Wow really amazing work you’re doing now and what a transformation seabird is looking goooood hope things get better with the paint and you’re all satisfied just look how far you have come and the main thing as I keep saying is you guys are not changing you’re just the same as when you started this channel (rare on tube these days )and that’s why most people stick with you and the super consistent content 😊bloody brilliant as usual. I have a quick question and hopefully stu has the time to answer it for me Stu what do you do? Where the keel rests on the blocks, I’m no boater so often have the odd question and you guys some how have always managed to answer them for me. Really appreciate that about you.😊
Hiya, The keel blocks. We'll have to get them moved so we can fibreglass and paint that area. Crane lift, shift blocks, fibreglass and paint. We probably could do it with a jack, but... If it goes wrong. So pay the money and use the crane 🤣🤣🤣 Cheers for watching 🙂
Some days you're the windshield and some days you're the bug. Don't get discouraged. Take a rest, a deep breath, put a smile on your face, and go at it again.
Glossy finishes are a sh*tload of work to achieve. Layers and layers and layers of paint, then 800→1200→12562454 grid sanding, then the polish. Does she need to shine that much? Me, I come from a background of aviation, mostly gliders. It is so refreshing to see how little drama there is involved with working on fibreglass boats! "There´s a weak spot there! 🤯😵💫" "No worries! 🤷♂ Slap on two layers and she'll be right as rain! 🤗"
Ellohh - it's me again, your trustfully Paintshop-Manager from Berlin ;-) At first: you both has tried your very best and for newbies the result is not THAT bad. But, Marina, you're right: it could have been better. I already told you: the last coat is the tricky one. So here is my advice: #320 for sanding before the last coat was the right decision - BUT - Stu has just cut the tips of your two coats before ! The reason for that sand is to create a FLAT surface with no highs and lows and NOT just to roughen the surface for your final coat . . . Means: sanding Port AGAIN for that flat surface and sanding Starboard also to recieve the same surface quality. A tipp: in automotive paintshops there is a black powder available that can be brushed on with a pad thoroughly onto the surface. That shows you exactely during sanding where are the high aereas (the black is already sanded away) and where are the low spots (and pinholes): the black is still there. Before your final coat ALL the black has to be sanded away. If you don't can get that black powder a fine mist of mat-black ("Rally-Black") out of a spraycan does the same yob. Second: "we have decided to use the small roller . . ." - OKAY - so you have to live with the results . . . AGAIN: use the widest roller you can get AND DON'T USE THAT FLUFFY FELT AGAIN that you have used in the video ! I already told you: "use the SHORT HAIR roller (yes, i know, it's the most expensive one . . .) that is offered for laquer and varnish. Together with a REALLY smoothed out surface it will give you the best results possible for your skills and the local situation. Good luck and best regards from Berlin, Germany
Ok avec vous. Guide de ponçage et rouleau laqueur super large ou pistolet a peinture electrique Location 14€ par jour chez Kiloutou. Bon courage à vous.
Your boat is looking real nice especially the keel after the repairs. I noticed Stu was brushing back and forth. You should make a light stroke in one direction only. The idea id to smooth out the pattern left by the roller. Don't get discouraged. I know it's a lot of hard work but as long as you own the boar you will be proud of what you accomplished.
If you’re sick of it and ready to give up, I’ll take it if you don’t want it. Just kidding. I feel like you’re not giving yourself enough credit. I think she looks stunning. Also really happy to see an update on the keel. I’ve been wondering how the drying out of that has been going.
They key to brushing is to use as little pressure as possible while still engaging the paint. You’re not trying to work the paint, rather just smoothing the surface. Small imperfections will settle out as the paint rests. Stu needs to wrap his hand around the heel of the brush, near the bristles. Then use the very tips of the bristles to smooth the roller marks. Straight horizontal even strokes, lifting pressure toward the end of each one. The quality of the brush plays a huge role…more than beginners realize. Get yourselves two fine edge finishing brushes. At some point the paint on the first brush will start drying, getting thick. Then get the clean brush and keep going, while the used brush gets a cleaning. No one gets this perfect immediately. No one. Still, it will look far better than you may think when it’s all done and shining in the sun. You’ll quickly forget where there are any imperfections. Just remember, good brush and soft even strokes 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. How are you keeping? Step by step it's coming along. The painting turned out OK for the first attempt at a new technique. So not a total loss, trust the process. Cheers for watching 🙂
Hi . Water is kindly requested to stay ourside the kiel ... No chance after yr hard surgery 😉 Keep going . Launching of seabird is approaching. Congratulations for efforts and result .
