    A few months ago we’ve replaced our H6Ds with X2Ds and some new lenses. So far, we’ve been very impressed and the recent firmware update actually solved all issues we kinda had, although none was severe. The GFX100(S) couldn’t persuede us to switch, but this camera certainly did. Next to the color science, the leaf shutter with flash sync up to 1/4000th and the incredible handling of the camera are the biggest upsides. We use the cameras for fashion and beauty photography in our Zurich studio and we’re always impressed by how easy the Hasselblad raw files are to work with. For personal (less critical) outdoor work I still prefer the M and the SL2-S, but when the studio lights go on, this is the tool we use!

      Thanks for the comment. Yes I’m interested to dive deeper into studio work with it for the next video perhaps. Hopefully the 90mm will come sooner than later and can try that lens in that setting.
      Yes I agree with your findings on the raw files are to work with. So much latitude in them.
      Yes I like the M and SL2-S as well. Great camera systems and a joy to use.

    Thank you for this excellent intro of the X2D system, Bobby! As a Nikon Z System landscape, product and macro photographer, I have been quite satisfied with the image sharpness and detail I obtain from the Nikon Z System (Z7, Z8 and several lenses). However, as I do on occasion produce very large prints *30"x40" and up), I've always had an interest in medium format. So, in your opinion, do you feel that the X2D with, say, the Hasselblad 120/3.5 XCD Macro lens would give me a very substantial improvement in image quality (particularly image sharpness and detail rendition) in the large prints, over either the Fuji or my Nikon Z System? (Also, as I don’t shoot video, that’s another reason the X2D appeals to me, as well as the NCS of the Hasselblad files, since I’m somewhat colorblind, and it sounds like color-correcting the Fuji files would be a nightmare for me in particular!) Thank you sir!

    I am having that exact issue with the X1DII since -- Missing shots due to blackout time on the EVF. It's the only reason I tend to pick my H6D more. Never expected any Hassy to be quick but the blackout is a bummer. The files on the other hand though...makes it a keeper.

    Hi great review, but i think surely even with the internal SSD, you would want a backup card. I am guessing 1TB SSD and their mic, was initially for video functionality then they found it would delay their product, or some other technical issue such as heat generated during recording. Who shoots 1TB of photos without downloading their RAWs at the end of each day? There also appears to be an issue with the camera strap attachment to the body, a few users said their H strap has come off almost resulting in a dropped camera! Face and eye detect is missing, which is very useful for portraits or fashion/model shoots, will increase the hit rate. The joystick as you mentioned is a biggie for product photographers, especially if you change from landscape to portrait orientation a lot and need to zoom in. I currently use the GFX100s for commercial would consider a X3D maybe, or after another firmware iteration on the X2D :) Should be mentioned GFX100s does a wider system of lenses and many more zooms. This camera I believe is for specific photographers who have time to shoot, this to me isn't yet a fully developed commercial use camera. I remember seeing Karl Taylor video on the X2D saying how great this camera was, yet in the following months he showed a video using a Sony A7 for a product shoot :)

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching. I don’t think video was ever considered to be honest. Internal drive allows faster read and write speeds and also enough storage to take on 1000 frames for focus stacking for example. Not everyone transfers their images daily, especially if you are out in locations where you don’t have the means to transfer. Also is that a mic, or perhaps a speaker?
      In addition no headphone Jack, no mic Jack and no HDMI.
      As for the straps I agree not a fan of the lug design as it’s somewhat proprietary but when secured correctly I I don’t see how they will pop off.
      AF definitely needs improvement and agree with this.
      Many photographers will use different cameras depending on the type of shoot they are doing. Karl Taylor will use the right tool for the right project. Even if he is a Hasselblad ambassador, he knows like all of us that one camera can’t do everything.

  • @RobertFalconer1967
    @RobertFalconer1967 Год назад +4

    Hasselblad really ticked most of the boxes with this one. The combination of a terabyte of internal memory *with* a CFExpress type B slot alone is incredibly appealing. Not a sports/action/wildlife cam, but it could be a one camera solution for social documentary, travel, and landscape work, especially with distance and DOF scales on the new lenses (well done, Hasselblad).
    Might make some rethink an M11 purchase.

      I don't think so, the m11 is more for street photography and imo this camera is just too slow for those moments. Loving the in built storage which I hope more high end cameras do in the future... the real dealbreaker for me though is that the camera doesnt even have focus peaking for manual focusing. Seems like an oversight for a camera in 2023.

