    Hi Wayne, first time viewer here. I have an issue with your statement where you said hardened stainless steel can't be drilled. Well, yes it can, and it's done all the time. I have been in the aerospace manufacturing/machining field for over 47 years. I started out as a machinist in 1972, and am currently a senior manufacturing engineer. Drilling hardened (heat treated) stainless steel depends on the alloy and the heat treat process. There are some grades of stainless that can be heat treated to a high hardness that will resist drilling. Take 440c for example. This grade can be heat treated to a hardness value of 59Rc which is higher (harder) than most other grades of stainless. Now, this can be drilled, but not by hand which is where you, which I understand are coming from. 440c at a hardness of 59 Rc needs to be mounted in a solid fixture on a machine with power feed with flood coolant. Cobalt drills will work, but wears out after a few holes. Solid carbide drills work pretty good.
    The bottom line I am trying to make is actually to help you when you make well informed videos like this one that will be seen by a ton of people. Yes, I know it's over six years old, but in my quest for entry door lock hardware information I came across your video here. I am now a subscriber to your channel, and I found the video very informative as I thought Medeco was the be-all end-all of locks. Now I know different. I will be looking for Assa now unless something has turned up to be better since the time this video was made and now. I will be checking out your other videos.
    Best regards to you and Happy New Year!
    Dave

      From my understanding, picking stainless cylinders and ball bearings is not drilling plates. It can still be done I agree...

  • @tumbl3r
    @tumbl3r 8 лет назад +15

    I have picked all three of these locks (Pick & Gut videos are on my channel), and I have to say, I agree with your choice of ASSA. The Twin system (6000 in my case) is both incredibly well made and incredibly difficult to pick. I cannot speak to the overall security of these locks, but in terms of pick resistance, I would rank ASSA the highest.

      what do you think of the abloy protec2 deadbolt?

    • @tumbl3r
      @tumbl3r 8 лет назад

      Abloy Protec2 is a great locking system, but it does have a weakness in the back of the core where it can be punched out with relatively little force. Honestly, the ASSA Twin in my absolute favorite high security lock. The reality is that NOBODY will be picking this core in the "real world", and they have the other built in security features that make it impervious to the more common attacks like drilling, punching, cutting and forcing. For an all-around high security system, I have never seen a finer lock than the Twin system.

    • @louiscyfer6944
      @louiscyfer6944 8 лет назад

      tumbl3r with the expaning bolt, the abloy locks into the strike plate, and my understanding is that if it is not opened with a_ key, the expanding bolt stay in the door. so punching out the core should not open it. also, i have seen them punch out the core with the cylinder out in videos but not when still in the deadbolt behind the 1/4" hardened steel front plate.
      but i am not a locksmith, i am just going by what i have found so far. any more info is much appreciated.

    • @tumbl3r
      @tumbl3r 8 лет назад +2

      Good info, Louis! I was not aware of that. I'm not a locksmith either, so my knowledge of these things is certainly incomplete. I know Wayne has dome some comparative testing with Ablooy cores, so maybe he will chime in. I've always been impressed with how he takes a look at the overall security of a system.
      From a picking perspective, I just want people to know that there is no way an ASSA Twin is going to be picked an actual use setting. When we work on these locks as a hobby, we have the ability to disassemble them and re-pin them one pin at a time as we learn how to work on it. We also have a comfortable chair, a bottle of beer, and the lock is clamped up at the optimum working angle. Just because a small handful of us have managed it, please understand that it is only because we have had EVERY imaginable advantage. As a practical matter, this lock is unpickable.

    • @louiscyfer6944
      @louiscyfer6944 8 лет назад +1

      tumbl3r that is good info. i am just trying to make it more difficult for someone to get in so they choose an alternate target. good to know that in real life situation it is not pickable, as being picked is the biggest problem, if there is no sign of forced entry, the insurance company may not pay and the owner also becomes an automatic suspect. there is still video and dogs, and i like the lockable thumbturn of the abloy, if someone comes in through a window, they still can't go out the front door. i have narrowed my choice to the abloy and the assa, i do like the abloy key protection, especially the ruby option when only your dealer and the factory have even the blanks available, so another dealer can't even have a blank, thus making a copy becomes practically impossible. sometimes it is inevitable to have to let someone in, a repairman, maid, etc, and knowing that they can not possibly make a copy gives a good peace of mind.
      ultimately if someone wants to break in they can, i can only make it difficult and making sure they need to use a lot of force.

    The company I work for uses the Mul-T-Lock Interactive+ as our choice for high-security products, however, we also offer the Medeco m3. While we mostly sell the Mul-T-Lock product, I think you missed one point on the Medeco in that it has brand recognition and that, in-turn brings in leads and you can then discuss the difference between Medeco and the other product you prefer. At the end of the day, if the person still wants Medeco you can do it for them but the brand recognition by people who don't know much about locks is something Medeco has that no other high security lock brand has come even close to in North America.