As they say, “there are many ways to skin a cat” or indeed a keel and none of them are the last word in technique. Your friend knows the one that he was shown and has the length of experience to know that it works long term. Nobody could have put more effort into remedying your keel issues than yourselves and you fully deserve a good outcome. Another major milestone passed. Go well❤
Hello Marina and Stuart, imagine if one day in the future we meet on the sea and we remember the time of the boat search, the refit and the day you came up with the great idea of sailing the seven seas with Seabird. Believe me this will be the best beer you will ever have beyond the equator because you got the boat back on the water despite all the obstacles. Cheers, Juergen
Hello again. The keel looks really good. I think I heard you say your friend was a professional at that work. That's a good idea. About the painting, on the internet I see several people who are restoring their boat exterior using a spray gun to paint the boat. Have you thought about giving the spray device a try? Ok, have fun and don't get stressed. It will be ok. Ciao. geo
Spraying is the best. No question. We just don't have the machine, the know-how, and we aren't allowed to spray in the shed. This new technique is ok. The finish is pretty good. Sometimes, just give things a little time. So, a final sand and one more coat. We promise! 🤣🤣🤣 Cheers for watching 🙂
If it was easy then everyone would do it! As everyone has been saying tipping is a VERY light touch with the brush - hardly even bending the bristles! Easy to say - very hard to do, especially if you don't do it every day for a job! Try not to be down Marina. You are both working so very hard and it shows in how fantastic it all looks. Richard (UK)
Marina, please don't get discourage. Possibly you could investigate with your thinning process of spray the final coat? The keel looks fabulous, nice fairing. Get a good meal and a nights rest and think positive thoughts.
Take heart. As you know, everything takes longer and then some. Follow the different advice, trial it out just on the transom, repeat until you find something that works. You will crack it.
I remember this video, Stuart drilled a bazillion holes and I thought you were mad. Then you went to work in a ski resort. I assumed you had abandoned the project, glad to say I really enjoy your video's and you have done an amazing job.
Make sure the paint is not too thick. Tip only one pass. Make sure the time interval is as short as possible. Also not all brands of paint are even easy to work with.
I’m curious Marina, I know this is getting way ahead of the game but after you finish painting, do you still have to put a gel coat on Seabird. Also, do sailboats use anti fouling paint on the keel and maybe below the waterline like flat bottom boats? I have no idea what they’re doing these day with regards to these things. Like I said in my email, it’s been over 40 years since I’ve done any work on a certain 14 foot boat in the yard. And in 40 years a lot of things might change….. Let me know what Stuart thinks about these things… Till next time you two… 👍🏻🍻💙😎. Tommy
Don't give up, you will find the right solution, I have not been successful in tipping, always leaves brush strokes but I am admittedly heavy handed with everything I do so that could be part of it.
It has to be tipped very gently ,it's not meant to move the paint about , just to touch the surface and even out things like roller bubbles , you were going back and forth as if you were painting it with the brush and not the roller, start on the transom to get it iright then the Hull when you have the technique, now light sand then a good polish and it will look great . Don't be disheartened you're doing g an incredible job, keep smiling and keep the great videos coming , I can't wait to see you out on the water again.❤❤
So good to see the keel Looking great… amazing where you have come from to get to this stage … and have loved watching your humour and skill in equal measure
WOW! Soo very impressed with the way the keel came out!!! Please finish the hull painting until you are truly happy with it, the long lasting view and reward with be worth it.
Thank you! Will do! I think it's ok, the finish is great. Just a few bits that turned out a bit saggy. We are actually amazed how well the finish turned out. We'll call that a practice layer 🤣 Cheers for watching 🙂
Go watch Mark on wildling sailing, he met a new friend that paints boats for a living and he helped Mark and everything is showed how to properly do it and his hulls shine like they're covered in glass. Seabird is steadily looking better than ever.. nobody is a professional on their first attempt. Worst case scenario you sand it down to the primer and start over..
