When it comes to comic book movies, Venom is, without any shadow of a doubt, one of the most contentious characters in recent history.
The character has been portrayed by both American actor Topher Grace (in 2007's Spider-Man 3) and British star Tom Hardy (in this year's Venom) on the big screen - and both portrayals have received at least as much criticism as they have praise (probably more, in fact).
In this video, we'll be taking a look at both live action versions of the character and deciding which one is the best.
We'll be looking at factors like the initial reactions to the respective castings, how the actors performed as Eddie Brock, how the actors performed as Venom, the quality of the movies in which they appeared, the level of power their characters displayed, the power/worthiness of their respective opponents (Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man in the case of Topher Grace and Riz Ahmed's Riot in the case of Tom Hardy), and the critical and fan reception to the final product.

I love both Venom. Spiderman 3's venom is great cause they intentionally try to make him as terrifying as possible with such a slim build. Every time he screams and the camera is right in his face, is beyond awesome to watch. The parts that get me the most are when Peter is in construction building and Venom is making sounds all over the place and then suddenly grabs Peter from above. Then as mentioned before with the camera in his face when he screams like when Sandman grabs Venom mistaking him for Spiderman, and when Venom is about to kill Spidey, then Marry Jane drops a cinderblock on him as he turns back to scream, then peter punches him, and then he turns back and screams back at him again. Great Stuff.

Honestly I find critics to be up their own arse nowadays the divide between audience opinion and critic is huge for a lot of films.

Yes the critics hate Venom, but the fan score was pretty high, like almost 90%.
Of course, because in the end, it's the audience's opinion that matters.

Critic rating means nothing, only ever look at audience. I mean, the audience are the ones films are made for.

New one had story issues, but it was altogether pretty good.
SM3 Venom came off more as Carnage, but colored black. Really I would have liked to see Topher actually play Kassidy, but a little darker than in SM3.

Just because it didn't follow the "superhero movie recipe" doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Quite on the contrary, both myself and my wife enjoyed it immensely. My wife had no idea who Venom was to begin with but in the end she cared for the character. That's awesome, in my opinion!

@Grim Reaper you don't change an origin cuz that's who the character is. Uncle ben will always die, Cap will always be frozen, Krypton will always be blown up. It makes them who they are. Yeah Venom is more than a Spider-Man Villain but spiderman was always a factor in what makes Venom who he is. Without it he's no different than Riot or Phage or Lasher

Tom Hardy was definitely the better Venom, and maybe story wise Spider Man 3 was better, but I had way more fun watching Venom.

See, SM3 Venom just didn't feel or look like Venom. Hardy's version was much better.

I actually feel sad for Topher Grace. He played Eddie Brock exceptionally well, but his Venom was kinda bad. And he was blamed for most of the faults of Spiderman3, when the script was asking for a scrawny guy that mirrors Tobey's Peter Parker.

They did. They took elements from ultimate spider man that's why he says I instead of we. You can see in the behind the scenes they are reading ultimate spider man books.

To be honest to Grace he didn't have much screen time to accurately portray the inner emotions and struggles Eddie Brock has as Venom, also the writers chose how Eddie Brock acts in both movies so I think according to the script Grace actually did a pretty good job.

Just because Spiderman 3 ain't great doesn't mean Topher did bad job. They focused on the wrong villian to bring the plot back to 1 and Just added Venom for the sake of it But Topher still did a good job

The rotten tomatoes rating is already messed up and made low. Due to many fans of Lady Gaga wanted her movie “A Star is Born” to beat Venom, due to both releasing the same day in the US. Topher Grace has a decent role as Venom but it's kinda sad that the Venom in Spider Man 3 died. That's tragic. But Tom Hardy has a better role as Venom because of how magnificent it is without letting our antihero dies.

I quite enjoyed venom (2018) it was pretty good took a little too long to get to the venom portion but when it got there it was good "on my planet I'm a bit of a loser" killed me
Topher Grace was absolutely amazing perfectly played both Eddie Brock and Venom really made Spider-Man 3 one of the greatest superhero movies for me of all time and easily one of the best villains on the big screen while Tom Hardy was like a turd....in the wind

Tom Hardy is the best Venom, Topher was just weird. Atlest with Tom's Venom you actually care about the character. Well you'd care about him anyway because he's the main character but Topher's Venom just happened way too fast with next to no character development. Venom is the villain of Spiderman 3 and for it to be a great portrayal it needs development.
Tom hardy sucked though. And his development was rushed.

The symbiote animation is a lot better in the S-3 movie than Venom. In S-3, the weird way the symbiote crawls by extending these sticky feet looking things looks way better in comparison to Venom where the symbiote looked like Barrel O Slime
But if they raced, the 2018 symbiote would go faster.

I will give you the fact that the animation for the Symbiote in S3 was a little creepier for sure (Where it would slowly and meticulously crawl up the arm of Peter Parker), The Symbiote in the comics actually looks a lot more liquidy... which is something that Venom was more accurate on.
But once again going back to your point, the one thing S3 did better than Venom did (when it comes to the Symbiotes) was how it bonded. It didn’t just seep into the skin in S3 ,but rather it latched on to the skin and slowly covered it’s soon to be host.

This is why you should never listen to critics. Spiderman 3 was literally one of the best spiderman movie but some critics just gave bad review an everyone believe. Even if one critics is high on drugs and says bad about a movie everyone will easily believe him

I'm sorry Topher Grace Venom wins he played Eddie Brock and Venom very well it was meant to be btw he wasn't annoying. Topher Grace Venom was dark, evil, vengeful and scary and his Venom suit was great. As for Tom Hardy he really sucked playing the character and had a lame ass movie and his venom suit looks more like a scooby doo monster than the actual venom
