    Yes, I could have adjusted these effects more to make them all sound better. I was very new to this at the time. It is what it is, and I am only one man in his basement. Thx for watching.

    Great video for guys like me- guitar player for years, getting into recording and mixing. I have a plethora of pedals, but not much outboard gear. Plug ins are cool, sure. But using pedals I know inside and out to effect recorded sources is where it's at. Most important detail of this video is the reamp box you are using. Makes things much easier for I/o connectivity. Thanks for the video!

    I Can't Wait Much Longer by Robin Trower (1973) features drums with a slow phaser effect.
    I haven't really heard anything like that since, it sounds so unbelievably good.

      I've been using a slow vibrato effect on my electronic/sample drums which softens them beautifully.

    I think you can make each work.
    1. Distortion, chorus etc. on kick and snare add more punch, kinda like the voidz albums.
    2.Flanger, phaser, tremolo(fast), ring mod etc on cymbals add character as these already have some tonality. It sounds spacey electronic and psychedelic.
    3. Fuzz on toms. No particular reason, just for the lack of better options.
    (also, liked and subbed)

    I can appreciate that only a couple of pedals are of any use to a drummer, but I could see a lot of possibilities with a delay pedal--although setting the tempo might be a challenge.

    • @bobloblaw01
      @bobloblaw01  4 года назад

      Actually, with a tap tempo on the delay pedal it's easy. The tough part is staying in time with the delay - it's like a weird metronome situation that you can easily rush or drag through.

      Thx so much. You can do either - use one dedicated mic as your effects channel, or what I do (which may not be right!) which is to send all my mics to one AUX channel that goes out to the effects. If you haven't already, check out my first video that explains my set up. It's long and boring, but might help.

    A couple thoughts:
    Most pedals will work best affecting a single piece of kit, e.g. what sounds good on cymbals might make the kick drum garbage.
    The reason why tremolo sucked for you is that you are playing acoustic drums. The natural human dynamics and groove of your playing already does enough to vary the hits and makes it interesting. Very subtle tremolo tempo-synced to a quantized, constant-velocity drum machine will help to humanize them a bit. Otherwise yeah I agree, it kind of gets in the way of the beat.
    Ring modulation often sucks, but here's why: what ring mod does is take a main input signal and a secondary carrier signal, and outputs BOTH the sum and difference of the two frequencies. Run of the mill ring mods typically provide an internal sine wave for the carrier which you have to dial in by hand. Say, 440 Hz. It then does its thing using that plus the player's instrument. It'll usually only sound good where the two frequencies that are output are harmonic in nature. Otherwise it's some robotic bell grindy glitchy thing that sounds abrasive. I only know of one pedal that let's you provide both signals: the MF-102. It sounds pretty great using a kick drum and a bass. Kind of robotic distortion that has a lot of gravitas.
    Distortion and fuzz both sound quite nice on whole kits for sure though.
    I look forward to more videos, I found them quite enjoyable!

      Great input! Thanks for sharing that knowledge - really helps me understand what's going on. More videos are on the way in a month or so. (just had a baby so can't really be blasting away on the kit right now). And you're so right about how different effects work for different instruments on the kit. I bought a VFE Klein Bottle to experiment with this - it has three channels that you can assign to different frequency bands with their own effects loops. This way you can put fuzz on the kick frequency, delay on the snare frequency, and reverb on the cymbal frequency (for example). That's something I'll do a video on once I figure out if it helps or hinders the kit sound. Could be cool. Could be weird. Not sure. But thx for watching!

      Ring mod through a drum machine is amazing. Especially if you can take the input volume and use it as an envelope follower on something like the frequency of the carrier, or another parameter.

    pretty sure theres tremolo on one of the dj shadow endtroducing drum tracks that sound amazing but so does the whole record... you cant mess with genius. cant think of anywhere else ive heard it done and i havent listened to that album for a year or two so dont quote me on the effect.. it might be a gnarly chorus... anyway yeh i feel like phase, chorus and flange on drums is all about either effecting in parallel or lowering the wet amount, and also too much "feedback" just gives it too much plastic sci fi kinda alien sound that's too destructive to the fundamental aspects of the drum that we all like and want to hear. just my thoughts having done this quite a bit over the years also. ok now im gonna watch all your other videos cuz i think guitar pedals sound better on drums than guitars

    • @bobloblaw01
      @bobloblaw01  2 года назад

      Hey, yeah. If I could do this video again, I'd lower the wet amount and change up the speeds to find a sweet spot for certain effects. But I was so young, so impetuous. I lived for the moment. And made videos without thinking anyone would ever watch them. About guitar pedals sounding better on drums; this has been my refrain for years now. Yet no pedal builder I've talked to sees the potential in building pedals with drummers in mind. Let's prove them all wrong, shall we?

      @@JISMusicYT I like the Touchmix 16 - lots of in and outs, control, onboard effects, etc. Get a used one since they've been around for a while. But really, any mixer is fine. As long as you have enough channels for your mics plus another channel for the effects loop. Get a used 12 channel whatever and save some $$. You'll blow way more cash on pedals once the addiction hits. I wouldn't worry about pristine sound quality since you're going to be mangling your drum sounds anyway!

    Try Melda Audio.s frequency shifter (VST Plugin) Its awesome. I been recording drums, then rerecording with that effect. They have a very useful comb filter too.
    I think recording drums is like art styles, theres a photo realist style that tries to recapture and recreate the sounds absolutely as faithfully as possible, then theres the abstract expressionist that goes totally for whatever sound comes up with no preconceived idea of"quality"
    Have you tried the Sonuus Wahoo?I use it sometimes with a frame drum. Akai headrush works good with theframe drum too

      Hey there! Thanks for the suggestions. They'll be helpful to others that see your comment. As for me, I spend all day (and night) working on a computer. So when I get a chance to play drums, I want the immediate tactile sensation that pedal effects offer. No screens. Just knobs and switches and drums and cymbals. But I'm definitely in the minority here, with everyone editing their drums in a DAW. Thanks again for sharing these great ideas for sonic exploration!

      @@bobloblaw01 I have grown to like electronic sound more and more, after loathing the 4 on the floor elctronic disco/house/techno stuff for years. Theres something magical that happens when a signal chain is "in tune" and it begins to act organically almost in the way an acoustic instrument responds to your touch and dynamics
