For the probability of every one of those 12 generations of your ancestors having reproduced successfully with right sperm having met the right egg is 400 quadrillion to the 12th power.
Given these 4 steps, the probability of you being born you at the present moment is 20k x 2k x 400 quadrillion to the 13th power. Going backwards in time with even more generations of your ancestors, we soon reach a probability of 1 divided by the number of atoms in the entire universe. This makes each one of us a unique miracle.
P.S. Most, if not all, of the free diving sections are taken from Guillaume Néry's short film "One Breath Around The World", which you can watch on his YT channel.

The song's message could be conveyed in less than 8 minutes, perhaps even in just 10 seconds, but this music is an artistic interpretation that necessitates the full 8 minutes. Some artists, such as writers and poets, might need an entire book to express the same message, while others might use a meme or disregard the message altogether.

Nice reaction👍,and yes you are right and no, you'r not getting roasted,I like the song and video many people have some criticism about the audio mix.
People say (i think Kai also)that it is /was a poëtic/philosophical choise to blend floor's voice in the music/choirs to make her part of the "ancestors".
For me, the poëtic/philosophical message is already in the lyrics and video and Tuomas (main producer) is a great composer/lyricist but i really have some legit criticism about his producer skils in this song. Some say its "over- produced" for others it's just about vocal volume or vocal clarity. Others say that tuomas intend it this way but, that doesn"t mean that'it's the right way.😉🤘 (hope, one day ,we can see this live,Nightwish, best served live🤘)

There will be no new mix (mastering is wrong term). This is art, and this is how the artist Tuomas and the rest of NW wanted it. It is not an error. If you don’t like it, fine. Tuomas likes it this way. So should he follow your taste and trash his? Yep, I see that coming 😂

The point is, Tuomas makes music as he likes. If someone does not like it then so be it. But that won’t change his mind.
And quite frankly, I don’t even understand what the whole fuss is about. I hear Floor very clearly. With my headphones, with my stereos, in my studio 🤷‍♂️

No it's not. It may have been exactly what he intended (which I'm not disputing), but it's still a god-awful sounding mix to these ears and is definitely NOT perfect! It's an absolute mess. I know it's probably too late now and not likely to happen anyway, but I so wish they'd re-mix it for the actual CD release in September. There have already been several fan made remixes that lift the vocals somewhat (especially on the wonderful chorus) and those versions sound significantly better IMO. Let's be clear, I totally adore this song with a passion - I just hate the mix. Regardless, I will still buy the album without hesitation on release day because I love Nightwish. I suspect the rest of the album will be mixed differently and it's just this one particular song where Tuomas did what he did for the reason that he did it.

This is what unconstrained genius looks and sounds like. Tuomas is a visionary and he does exactly what he pleases and goes wherever his muse takes him. It's on us to keep up and follow along. That he leaves many behind is no surprise. This... this composition is fucking epic. And it's as deep as the Marianas Trench and with more layers than a baklava. You can watch and listen to this 50 times and still be rewarded with new information, new insights.
The owl - avatar of Athena, goddess of wisdom. Floors plunge and deep dive into a blank page an edition of Darwin’s On the Origin of the Species. The cloud of butterflies represents the myriad of the smallest events upon which our existence turns (the butterfly effect). The butterfly was also regarded as an emblem of the soul by the ancient Greeks. Layers and multiple meanings, folks.
Nightwish doesn’t make songs or albums - they publish portfolios of art where the nature of our existence is the subject matter. This, it would seem, has been disappointing to a number of the members of the community. If you’re here for the head bang, then you’re most likely going to be disappointed and you’ll find lesser amusements elsewhere. Tuomas and Nightwish doesn’t need your approval.
Tuomas is an erudite man with a deep love of this world and for this existence. He is a man hungry for comprehension, for understanding and for love. This existence is awesome if you take the time to grasp for understanding. The glittering beauty of mathematics, music as the voice of God, the natural world with its "endless forms most beautiful". It's all there for the beholding. But you have to reach out grasp it, you must have a savage thirst for comprehension as the price of admission.

Hey Guy's, Nice review again, Tuomas Is right up there with some of the greatest Music Composers ever to walk this earth, His mind is just Genius. sometimes, it is above what we all think, and can understand, But in All of his Music, which is much more than just songs, there is always a message, and a meaning in it. He is indeed The Metal Mozart of this genera of Music, and other stuff like the Auri Project he does with his wife Joanna, and Troy. The Video Is Amazing and its meaning, From the Vocal side of things, Tuomas was involved in the Mixing process, and He did not want Floor overpowering the other parts, instruments etc. Rather he wanted Her to blend in with the choir, But not to be above them. This is The 3rd and last Album, that forms part of the trilogy, Of his vision of the World that was, in the creation, and the World that is to come, You always give a good and Honest Review Which I deeply respect you for that. And Now Everyone is just waiting for the rest of the New Album to Drop, as we are led to believe from Kia, it is going to be very Heavy, Huge Drum Parts, Guitar Solo's etc, and of course Floor Jansen in Full Voice. ❤❤

Beethoven sounds great on that hardware or John Lord, so they have to compare with that. Sure, I will look into the CD when it comes out, but if the mix stays as it is, I will not buy it. Sigh... People are going to hate me, the band is going to hate me if they ever see me... but bands need all the feedback, good and bad, and pretending something is 'genius' and blows you away just because you are determined to praise a band no matter what, no matter how badly they stumble, which I think I'm seeing a lot of with this band right now is something I'm just not wired for. By the time they've struggled, tweaked, compromised, not compromised, anguished, missed sleep, worried, celebrated, done and redone this and that and all that goes into these projects they can really lose perspective, and I love and respect them as people and artists. It's not just the mix. These guys have millions of dollars. They are rich enough to hire the world's best orchestras and the sound quality, entirely apart from the mix, at times is so bad it's as if something went seriously wrong, I mean it's almost unlistenable to me, and that's only two of at least 6 slams I could give it, but I don't have the heart. I'm astonished they would choose this as the first release. In my opinion it is flawed in multiple ways, some of them pretty deep and unfixable. Really hoping the rest of the album doesn't strike me as such a mess, and if it turns out that there really was something wrong with the process or equipment that they get it sorted out before it's too late. Be well, everyone.

My opinion is sure to be unpopular with many people but, IMO, the original music during the Floor era is not as good as the music prior to Floor. NOT a reflection on Floor at all, who’s ability, and contributions, are first-rate. It’s just an easy way to differentiate the eras of the band.
Tuomas is a brilliant composer but I think he’s missing the mark more than he used to. To be fair, it’s hard to consistently produce excellent epic compositions over and over again. You can look at the catalogs of countless progressive bands to see proof of that. Just my opinion, but I think you have to go back to Dark Passion Play & Imaginaerum to find the very peak of his brilliance.
