60 years ago, when I was 13, I saw the movie "Letter From An Unknown Woman" with Louie Jordan and Joan Fontaine and fell in love with this piece which was the theme song. It has been my favorite piece of music ever since and still brings tears to my eyes. Also, if you're interested in seeing a beautiful movie, try to find "Letter From An Unknown Woman" you won't regret it. : )
We had a piano growing up and none of us knew how to play it, but my grandmother used to try. She got a Liszt album from the Salvation Army and used to try to play one song she particularly loved. She died still unable to play it. I've spent years hunting for that one song but could never find it because I didn't know the name. Until today. I have a keyboard and I'll pick up where she left off. I don't know piano, but I'll play through the tears to hear the beauty she heard. I love you Grandma.
I love when someone can express the unexpressable words of the soul. I am grateful for artists. poets, and composers who bring these yearnings to life. Amazing peice of music.
I think Mr.Hamelin has such mastery over the notes, that while listening, the notes are able to melt together. In this way Liszt's transcendental side is beautifully rendered. Music making on the highest level, IMHO.
I have always loved this beautiful Liszt composition, and hearing Marc-Andre Hamelin's rendition of it, played here so effortlessly and elegantly, is the reason why. His inspired playing is an inspiration to those of us who love the art of the piano and to those of us who are pianists.
A truly spectacular performance. I love this piece. I like how the left hand evokes the inhaling and exhaling of the sigh (il suspiro) that gave the piece its name.
I first heard this piece in an old 40's film called Letter From An Unknown Woman with Joan Fontaine and Louis Jordan (?). Never forgot the music and finally found out it's name and have been forever happy. One of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard and tears just seem to roll out of my eyes when I listen. Bravo to the pianist Marc Hamelin.
Ditto! My first time hearing this was in high school when the girl who played turned out to be my first love -- I should say my first unrequited love. This was in a very romantic period during the late 50's. Tears then and tears now each time I play it.
I grew up listening to only rock & roll, and yet the firt time I accidentally heard this song it moved me like no other ! What a beautiful, beautiful song! Rock on Franz!!!!!
Absolutely the most gorgeous performance of this magic piece of all times. Hamelin, whose touch is that of an angel, makes all the others sound like baby elephants pounding on the keys.
This is undoubtably the best performance of this piece. Hamelin has that ability to create that wonderfully soft sound that is unique to him which suits this piece perfectly
Liszt (and Chopin too) to begin the year. A piece of music like this awakes our emotions, especially when it is played by magnificient musicians. New year, new life, but always good music!
I have always been interested in piano and wanted to learn; I believe watching this rendition come to life has just inspired me to get the ball rolling...
Just beautiful. All those who say Hamelin is all technique and lacks emotion clearly don't have their heads (or hearts) screwed on straight. This is the most touching performance of this work I've ever heard.
So many arpeggios... it's bad ass, yet there is a distinct and beautiful melody. No on can recompose or create a piece with such imagination and story behind it.
Exceptional performance of one of the most beautiful pieces Liszt ever wrote, showing that Marc-André Hamelin is much more than a mere virtuoso. Thanks for the post!
Liszt is such a beautiful composer. It's sad that he is remembered only for his virtuosity as a pianist and not his extraordinary innovations in harmony and his wonderful control over the music.
this is just heavenly. this particular song i listened to in my music history class that evoked emotions beyond emotions, almost to tears. "happy" tears though
Liszt uses his not inconsiderable powers to lay this out beautifully on the piano. Mr Hamelin uses his not inconsiderable powers to bring the piece off. Lovely piece and lovely performance; within the tempo he has set he fully realizes the singing-line, and never lets the accompaniment overshadow it
I remember when Hamelin was this young wizkid in Montreal, wowing everyone in his path. He had a sweet, bubbly personality. He is an undiscovered treasure. I wish he would tour the world and come to perform in California, like the other Quebecois: Louis Lortie.
this piece had to blow minds when it first came out. I'm not a serious student of music, but the runs have the strangest harmonies. and that ending. wow.
Marc Andre-Hamelin has been described as the most technically perfect pianist there is. If there is ever such thing as perfection, this is as close as you will get to it I think.
this piece is one of the most beautiful i've heard, in and of itself, and as long as it's not butchered, it can still sound okay even in the hands of someone less talented than hamelin (and i'm talking about professional pianists, not myself) -- but i don't think i've ever heard an interpretation like this. completely amazing. he brings out the melody better than maybe anyone else i've heard play this. incredible dynamics.
i icant believe some of the TRITE comments of this work from people .. this is being played by a man who is SHEER GENIUS. this is FANTASTIC BRILLIANT WONDERFUL and Mr Hamlin is GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for sharing:)
@Mustloveoranda what one needs to bear in mind is that the inspirational TALENTS of both composer and pianist here are the result of the greatest artist ever, being made in his Creative image, our ALMIGHTY LORD Incredible and beautiful all praise to you our Lord!
There was nothing random about this. I have hunted for Un Sospiro for 15 years but couldn't find it because I didn't know the name until I found this video. I was so overwhelmed at hearing it again for the first time in so long that I felt compelled to share my story. I'm sorry if that wasn't so clear in my comment.
This performance of such a beautiful piece is just spectacular. I've never heard it played as well as this. I actually downloaded the sheet music after listening to it and just stared at it. Hamelin makes it sound so easy while I barely managed the first eight measures. I like to just watch his fingers while he's playing because they're moving all over the place but it's just perfection. Thanks for uploading this.
What a fantastic performance of this piece!! I love it! His technique is sublime and the voicing is outstanding!! man...I will be watching this over and over again.
This performance is very expressive and he gets all the nuance he can out of the piano where the music of Liszt comes through with out a doubt as the master might have intended it. He did write several versions of this work and never played it the same. Its more like an improvisation than an actual composition where the score somehow is just a skeleton to what it should actually sound like.
Just gorgeous. I started working on this piece way, way before I should have (11 or 12) and have been systematically destroying it ever since. Awesome to hear such a wonderful performance. I bet he added that alternate ending in his later years. He wrote some visionary stuff then. His brilliance at the keyboard probably got in the way of his deepening his compositional gifts.
For anyone that feels small as a pianist after watching Hamelin simply "own" this piece, take heart. Hamelin is considered the greatest technician to come along since Cziffra or Horowitz. He is in his early 40s here and just coming into his prime as an interpretive musician. One can only aspire to this kind of greatness without every realistically expecting to get there. Relax and enjoy.
It's an absolute wonderful version!!! Such a lot of quiteness... Listen to the first notes... You're still enchanted!!