flatten that final paint coat with 1200 wet and dry will be slow going small areas and then machine polish use farecla cutting polish paste then wax and it will be like a mirror finish, trust me ,even if it was sprayed out a gun you dont get the top notch look without a flatten and polish its the only way it can be done
When you tip with the brush you want to do only single horizontal strokes from wet area toward the drying area (not choppy back & forth strokes) ......and you want to tip while the paint you just rolled is wet so work in 2'-3' areas as you go .....what happens is the tipping from wet to drying area smooths the orange peel texture from the roller and each brush stroke blends into each brush stroke, creating a perfectly smooth finish as it start to immediately set. Don't brush back & forth or in all different directions.....just one solid stroke, each time lifting the brush off as you tip into the drying previous painted area...if you messed up a spot, just brush again from newly rolled to previously tipped area, but before it starts to set up. Its all about tipping while paint is wet & before any is setting up. If you tip it well, it will look better than a sprayed finish! When I Roll & Tip, I use a 3" brush in my left hand and roller in my right hand....I keep moving in 30" +/- areas, rolling on the paint, ending with finishing vertical strokes only, then "quickly" tip that area, again from newly rolled to previously rolled with slightly overlapping horizontal strokes only....lifting brush off as each stroke just encounters the "drag" of the previously tipped paint.
;-) saling, sanding... at the end, it double's the funn. the kiel is watertight , that good, thumbs up and see you next week, enjoy thanks for showing this
Hey guys, great job. Boat will look great, don’t fret about the finer details! After a week in the water and salt spray who’s gonna care. AND, you’ll hardly even see it from where you’re going to be seated! It will be great and such a difference from where it began. Well done. All the best from 🇦🇺
Don’t get disheartened yoy will get there. You bith are doing an amazing job you should be proud of your achievements. Myself and my wife dance lindy hop and the charlatan. As soon as that music came on we both jumped up and started dancing 💃
Hello again. If you decide against the spray gun another way to try is reverse your positions. Let Stu be in front brushing and you follow him with the roller, that might smooth it out. Ok, stay relaxed and don't get upset. ciao. geo
¡Animo! We all get these setbacks. I know nothing about painting fibreglass but would it be possible to spray paint it? Normally you get a better and more consistent finish. Don't let this override all the excellent work you've done so far on my favourite vlog.
Our first coat after primer was…okay. Our second and third, not so much. Two to go, but we’ve waited almost a year. We got distracted by other projects. 😂 Your boat will be fine! Whatever our result, we’re just going with it. I want to go sailing. 🥰❤️😎🥰❤️😎
Oh guys hang in there! You are just amazing! It's really not easy to paint in the heat and there are some really good tips here already so I won't waste space repeating them. You are great and I'm so impressed with what you achieved. I'm refitting an Albin Ballad 30 and I've been beating myself recently for a mistake that set me back a week, so I know how you must feel Marina! The cool thing I've learned from saving an old boat is that making mistakes is part of it. I used to be afraid of messing things up, but I'm getting more confident that the more mistakes I make the more i learn. Sometimes I have to make a mistake in order to know how to go about it. And yes there are limits for what I can redo/repair/fix. But most of the time all I need is a day away from the boat. Treat yourself for you are great, and tomorrow I'm confident that you will make her shine.❤❤❤
Setbacks are just part of life, everyone has them. What matters is that we try and learn from them to build our character and this makes us a more fulfilled person. You are both doing a great job and you have both great strength together for when one is down the other is there to always provide support.
Love this channel so much. I like that you work your butts off without a lot of money or resources and you're learning as you go. At the end of this you'll end up with a beautiful blue water boat that can go anywhere ... plus lots of fans of course!
I have an encapsulated keel as well, I took out the keel cap because of some keel issue. I know the feeling you felt with that foul bilge water infused keel water. Glad you got it fixed.
Marina, don't be discouraged. As Stu said, there are no vertical stripes and from what you showed us the paint will even out as it dries and look better. If you are going to do another coat make sure Stu is right with you doing light tipping as soon as you finish each vertical roller stroke so the paint is as wet as possible.
You were right leaving the boat overnight when you were disappointed with the painting result. You are both resourceful so you will find a way to get the job done to your satisfaction.
@@SailingSeabirdyou will get it. It takes practice. You need to be closer together(timewise) for the tipping. Really really lightly, the brush barely touching the surface. Just one time top to bottom. It took me a couple of boats to get where I was satisfied. You both doing a great Job. All the best!!!👍🏝️☮️
You need to tip in one direction! with the tip of the brush not the whole brush! It's really not hard I have done it by myself rolling and tipping on a boat twice the size as yours. You can do it don't be disheartened! You guys are amazing trust you can do it.
@@SailingSeabird I'm so happy for you. I could see how hard you had worked and how upset you where in the last video. my heart blead for you. I know that pain. perseverance has paid off for you bro. cant wait to see the results. give yourselves a pat on the back and god bless you both.
