Citroen Ami | Range Test & Review!

  • Is the Citroen Ami only for cities? Well, we probably know the answer already, but we still decided to test it out on a 60km journey home! Will it make it on a single charge, or will we have to use the extension cable we brought with us?
    The Citroen Ami has a 5.5kWh battery. This gives a WLTP range of 75km (46 miles), but that can be quite optimistic. It has an 8 horsepower electric motor and a top speed of 45km/h (28mph).
    Huge thanks to the team in DC EV that loaned this Ami to us for a few days to film. They currently have the Ami to rent for €395 per month, which includes tax and insurance! I think that's whopper value considering the smile this will put on your face!

    All of the reviews I have seen so far for this vehicle are in the wrong environment and wrong utilization that this "car" is made for. This quadricycle is for Urban use, it's made to "live" inside densely populated cities, with heavy traffic and narrow streets, where street parking is the norm (and difficult to find). I live in Central Athens, Greece, which is having all these problems and somebody in my neighborhood is using a Citroën Ami as his main commute vehicle inside the city which, he told me, is well over 90% of his yearly traveled kilometers. When he wants to travel outside of the city he's using his family car a normal petrol one. I asked him if he regretted buying it and said Absolutely no ! He and his wife used to have 2 "normal" petrol cars, now his wife is using daily the family car, he is mostly using the Ami going to work and daily chores... with minimal cost and much much less Hussle as he can find a place to park easily.

      How else was I supposed to get it back to my house? Put it in my pocket and take it on the train? And I have recorded another video which is based in the town that I live in, where I talk about it as an amazing city run-around. This video was a bit of fun to see how it got on with the journey home. Either way...this is built for whatever the owner of it wants to do with it...within legal limits of course! Thanks for the comment and hope you enjoyed the video anyway!

    Really enjoyed this review, probably the first one that includes a fast food stopover! The car itself is so unique and it looks like it’s fun to nip around in. Your range test, as you say, isn’t really realistic to this type of EV but it shows that it can be done. I hope it didn’t take too long for your posterior to recover!

    • @Romiman1
      @Romiman1 4 месяца назад +1

      Not seriously. Also a problem, to convert the power correctly, (Ami needs 230V to charge).
      But to empower and refresh the 12V battery (which also drains the high voltage battery), it could make sense.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 3 месяца назад +1

      The Squad Solar is exactly that - however it's not going to let you drive all day without using chargers. What it will do is get you enough range during a day to either commute to work (if you are rational and live near work) or have enough power to get to a charger. There's no way that solar panels will fully charge even a quadricycle within a day - possibly not ever, but definitely not in any predictable future as the panel would need to be many times more efficient than they are now. If there were a technology on the horizon that might do that, we'd all know about it.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 3 месяца назад +1

      To clarify, the Squad Solar is better than the Ami which is one of the worst quadricycle designs to date, as you'd expect from Citroen. It does popularise the concept though and hopefully other companies vehicles will be more successful and actually produced in quantity one day. I didn't mean to imply by 'exactly that' that the Squad Solar isn't wildly superior to the Ami. Although the Silence 04 has obvious advantages over both.

  • @smoothsilk47
    @smoothsilk47 22 дня назад +1

    I know the reasons for the AMI being limited in max speed, ( so students & youngsters can drive it without a licence ) but can't see why for us qualified drivers it can't be increased so we don't hold up traffic. seems crazy, I'd buy one tomorrow!

    i have the opel rocks e it is the opel variant of the ami. you can reach up to 90km. i managed to drive 85km at once with 10km of range left, multiple times. i was driving fom fulda to saabrücken and stoped for charging only 3 times, i drove 310km for this distance and needed 17h in total for this distance. It was a rainy day with a temperature of 16°C Interesting is if the batteries are warm the charging is at the beginning a bit slower but because you charge so slow anyway the battery is cooling down, so it showed me 3h and 50min charge time but needed in the end only 3h and 10min. '
    also a qiuck technical note, it is 6kwh battery but 5.4kwh are usable. but even then you use only the portion of 100% to 20% capacity because you get usally a low charge warning at 25%(11km) and now you search for a opportunity to charge at 10% the car shows now 0km range and goes to turtle mode and at 0% it shuts off completely to prevent further potential battery damage. all this is only in the range of the usable 5.4kwh so the actual battery state of charge is more or less 10% to 15% or less depending on the state of health of your battery. if it would be actual 0% you would damaging your battery. i hope the battery will last for 10 to 15 years at least. Because a replacement battery does actual not exist on the market and may will never exist.
    all in all, parts for this vehicle are actual for the most part not available, even common consumable parts are not available or bad labeled so you are forced to by the "original part" even it is a standard part of a peugeot 206 like the rims and braking system.

    A vehicle that can only do 30mph should not be allowed on any roads that have a speed limit above 30, so dangerous.

    • @evplatform

      The idea is in the terminology...its a speed limit, not a speed target. There's nothing dangerous about a 450kg vehicle doing 28mph...maybe you're referring to some drivers that can't take proper precaution. But having said that...the lines do start to blur on roads that have 60, 70mph limits. For example, it would be a bad idea to put this on full motorways.