    Very well done video. You seem to be fair to each company. I have a couple Medeco cylinders that contain ss key pins but brass drivers. Assa definitely has a superior product at this time at a better price point for the small business. As you said early in the video any of these are light years ahead of what is commonly used in this country.

    ASSA maintains a BHMA/ANSI 156.30 Security Rating, And additional security ratings by the NIJ (National Institute of Justice) for use in correctional institutions.
    Pick resistance as illustrated under UL-437 is for a minimum of 10 minutes; whereas the ANSI/BHMA 156.30 Standard for High Security Locks is a minimum of 15 minutes for picking with an addition of patent protected or restricted Keyway cross-sections and subsequent key control, in addition to the criteria as published under UL-437 regarding forcible entry and resistance to forced entry with the prescribed selection of commercially available tools as outlined under UL-437.

      ASSA is from Sweden.
      ABLOY is from Finland.
      The reason why I brought ABLOY into the conversation is because ASSA & ABLOY merged together as one corporate entity that has essentially bought up enough other lock companies worldwide to become one of the top four lock/security conglomerates in the world, alongside with -
      KABA/ILCO, Stanley Security Solutions (BEST Access Systems, Kwikset, Baldwin, and Weiser)
      ALLEGION (Schlage, Falcon, Kryptonite, Ives, and Steelcraft Door Company in North America.) along with (Briton and Cisa in Europe and Australia/ New Zealand.)
      (ALLEGION is a $2-Billion corporate spin-off from Worldwide Ingersoll-Rand, that has its corporate headquarters registered in Dublin, Ireland, and also owns manufacturers in Europe, Australia/New Zealand and north America.)
      In the U.S. domestic market alone, the "ASSA-ABLOY Security Group" also owns Arrow, Medeco, Corbin-Russwin, Sargent, and Yale.
      ASSA-ABLOY Security Group owns commercial hollow metal door & frame manufacturers; CECO Door Company & Curries.
      ASSA-ABLOY Security Group owns Israeli lock manufacturer Mul-T-Lock, of which is one of the popular high security locks seen in some high security lock installations in North America.

  • @slim_pickins1298
    @slim_pickins1298 9 лет назад

    Nice vid mate! Imo all three are pickable. The Schlage and Medeco can be picked in under 4 mins There are quite a few examples of this on RUclips as I'm sure you're aware of. The Assa would provide more of a challenge i reckon so it's the one I would choose if i had to.

    • @waynewinton
      @waynewinton  9 лет назад +1

      Well the videos of people picking those locks are only 4 minutes long however they usually require weeks or months of practice on the same Lock before they make their video. Not to mention there are even fewer videos that actually show the lock cylinder being fully pin after the alleged picking. One more thing to keep in mind is when I pin my Primus cylinders I use the ASSA spool pins. Not a Lock are keyed alike and customized deep and shallow bidding can give even the best daggers at Lock they cannot pick. But thank you for watching and have a great day!

    Even electronics don't make it 100% secure. It does, however, increase the difficulty factor. Honestly though ANY high security lock is going to stop 99% of criminals. The effort required to attain that level of skill is a major barrier to someone who has the sort of mindset that leads to a life of crime.

    One shortcoming of these informative but myopic videos is they are by and for lock geeks, in general, and so the theme ends up being "this select group is the current greatest" and everything else is tripe. The ordinary home can obviously benefit from two steps above Kwikset, but once past the solidity of the deadbolt, cut and drill and brute smash resistance, a basic level of pick resistance may be more valid against bumping, which some burglars may know about and try, and not esoteric artisans who devote years to the craft of picking high security locks. The jump from a poor $25 unit should find a substantially adequate version for no more than $100, but the jump to several hundred each isn't reasonable for the non-Oprahs amongst us. I bet no one has picked a standard Grade 1 Schlage commercial deadbolt in an actual burglary, and once the lock is not the weakest link, the sledges and stolen SUV bumpers come into play.

    TC aviation drill bits will chew out an ASSA Abloy lock. You MIGHT snap off two or three bits getting past those front pins but once you are into the stainless it drills easy. Stainless is not hard, it's tough, and it dulls bits fast. Emhart locks are still a bitch to pick open, and some of those are pegged with carbide pins up front. I can snap chunk of tungsten cutting rod, grind it to length, and make crap like Kwikshit or Home Cheapo Kwikshit knockoff locks drill resistant. You can still pick them stupid fast/easy, unless you start dropping in spools, mushrooms, serrated, & T pins. Some people get their jollies spending 3 days twirling Emhart pins around inside the cylinders until their dovetails slide on the shear lines. Same deal with Medeco locks. I don't like the premium Medeco charges to be a dealer. I am more willing to sell Mul-T's entire product line than drop the thousands of dollars just to deal in Medeco locks. When I say entire line of Mul-T that includes bespoke drive gates, and fancy fencing, complete with Mul-T's logo cut into the steel.