  • @andyvan5692

    one point,with video, the H6D does video, but from most youtuber revews it is a bit grainy, as it is in effect a fast 'burst' mode, at 24 shots a second!; another point, the H6D is 6x4.5 in size, the X1/1ii/2D is only 66x44 cm in size (sensor area), approx. so is smaller than the H system offerings, or the Film counterpart.

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  Год назад +2

      I think it’s worth more than 300, especially being internal. The camera also has a CF Express type B card slot so you can choose. The options are what makes this enticing for storage. Very interesting - thanks for your impressions (particularly up against the GFX100S) and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. It’s such a beautiful camera that I’m really tempted to sell all my GFX stuff, but so many nagging doubts…most related to Hasselblad being such a small company and their ability to nail the software/firmware. I heard that this model doesn’t yet even have the different aspect ratios to shoot in?! Considering this was available in the X1D and there’s more ability to crop with 100mp, and the fact that Hasselblad even makes an adapter for XPan lenses etc., this is inexplicable! As you say, a joystick for focus selection would add so much usability - a neat little thing like on the SL2 surely would still look great? But, that incredible industrial design is so tempting!!

      Both systems have their pros and cons and by the time im done with this series will be pretty in depth especially when we get to lenses etc.

Also, Phocus mobile is not supporting their own camera on iOS at this point in time. There is no repair station in Europe… and there is more as you mentioned. So I did order for the design, ergonomics and viewfinder. However, I could have been happily shooting my GFX next to my X system for over a month now and at a 40% discount roughly speaking compared to the Hasselblad. Gotta say its been a pleasure to use, has a few kinks here and there but as it being rather new can be forgiven. Quite curious, what major issues do you see in the x2d? I find that the images can warp if u suddenly move even though i put the shutter at 1/2000, it also tends to warp if i move from a shot to shot.

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching. For me the issues are probably new vs old lens which will change a persons experience. The new ones are designed to take advantage of the X2D’s AF vs the older ones.
      AFS is okay but no AFC. Part of the benefit of phase detect is accurate continuous auto focus. Take that out then what’s really the benefit?
      Warping is prob due to the electronic shutter kicking in which isn’t as fast as full frame. Cameras like this are designed for more slow methodical photography.

      Yeah the slower shutter has always been an issue for the X series being a leaf shutter vs the mechanical one in the GFX systems. In some ways it does limit the usability of the camera with faster moving subjects.

    We went from H6D 100c to X2D one 35-70 lens versus seven primes/zooms - yes the files (= quality/detail) from the X2d are nowhere near to that of the H6 - not even close - however so many other benefits - IPad connection, tethering has more functionality, smaller, lighter, easier, quicker, I can see all the screens outside. To mention the 1TB internal drive as a big plus is not really a thing, as a 1TB flash card for our old GFX's were just a couple of hundred pounds each and we had 4 of them. Full frame H6 can only be beaten by Phase One Q4 150mpx but too big for us - we wanted smaller more portable. In conclusion the GFX is great but far too fiddly and most of it unnecessary, and let's be honest you can add the snazzy picture profiles in post on any system. The Hass has one job and it does it brilliantly. Taking perfect colours with more detail than you will ever ever ever really need.

    Do you want to change your car if the seat goes bad?
    That is the risk you are running with built in SD card. No there can never be any speed difference based on internal / external only - that is based in i/o speeds (pcie / usb etc - I know I defined one of them 🙂) - the internal one are "designed" to be faster - the external one can easily be that way too - but they need to do an overall upgrade of the i/o speeds - gets the overall price up for few users who want that write speed. ALL flash have limited number of writes - in earlier days it used to be singled digits. These days it is few 100 thousands. Yes - that's a lot but it will die some day. And your $20k camera is dead because a "few $" part inside of it is dead. And the higher energy consumption + heat is build in for all - whether they want the speed or not.
    It is a high end luxury goods thing - not something of high functional value. Notice these days the fruit company also solders memory / storage on its boards - so one cannot upgrade. Useful when the useful life is much lower than the shelf life. 99% of people will be just fine with 5 year old system though.
    These cameras would need high shelf life. Few average pros will want it - so hard to recover costs. One does not buy a ferrari for uber rides :-) The good prosumer - this makes little sense. Useful for the "dentist who buys it to just show off"!

      Valid points and the long term care of this system will be interesting to see.
      While internal like you said is designed to be faster, I don’t think we have an external option that can reach these speeds yet, and if so, the price point would probably be at a very high premium. I think a few hundred thousand on a camera like this will take a
      photographers a long time vs for example a sports camera that shoots 20 to 30 fps.
      With that said yes it comes down to repairability which I guess we will only know in the future.