Please be easy on yourself. It's only paint. It's going to look so much better than it did before. I'm like you, I want to do the job perfectly for a premium result. It's going to look great. The first nick you get will take the edge off the perfection anxiety. White will be easier to touch up than dark colors. Take care 💖🤗⛵🐬🌊🏝️🌅 S/V Cork~Texas 🇺🇸😁
I completely agree, with great respect from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 painting and finishing takes time to master. You may become epoxy fairing masters and that’s grand.
Remember the first time you moor up to a pontoon for a days the shine starts to fade. If you had perfection it would be all the harder to stomach. That’s why I never buy new cars. The bloom rubs off so easily.
@@SailingSeabird. Check out the professional roll and tip guy who did wildlings sailing boat a year who or so. His video might teach the right process for you. Lu was brushing back and first way too much. It’s one swipe of the brush.
Professionals sure can work circles around us hobbyists. I am not a professional at any manual labor, so I learn so much from watching a professional. It was fun to see how much more quickly he could do what you have been trying for months.
We tried rolling and tipping not very successful. I abandonned the tipping after about a metre and half and just used the roller. It was 'good enough' Ive seen videos of boats being rolled and tipped producing a mirror finish I dont know what we did wrong but it's not as easy as it looks. Fortunately I'm not a perfectionist. Keep up the good work.
I’ve not done the rolling and tipping method myself… but every time I’ve seen it done they roll and tip in only one direction…, vertically. Tipping they usually only go from top to bottom.
I admire your tenacity and resolve. It didnt work out in the end but you guys have the gumption to get it right. Keep on keeping on!!!! Thanks for your great entertaining content.
I really don't see it, but thank you so much for your kind words. We just doing things until we are happy with them. Sometimes it works out, other times not so much. You can't quit, it's not finished 🤣 Cheers for watching 🙂
Just look at the big picture and this issue will be soon in your memory to strength your proud. Just imagine Sailing it and looking back and saying: "I'm glad I've passed through all this to get here!" 💪
After painting, I would lightly wet sand with 800, then 1500 grade on a block then Farcela G3 compound with water on a machine to give a really good shine.
Don't be disheartened. You can make it like like a professional job if you sand using increasingly finer paper and then buff and polish it. Takes a lot of elbow grease but if the paint is thick enough it will come up a treat.
They key to brushing is to use as little pressure as possible while still engaging the paint. You’re not trying to work the paint, rather just smoothing the surface. Still, it will look far better than you may think when it’s all done and shining in the sun. You’ll quickly forget where there are any imperfections. Just remember, good brush and soft even strokes 👍
Good enough is good enough.

Amazing work Marina & Stu!!
The keel looked like Gruyere Cheese after the drilling!
It will float!
!!!!
😊
❤❤❤👍👍👍
flatten that final paint coat with 1200 wet and dry will be slow going small areas and then machine polish use farecla cutting polish paste then wax and it will be like a mirror finish, trust me ,even if it was sprayed out a gun you dont get the top notch look without a flatten and polish its the only way it can be done
Yes yes Farecla cutting paste and then a machine polish has done WONDERS for me, it is a little pricey though but worth every cent.
Yep!
very fine sanding followed by a polish.
Keep your chin up y’all worked so hard it’s going to be okay a good shower some wine and a good rest will make it so much better in the morning.
When I Roll & Tip, I use a 3" brush in my left hand and roller in my right hand....I keep moving in 30" +/- areas, rolling on the paint, ending with finishing vertical strokes only, then "quickly" tip that area, again from newly rolled to previously rolled with slightly overlapping horizontal strokes only....lifting brush off as each stroke just encounters the "drag" of the previously tipped paint.
the only good adwise but you don't learn that on your first boat
;-) saling, sanding... at the end, it double's the funn.
the kiel is watertight , that good, thumbs up and see you next week, enjoy
thanks for showing this
Hey guys, great job. Boat will look great, don’t fret about the finer details! After a week in the water and salt spray who’s gonna care. AND, you’ll hardly even see it from where you’re going to be seated! It will be great and such a difference from where it began. Well done. All the best from 🇦🇺
WOW what a difference. Now you have a boat you can trust. Well done.
Marina & Stuart you are doing SO well...love love loooove your videos⛵️⚓️⛵️
That scene when you drill the keel the first time makes me laugh so hard every time.
Don’t get disheartened yoy will get there. You bith are doing an amazing job you should be proud of your achievements.
Myself and my wife dance lindy hop and the charlatan. As soon as that music came on we both jumped up and started dancing 💃
Chin up 👍🦘🇦🇺
The keel looks solid!