Hamelin's performance raises the bar and sets the bench mark! So inspirational!! Much Envy and Respect to him!!!
I first heard this song on Kings (great show) and fell in love with this song on the show. This is a beautiful piece.

i love how even the notes in the beginning are. there is not a single note that 'jumps' out before the main melody comes in, what a pianist! magic!
I have always been interested in piano and wanted to learn; I believe watching this rendition come to life has just inspired me to get the ball rolling...

I've listened to so many recordings of this. For me it's completely the best. Just another level of sensitivity - and live.
A truly moving experience. This pianist plays from his soul. And he certainly touched mine.
It's the most beautiful piece in the world and Hamelin brings it to life.
Exceptional performance of one of the most beautiful pieces Liszt ever wrote, showing that Marc-André Hamelin is much more than a mere virtuoso. Thanks for the post!
This is a beautiful performance of the piece. I wish I could play this piece this well...
My college music appreciation teacher introduced our class to this piece recently, for which I am very glad. Beautiful!
my friend who is 13years old was playing this!!
and that was really amazing!!!
One of the best performances of this I've ever heard. Expect nothing less from the magnificant Hamelin.
Liszt is such a beautiful composer. It's sad that he is remembered only for his virtuosity as a pianist and not his extraordinary innovations in harmony and his wonderful control over the music.
Love the selection of this piece for the Kings series, perfect music for the coronation scene... I'm really sad they were cancelled...
本当に美しい名曲ですね。有り難うございます。🎶❤️🎶
this is just heavenly. this particular song i listened to in my music history class that evoked emotions beyond emotions, almost to tears. "happy" tears though
This is extraordinary ... a heavenly piece being performed by a divinely talented individual. Inspiring!

Thanks for posting! I learned a lot listening to Hamelin's interpretation.
This is completely unreal. Best rendering of this song I've ever heard.
That was pretty amazing.
He kept it nice and smooth.
I remember when Hamelin was this young wizkid in Montreal, wowing everyone in his path. He had a sweet, bubbly personality.
He is an undiscovered treasure. I wish he would tour the world and come to perform in California, like the other Quebecois: Louis Lortie.
Incredible performance! One of the best performance I have ever heard this masterpiece is played. He did change the ending.
thanks to this fantastic person, i now love liszt! what an amazing perfomance...
My favorite piece of all times and the way Hamlin plays it, no contest.
took me so long to be able to play this, but now it feels like heaven everytime I do
What a brilliant pianist! This is the best version I have ever heard. Perfect!
the emotions transformed into music, simply wonderful.
My one of the teachers at my school played the first part for me a while ago. Serious goosebumps!
i love how he plays this piece.
Best performance of this piece. No words for this....
this piece had to blow minds when it first came out. I'm not a serious student of music, but the runs have the strangest harmonies.
and that ending. wow.

The best I've heard. Wonderful musicality.
his technique is impeccable! He plays it completely effortlessly!
I can see I'm not the only one who tried to play it, this is quite encouraging.
It is a very beautiful piece, my favourite in fact.
brings tears to my eyes.... thank you very much
Definitely one of the best performances of this piece.

Proud to be hungarian. We haven't got a lot of composer, but the world biggest pianist was a hungarian, and it is enough for me...:)

This is the most beautiful piece ever written and Hamlin does an outstanding job playing it; get tears in my eyes every time I listen to it.
Such a stunning performance of an incredibly beautiful piece. Hamelin really knows how to play Liszt. Thank you so much for uploading this!
I have this video on my computer and it is by far the best version that I have heard!
i icant believe some of the TRITE comments of this work from people .. this is being played by a man who is SHEER GENIUS. this is FANTASTIC BRILLIANT WONDERFUL and Mr Hamlin is GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for sharing:)

Such touching music, it conjures images of a lost love being remembered from a distance of many years. Truly wonderful.

I love this piece so much. The accompaniment sounds like it's being played on a harp. Just incredible.
moving piece, brilliant. if franz liszt were alive today...
Simply unbelievable. I'm speechless. This recording ought to be bronzed.
@FranzLisztian
I have enjoyed Mr. Hamelin live (a number of times) and wish he could be here
forever. At least we have recordings....
Hamelin is one of the world's greatest pianists!
this piece is so beautiful.

Thank you for putting this up .... just awesome .... tears in my eyes!!! Thanks xx
what a master! his control is impeccable
This is absolutely beautiful.
Liszt. . .a 'rebel' in his time with his misunderstood music. Only true approvement after dieyng.
Awesome composer.

It is simply amazing.
@StormSong8 I cried while listening to this piece. Genuine words for genuine love.
Hamelin is very delicate and magic, wondeful version.
So beautiful.
who cares about the visual quality. this movie has better sound quality than most youtube videos, and with this type of music, that's what matters.
that's what i'm talking about!
music with magic!
Great! Amazing performance!
Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