    • @amaitra
      @amaitra Год назад +1

      @@btonelli we don't have an external option because the price point will go higher! There are no technological barriers. It is like the difference between USB mouse and the build in USB mouse - you can easily choose to have the external one be higher speed version with better responsiveness. Will just cost more.
      Note, it is not just cost, is is heat dissipation, EMI (radiation) etc. The open connector (for external one) "leaks" but they do not need to have the card one added for that "FCC certification".
      It is the same thing with internal and external solid state drives - fundamentally restricted by the i/o say usb vs vs sata etc.
      The camera makers clearly see this speed matter as an special option - most will not want it.
      Long term, I will say, the same should be just leans and sensor - the managing the camera will be a smart phone app. No need to pay for the clumsy screen / poor UI when you can have a smart phone app that can do all that better.

    Hasselblad X2D has two major flaws. One can be tolerated, and the other one is unacceptable. The tolerated flaw (or maybe we should call it weakness) is the lack of a vertical grip. For a professional shooter, from commercial to editorial, the vertical use is a prevalent format. One might say, "I can bear with it, or I can live without it".
    The major flaw is the lack of a focusing stick-which is a standard in all cameras for a tested and undeniably included reason. It's no-brainer that all camera manufacturers accept and use it a standard navigation tool. What the Hasselblad designers were thinking, for Heaven's sake? Minimalist aesthetic over function? Should one stick his finger between the camera and his face to select a focus point? Such a blunder -which practically renders this camera one of the worst Hasselblad designs, in terms of usability. I am not questioning the superb image quality or so, I am talking the practical usage of this camera as a professional (and owner of two Hasselblad system gear). What a disappointment !

    You DO NOT need a joystick just use the LCD and it is SIMPLE -- this is a case where the reviewer clearly does not use this camera often AND it is intuitive when you do. NO more wheels needed, no more trying to make the X2D a GFX. NO to a joystick. NO to video. If I wanted a GFX I would have bought one. I don't I bought an X2D to replace/update my X1D-ii. Hi Andy. I never said the camera has continuous AF as well or the other X series cameras. I brought this point up because usually PDAF systems benefit from AF-C.

    Most photographers will do what is best for their business by spending the least money for the best equipment. Keeping that in mind, Fuji wins hands down.
    People who spend money for Hasselblad would seem to have no concern for being the least bit frugal, which to some extent is surely required of every business.
    Let's look at is this way: Fuji is actually the best seller of all medium format digital cameras (not a whole lot to choose from), and is also the best seller among the DX format cameras. Fuji has no full frame cameras because Nikon and Canon have that market pretty much wrapped up for themselves. Fuji gives you a hell of a lot of camera for not a hell of a lot of money. Who could possibly complain about that?

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  Год назад +1

      I agree with your statement on this. Plus they have a better support system. Hasselblad and Leica have a different market approach. While both can be used for work and are so by a number of photographers, they also cater towards a luxury market. When cost comes into play many photographers will look for the more budget friendly options.
      However there is another segment to professional photography that is a step above this. Photographers with larger accounts that demand the best in image quality. This is where Phase One lives and Hasselbad. Some will just rent the cameras as and when they need them, but the X2D is trying to bridge that gap with this series of camera (more versatile with color accuracy with pro features at a more budget friendly price).
      Fujifilm cameras can also be used in this way, but one can argue there is a definite difference in color reproduction and other features that Fujifilm isn’t catering towards like Hasselbad and Phase One.
      Going back to budget for a min. Yes the Fujifilm is a few thousand less on average, but what is the X2D offering now?
      1TB internal storage with CF Express type A which are two options that are more robust for storage.
      2. Smaller package. X2D with some of the newer lenses is lighter and more compact than the 100S counterparts.
      3. Better focus stacking software internally. A big attribute for a number of pros
      4. Consistency in optics across the lens range. Fujifilm has some stellar lenses, but others are not on par with one another. Also their lenses are quite big considering
      5. X2D has better IBIS than the GFX100S currently.
      6. Ergonomics goes to X2D.
      7. Leaf shutter for the X2D. For photographers that rely on flash this is a big plus.
      What Fujifilm has going for it is a camera that acts like full frame systems but is medium format which gives more versatility.
      Video, mechanical shutter, faster AF to name a few.

      In the final analysis, all things considered, my own personal belief is that even if a Phase One and the best Fuji were priced identically, I would nevertheless STILL choose a Fuji. I don't know how much a Phase One costs. But the best of the Hasselblads cost something like FIVE times as much as a Fuji. Hasselblad uses Zeiss lenses - fabulous. But it's not as if Fuji lenses are "bad."
