Dear Diane , It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. I really enjoy the many beautiful pictures you share with us and the valuable tips you give. I have been watching you for years now and never tire of looking at your pictures. I am also always very happy about the little insights you give us into your surroundings. This includes the background noises and your animals that visit you in your studio and talk to you. In this video here I also discovered the "lost" dog. It is nice to know that he has found such a good home among all the other animals and of course with you. Thank you so much for all this! And all the best for you and for Tamsin. And the animals, of course.
I couldn’t agree more, but we are at the mercy of various other factors, which have forced me to put a video for Christmas up in September! Never mind, it will be there when you’re ready for it!
Loved the idea of using a designated sketch pad for Holidays! Wrote the colors down and will put them on the first page. Looking foreword to more Holiday Ideas from you! Thanks for teaching me, Karen Dirmish , who learns so much from you!
Aw lovely puss-cat Oriel! 🐱 Nice n chatty like our Rosemarie!! Really nice Holly there, Diane. Love that you change the green for almost every leaf which makes for a very beautiful picture. Think I might do a few home made/painted cards this year. I do them for Easter so why not Christmas too!! Thank you for this fab tutorial n chat. Love Mel xx 🍰🌻
Hi Mel, and thanks so much for your lovely comment! Oriel gives you a meow meow! I wanted to show how you can mix so many different colours of green using just a few basics! Hope you enjoy giving it a try and practising your mixing! All the best, love, Diane.
I love the idea of starting with colour then finishing with black pen and then the other way round. This is such an interest and varied way of working. Brilliant. Thank you Diane.
Wow! More dense than I've seen. Nebraska, here, we don't grow it. In my childhood, we decorated the chalkboard on Christmas, the night we did our Christmas play. Holly was a favorite.
Very timely for me - I’ve been practising drawing overlapping leaves at different angles and I need to get better at mixing and varying greens. Thanks, Diane - something to do to accompany my afternoon tea.
Hi Cathy, that’s brilliant! So glad you’re going to find it useful. I know it’s a bit early for Christmas and apologise for that, but these things aren’t always easy to do the way we really want to! Have fun with them!
@DianeAntoneStudio No apologies needed - I'm all for making an early start, as I have to practise before I'm ready to go public with my efforts and I have to allow for postal delivery time to family in South Africa.
Diane, it’s such a pleasure to watch your videos. I love your easy & beautiful ways in painting watercolors, and even to hear you speak and listen to your fun-tell tales. You are such a natural. God bless you and keep you well. Merry Christmas, with all my heart. Love, you ❤ Carmela from California USA
Thank you Diane! It has suddenly turned much cooler here in Colorado, a reminder that indeed, Christmas will be here before we know it! I wonder why time seems to speed up as we get older… I can’t say that I like it because I don’t get as much done! You still have beautiful calligraphy-like handwriting! Beautiful!! 💕
Thank you for this pretty tutorial! It’s true that the most interesting greens are the ones we mix. Well, it’s hard to think summer is over, but I like the idea of starting a sketchbook of holiday themed paintings. Love your kitty, too!!
Oh Diane, what a beautiful painting! I love holly berries and am so happy to see your process on sketching and painting them. The color variations of the greens and reds are really nice and in my opinion make it even more realistic. I'm going to be hand painting all of my christmas cards again this year (thanks to you, it will be the third year in a row) and I'll definitely be including this idea. It's such a joy to see how happy people are when they receive an original painting in the mail even though I'm not a professional. This joy adds so much to the spirit of the winter season :) Oriole (hope I spelled that correctly) is absolutely charming and so beautiful! What a sweet cat saying hello and being so comfortable exploring around your studio and desk. Lucky cat for sure.
