Beautiful . The only thing I would recommend for an aging in place shower would be the slider rod / pole that the hand shower head can be attached to. Having cared for my mother for 5 years who was blind , we found that being able to have the hand held in the exact place she always needed it to be very helpful . thank you

i have been loving your tile videos! i was searching tile and grouting videos to learn how to tile a little cinder block project i have going and out of all the different channels i came across on the topic yours has been by far the best. Now what do i consider the best? Well first off the other videos were shorter and had so much talking about unhelpful information. I happily watch your longer videos (2x to 4x average) and surprisingly it is jam packed with information every step of the way. Very direct and to the point. You embody that old school work-ethic of "if it is worth doing, it is worth doing right" or "Measure twice, cut once" that is so missed and needed in today's age. You get my subscribe and i am going to dig through your archives and make a binge list on my WatchLater. Thanks for the awesome tutorials.

I have been looking for exactly what you have covered in the video. I do have a question on how you finished the small space (from the floor to the height of the tub) between the tub and the vertical edge of the old tile. Above the tub you placed a trim instead of a bullnose and that is very clear. It will be very helpful if you could please provide a description. Thank you!👍

It looks great, but though your heart was certainly in the right place and it looked great, you didn't listen to what the two women needed or wanted in their bathroom.
At the start, you stated that they said they had difficulty getting into the bathtub and needed help. Many elderly people or a person with mobility issues would find it difficult to impossible to step over that bathtub to take a shower or get in and out of a bathtub that size. The one grab bar would provide some stability but it was so far from the water source it would not provide adequate stability while in the shower. The towel bar in the enclosure is not designed to be a grab bar and could be a hazard as it is not designed to hold the weight a grab bar is.
Too often contractors don't take into account that some of their customers are up to a foot shorter than they are or have special needs.
Surprises are nice, but understanding what the mother and grandmother needed in a caregiving situation would have made this far more functional for them. Most older or disabled people opt for a walk-in shower. I immediately thought that was what this project would be and was shocked that at no time was the main need of the occupants addressed.
The average home showers and bathtubs are sized for the average male. A contractor or your viewers, who from the comments here seem to be mostly men will think "job well done". But you missed the entire point of the rehab, to make the bathroom accessible for the two women.
What may be just a small step into the shower for you but that bathtub is a major obstacle for an elderly person. It could mean the difference between a person being able to maintain their independence and shower without assistance or having to ask for help. Something as simple as being able to shower alone can have a huge impact on a person's self-esteem and goes way beyond that great color scheme and "wow factor" or the geometric tile design.
I know you can say how pleased the mother was when she saw it. I don't know her, but she didn't genuinely look pleased to me, she looked like she was trying to act pleased for her son.
Please don't take this wrong, you and her son wanted to do something special for his mother and provide a popular and educational video for your viewers. I went through severe disability in my life and am fortunate enough to be able to walk and have a "normal" life. now so I have seen for myself how the needs of disabled people and an older population are too often ignored, even when they say what their needs are as these women did. I now work with people with disabilities and special needs. I would be amiss if I didn't point this out to you and your viewers here, surprises like this are well-meaning but wasted if it doesn't meet the needs of the user, which can be very different from what your needs are. It does look great though, and I am inspired by your videos.

    • @janemorris3692

My thoughts as well. As a caregiver I see how abilities change over time. It is the simple things in life that we all take for granted that change as we age or experience an illness. Bathing can be a wonderful escape or a scary dangerous experience. The grab bar is a great addition. Interviewing the family to determine specific needs would have been insightful and in the end greatly appreciated with every shower. The surprise could still be enjoyed in the execution of the amazing design elements. I do love Jeff's teamwork and willingness to help all!

Bit confused by this video as I watched it right after I watched video where you installed the original. After only a few years the bottom row of tiles is discolored already? I'm glad I'm doing a stand alone claw foot tub and don't have to worry as much about water getting behind tiles but confused about if I should do what you did in last video with just regular drywall and that orange membrane??

  • @tinman1955
    @tinman1955 3 года назад +1

Beautiful work...but I'm puzzled. You started off saying that that the existing shower is 3 years old and functioning well. A minute later you said water is penetrating the grout and collecting behind the tile - which does not sound like proper functioning to me. And your fix is another layer of tile. So what's the takeaway? Are you implying that two layers of tile are required for a water tight install? What was the root cause of the water leak? Was the existing tile installed or grouted incorrectly or not sealed?

hi there, very good job! You have no idea how much you help us! thank you. I have a couple of questions and I don't know if you will be able to take the time to help me! I just bought a 1983 house and my master bathroom has an ugly and dated style on the shower floor! it is downgraded like 12 in from the bathroom floor with two steps which are really dangerous! I want to transform this bathroom into a walking shower but in order to do that I know, I will have to raise the shower floor to even with the rest of the bathroom floor! knowing that I will have to modify my drain up to the new level and raise the shower too, I don't have a really major problem in replacing the plumbing and installing new drywall! It is half wall tiled and I will be replacing and taking it to the ceiling !! MY BIGGEST PROBLEM IS: I have no idea how to raise 12 in. up my shower floor !!! The floor has tiles that I don't know how was installed and I'm guessing I will have to remove it until I reach the plywood and start from the bottom but I'm been honest, I don't have an idea how to do that!! I don't understand why people did that and if is there any reason for it! I'm wondering too if I will have any problem with my draining system if I change it! Anyways I appreciate your videos and if you get a chance to reply I will be glad! In case you want I have a Picture I can send you! I have no experience working with concrete whatsoever !! thank you so much!!

@@REALITYRENOVISION what store is that? I live close to Montréal and I was wondering if I could find one like that (or the same) around the area here. Thanks :) Gorgeous shower!

We don't know the age of the tile in our master, but the grout has started to come out and we have major molding in the caulk at the tub. After watching your initial video, I'm now worried that we will need to pull all the tile down because there may be mold. I was hoping to just regrout it, but I'm not sure now.😬

Hi there, so were there issues with the original upgrade that led to the water pooling? What changes should we make from the original video?

try to leave a little grout in the corners without silicone to let it weep. Cheers!

@@REALITYRENOVISION would it be a reasonable decision to omit the silicone at the tub/tile transition and simply leave a high quality grout? Perhaps “mapei ultracolor plus fa”?

Do you have to cut the tile at the side ? Could you just put new tile edge on top?

Just tiled two bedrooms at the same time yesterday. Wish I watched this video first, the soap while grouting tip would've came in handy. I hate grouting. Good to know for next time though.

Really enjoy your vids and I do almost exactly the same in all aspects of tiling. That back wall bro? Yeah Nope! I design many showers and I also turn my clients to a cleaner, linear look.

Why build tile on tile instead of replacing old with new tile? To save money?

Videos like show why there are so many bad contractors out there. Never install tile over tile.

Is there a video that shows what to do if some of the tiles have detached from the wall - there's a hollow sound when you knock on them.

I like the bath tub and toilet bowl separated wiyh a partition. Do we need a glass for tub?? I i would prefer a translucent glass door for the toilet bowl and standing shower area. I personally prefer a bath tub to be open without any glasses or plastic curtains.

      1) Water typically doesn't get that high anyway and the little that does is just a little bit of splashing. 2) You can just run a bead of calking or silicone around the top edge if you are concerned.

Is the shower door supposed to be open at the end like that? I would think water would get everywhere. 🤷‍♀️
