We have talked about this routine and laughed about it since we saw it the first time so many years ago. I wish we still had an Ed Sullivan show
It was wonderful to see this type talent.

I have been looking for this act for years. I remember Louie from the Ed Sullivan show. Wanted to share it with my daughter and relive one of the funniest acts that ever was.

The Late Great Jerry Van Dyke had wanted a dog on the show COACH since the beginning of the show. They added QUINCY the Basset Hound on in season 3! Jerry said their was a dog act he saw on the Ed Sullivan Show that inspired the QUINCY character on COACH... I believe this is the dog act he was talking about ...
(source: the book: The Encyclopedia of TV Pets by Ken Beck, Jim Clark) ...“It was my idea for me to have a dog on the show,” says actor Jerry Van Dyke. “I was after them from the beginning, and finally Luther got a dog. It was my idea to have him ride in the little red
wagon, too. The idea was that this dog was so lazy he wouldn't even walk. The whole idea was to have him do nothing. I got the idea from The Ed Sullivan Show. There was this dog on there that wouldn't do anything his trainer asked him to do, but the trainer was so proud. He'd ask the audience, 'Did you see him? Did you see that?' whenever he asked the dog to perform some trick. Then he’d go over to pick up the dog, and the dog would be limp like a sack of bones. It was hilarious. I loved that dog. He was great. And I’m an animal lover, anyway. I love all animals.”

Really?? I remember sitting watching this act on tv with *my* father in the early days of tv here in Oz. I was reminded of it recently and searched for it on RUclips. Imagine my delight at finding it and laughing again just as hard after all these years. Thank you again and where on earth did you source it?

From the SNL skit Puppy Uppers & Doggie Downers, looks like ol Louie got into the Doggie Downers again. LOL That is one smart dog to be able to be trained to act & let that guy push him around, and place him in those poses & situations. Wouldn't surprise me if he were on some sort of tranquilizer to be man handled like that.

Cute, dogs don't do those sort of tricks anymore! I wonder how old Loui was when he was expected to perform these tricks. Did he come from a retirement home? In any event, this was good and I was waiting for Louie to follow instructions. He follows instructions like my cat, Seal, smart dog indeed!

Cruelty to animals. The guy should be arrested for animal abuse. He shows no respect for the dog.

The dog is clearly trained for this. He shows no sign of discomfort. His spaniel eyes are naturally serious. Were you paying attention at all? The dog subtly follows slight commands.

This video is sick and not funny at all. It exploits a helpless dog who appears to be older. To post this type of video is poor judgement and insensitive..Anyone who truly loves and respects animals can't possibly find this funny...

It takes as much training to do this act as any other act. Maybe more!