Very nice tutorial. Your tutorials are always the most helpful and well constructed. In Central California, on the coast, we don’t have holly, but we do have Mahonia-Oregon Grape. It looks similar but the berries are a beautiful grey blue color. This tutorial should help when I am sketching native plants. Thank you both
Great tips for sketching/painting holly. Love the look of the varied greens. Gives so much life to the painting. I definitely see holly added to candles, stockings, presents, birds and loads of other holiday scenes in Christmas cards for friends. Thank you once again.
I always feel dyslexic when I try to draw a holly leaf!? You make it look so easy and I always have trouble on the reverse side of the leaf! So guess what. I have to practice and practice to train my brain. Thank you Diane. I love the Christmas greens you create❤. Olah Oriel!
I love the way you showed us both ways to paint and do ink. Mixing greens is such a great practice too. Thank you Diane! Can't wait for the next video!
My 36 th IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE REALISTIC BUT INTERESTING. 🎉 I have to watch it again to paint it and experiment with the color(mixing). As always nice and assessable content. Sometimes I write with capitals because you shared a good tip. This one also : DON'T WORRY WITH STAYING WITHIN THE LINES.😅 thanks for sharing and have a nice day Wim
I appreciated the information on creating a NATURAL looking GREEN! Could we do a tutorial on what are the best combinations for the best greens? Maybe what are your "go to" combinations?
Hello Oriel...Thank you Diane for this, I am so anxious to be painting fall and winter scenes again. I will designate a sketch book for Winter and holidays that is a very good idea.
Hi Diane! I love painting holly and this is such a great tutorial. I love the mixing of different colors and I think it made a huge difference! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this. It’s always good to prepare for Christmas a little early. I don’t know about holly leaves, but young leaves are usually a lighter green. I’ve never seen holly in Australia. Your cat is beautiful. My female cat is very talkative too. Have a wonderful day 🫶
Thank you for doing a Christmas-y video now in September! I have time to paint now. When December rolls around, I’ll most likely be so busy with a million things that painting may get short shrift. I’ll be so happy to look through my paintings and find some I can use for cards that need to be sent right away or for gifts. Thanks!
That’s great to hear Bonnie, what a great idea! I will be doing a few more Christmas things in the next week or two, especially the nature based ones I expect. So glad you’re enjoying painting, and thanks so much for commenting, it helps us a lot to hear from you xxx
I love the holly but, like pinecones, they are harder to draw than you would think. Mine are usually very long and skinny! This is a great tutorial. Hello to Oriel.
Thank you for this one - it's definitely putting me in the mood for the holidays! You make it look easy, as always. But I know I'll be stewing over my greens. LOL. I grew up with this pretty variety of holly up north, but here in central Florida, our hollies tend to have smooth leaf edges, and don't really evoke that "Christmas" feeling.
We do not have holly as a native plant here in northwestern South Dakota, but I have always used it as a sort of “trademark” when signing some of my work. I learned in the last few years that holly is naturally a smooth-leaf plant but, if injured, usually by wildlife such as deer nipping the plant, the leaves will go into a protective mode by growing the spiked leaves. As artists, we most definitely use the obvious spiked version to clearly depict the plant. Interesting study of mixing greens; and here I thought it was BLUE & yellow that made green … who would have thought BLACK and yellow for green???
A good reminder that you don't have to use the colours straight from the tube! I'm wary of mixing too much as the colours get muddy sometimes, but I'll give this a go without using the greens!