Here's hoping...
🤣🤣🤣
Cheers for watching 🙂
you will get there stay the course
Put out an album. 😂😂😂😂😂
I think you’re just tired. It’ll look great in the morning
I think you are hilarious , love watching you two, and Freebird looks awesome
Setbacks are just part of life, everyone has them. What matters is that we try and learn from them to build our character and this makes us a more fulfilled person. You are both doing a great job and you have both great strength together for when one is down the other is there to always provide support.
Stewart was not tipping he was so aggressive. From what I saw. Wish best of luck
It looks great don’t sweat it.
Looks good from here. It's a shame I can't send a photo of my'n painted two summers ago in viveiro Spain. Craig
Love this channel so much. I like that you work your butts off without a lot of money or resources and you're learning as you go. At the end of this you'll end up with a beautiful blue water boat that can go anywhere ... plus lots of fans of course!
Hello again, continued good luck!!!
It's okay the keel job is exellent can't wait for the next one
You doing a good job stop putting your self down
I have an encapsulated keel as well, I took out the keel cap because of some keel issue. I know the feeling you felt with that foul bilge water infused keel water. Glad you got it fixed.
Hopefully it's fixed enough..
Only time tell.
Most importantly is no more water can penetrate.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Marina, don't be discouraged. As Stu said, there are no vertical stripes and from what you showed us the paint will even out as it dries and look better. If you are going to do another coat make sure Stu is right with you doing light tipping as soon as you finish each vertical roller stroke so the paint is as wet as possible.
You're not trying to impress the Monaco crowd. Function over form.
You were right leaving the boat overnight when you were disappointed with the painting result. You are both resourceful so you will find a way to get the job done to your satisfaction.
Thank you.
It's actually not that bad.
We can't be good at things on our first attempt.
We learnt we try again.
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabirdyou will get it. It takes practice. You need to be closer together(timewise) for the tipping. Really really lightly, the brush barely touching the surface. Just one time top to bottom.
It took me a couple of boats to get where I was satisfied.
You both doing a great Job.
All the best!!!👍🏝️☮️
Just use a foam roller no tipping required, also every time in the future after sanding it will get better and better thanks for the video
You need to tip in one direction! with the tip of the brush not the whole brush! It's really not hard I have done it by myself rolling and tipping on a boat twice the size as yours. You can do it don't be disheartened! You guys are amazing trust you can do it.
I think we found our technique.
Seabird is looking pretty shiny.
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabird I'm so happy for you. I could see how hard you had worked and how upset you where in the last video. my heart blead for you. I know that pain. perseverance has paid off for you bro. cant wait to see the results. give yourselves a pat on the back and god bless you both.
It will be fine in the end, Marina. Hang in there. We have all been where you are. And we all came out the other side,
Please be easy on yourself.
Very true.
But it's only a few hours of work.
Not a massive issue but we'd like to get it better.
Cheers for watching 🙂
I completely agree, with great respect from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 painting and finishing takes time to master. You may become epoxy fairing masters and that’s grand.
I had it exactly like you orangeskin,Iwas disappointed at the end I live it at sea you don't seeing it anymore if it's not to bad.
It'll be fine 🙂
As it dries it should even out…. Right
I admire your tenacity and resolve. It didnt work out in the end but you guys have the gumption to get it right. Keep on keeping on!!!! Thanks for your great entertaining content.
I really don't see it, but thank you so much for your kind words.
We just doing things until we are happy with them.
Sometimes it works out, other times not so much.
You can't quit, it's not finished 🤣
Cheers for watching 🙂
Stay positive and keep going, it's difficult to use the brush without leaving lines, have to be so gentle just the lightest of touch, good luck 🎉🎉🎉
Getting there guys! 😊
Hey Team Seabird, don't be disheartened. Keep going ❤❤❤
Just look at the big picture and this issue will be soon in your memory to strength your proud. Just imagine Sailing it and looking back and saying: "I'm glad I've passed through all this to get here!" 💪
Only a little set back guys, you’ve made so much progress in the last few videos don’t let it get you down🙂 still a great video as always👍
After painting, I would lightly wet sand with 800, then 1500 grade on a block then Farcela G3 compound with water on a machine to give a really good shine.
Hiya Simon,
I think we have done it.
We found a system that works and the results are OK.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Don't be disheartened. You can make it like like a professional job if you sand using increasingly finer paper and then buff and polish it. Takes a lot of elbow grease but if the paint is thick enough it will come up a treat.
The boat will be beautiful ! On camera it's perfect :D