I think you just finally made something click for me with drawing Holly leaves... I wish I could high 5 you, thank you so much!
Brilliant, so glad to hear that!
Ohhh!!! He is sooo beautiful!!! All my kitties are now in heaven waiting for me! I shall be patient…. Lovely holly, Diane!!
I’m a person that lives in the moment and doesn’t rush the seasons. As we are not even at Fall yet I will watch this video in December. 😊
I couldn’t agree more, but we are at the mercy of various other factors, which have forced me to put a video for Christmas up in September! Never mind, it will be there when you’re ready for it!
love this again, thank you. I made a first sketch and i m very pleased with it. 🤩
And made a second one too. LOL
Love the furbabies! ❤❤❤
My cat ALWAYS wants to watch me paint and then sit on my painting lol!

OMG, time does fly. I guess it's time to start thinking about Xmas again 🤭. Lovely exercise, Diane. Thank you 🙏🏼

I am a complete newbie. Found your channel and look forward to your videos every day. Learning so much! Thank you!!!!!!!!
Welcome to the channel Anita! So glad you found us - we have loads and loads of videos for you to watch, and you won’t be a newbie for long! LOL❤️
She's the best! Glad you found her channel too! I've learned so much from her.
Never too early to start with Christmas ideas. I much prefer them to the fall themes & colors.
I love the idea of creating a Christmas sketchbook to practice in.
Very nice..always like holly…Christmas will be on the doorstep before we know it….sweet cat
Good to learn more color mixing! 👍
Thank you 🤗 yes, it’s the most important thing really.
Diane I love watching you bring a sketch, and painting together 😊
I love the idea of starting with colour then finishing with black pen and then the other way round. This is such an interest and varied way of working. Brilliant. Thank you Diane.
Love when you show your pets, animals and garden at the end or beginning of your videos! And lovs your art too!
Thank you so much 😀
That would make a pretty card.
Cats ❤ they are so adorable and healthy 😍 nice holly berries too. Thank you.
💜💜💜 and I love seeing your “critters”
Thank you, I’ll make a couple of cards inspired by this.
Wow! More dense than I've seen. Nebraska, here, we don't grow it. In my childhood, we decorated the chalkboard on Christmas, the night we did our Christmas play. Holly was a favorite.
Oreo is very cute. 😍
Painted holly gift cards to tie on packages years ago. Quick and fun. Now I am inspired to create branches with varying greens...so rich. Thank you.
Thank you so much for teaching us to paint Hollis!

I love painting Holly!
Beautiful as always xx
Thanks for the lesson on holly. I always have a challenge when it comes to Holly. Now I can watch this when I am creating something with Holly.
You are so welcome! Thanks so much for commenting!
Thank you, Diane, for such a wonderful video.
The watercolor of the Holly would be a great Christmas card. Thanks 😊

One of my favorite Christmas themes! Really good!
Thank you for this pretty tutorial! It’s true that the most interesting greens are the ones we mix. Well, it’s hard to think summer is over, but I like the idea of starting a sketchbook of holiday themed paintings. Love your kitty, too!!
Summer went super quick this year - let’s hope we have just as quick a winter!

I love this and can't wait to get practicing. Oreo is beautiful!! Thanks much for sharing, Diane

You can do it Denise! Anyone who can sew a quilt like you just did can draw a holly leaf!!!

That’s great Wim, I’m so honoured that you’re putting me in capital letters!!🤣🤣🤣
Lovely thank you
A dedicated sketch pad for different holidays or just different single ideas is a wonderful idea!!! I can't wait to see your Christmas ideas. ❤
I absolutely love painting holly. I always have. I’ve never seen it in person though. Not a real plant.
That‘s a pity Amanda, I wish I could send you a sprig of it!
You share so many great tips about mixing colours, thank you!
Watching your videos ‘makes’ my day!❤
I'm so glad!
Pretty greens! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Diane. I've been looking forward to doing something Christmasy.
You are so welcome! It’ll be here soon!

Great idea! I’ll try to think about that.
I am looking forward to future Christmas videos. Love this! Thanks Diane 😊❤

I think these will make beautiful Christmas cards and Oriole is a sweetie petutie. Thank you for ending your video with some of furry love!
You are so welcome!

Another great lesson, Diane! Looking forward to trying this sketch over the weekend! Thank you.

Beautiful! Loved the fall ideas yesterday and I’m always up for Christmas ideas. Thanks!
christmas already? 😮 you're prepared
I love the holly but, like pinecones, they are harder to draw than you would think. Mine are usually very long and skinny! This is a great tutorial. Hello to Oriel.
Thanks for sharing Deb, yes, you’re right!
Oh yes, I know the kind of Holly, you mean sometimes our Holly doesn’t have spiky bits either. Maybe it’s something to do with the weather!

I’m sorry…Oriel!
