Its strange how people got so worked up over the way Joe played the Mean Streets intro. Its not even a riff. Its more of a circus trick thats not meant to be copied. Shit, even Eddie didnt play it the same way twice.
I was horrified when he tried to play it because there are 12 year old guitarists on RUclips who play it PERFECTLY!
How intelligent, likeable.... grounded and humble is Nuno?!? VERY...... Great interview
Thank you!!
What a fucking great interview, Jeremy. Nuno is amazing to listen to. I love his insight and the angles he sees things from. Great respect for him......and the love he has for Edward.....well...that's the love we all have for Edward and have had for Edward since the moment we heard the first note from him.....
Thank you!!
Nuno is awesome!!
I love Joe but I would LOVE to see Nuno playing on that tour. At least do a couple songs.
One of the most naturally gifted guitar players there is,,him and Richie kotzan,,,
"Solo of the century"? That solo blew my mind!!! BUT... now that time has passed, I really don't think it's his best. "Get The Funk Out" was the solo of the century perhaps... that tapping sequence alone broke the Internet.
As for Joe...his interpretation of EVH is a welcome treat.
Joe was trying to play Mean Streets... he was just showing that it is a difficult thing to play. It's not like he'd been sitting down trying to learn it for months. It's like Wayne Gretzky doing a charity basketball game with NBA players and showing that it is hard to make a 3-ball and everyone coming down on him for not being able dribble well, and people saying that he should be able to dribble well because he's a pro athlete. That's how silly all this uproar is. JS is one of the greatest players in our lifetime!
Extreme always seemed to have ... extremely tame lyrics. "Mother, Don't Wanna Go To School Today," "Love is Thicker than Blood," "More than Words," "Get the Funk Out." That being said, Nuno is a serious badass on guitar! I forget the song, but there was a cover he played, sitting down with 4 other soloists, and he was amazing. The others in Extreme are excellent musicians, but they might consider a more dangerous lyricist (that's not Satanic). "Rise" lyrics are more dangerous; but then, a little NIN, e.g. "Hurt" or such/"Sober".
@@Rocksite1 seeing them in a few weeks!
Nuno is a gentleman. Awesome guy. For no practice, Joe did amazing. I can’t play halen stuff. Leave him alone already.
wow, the history about he-man woman hater is amazing! Amazing interview :)
Satriani is a phenom and can pretty much play anything on an electric guitar. Thats what happens when you hit the esteemed virtuoso level. He’ll tighten it up - and I thought his performance was epic. If the shoe was on the other foot and Eddie had to play a Satriani track with no rehearsal it’d be exactly the same
He doesn't need to tighten it up - they won't be playing Mean Streets on tour.
I could picture Van Halen doing his own take on Ice 9.
Satriani was always boring and a goofball. he was never anybody.
@spiritsplice
Lol He was pretty big in the late 80's/early 90's. And I definitely prefer him to Steve Vai.
@@spiritsplice Have you listened to any of his stuff?
Nuno’s admiration for Eddie is awesome.
RIP EVH
👑
🎸
Hell yeah!
A great example of this is Zakk playing Dimes riffs on this Pantera tour. Zakk is awesome but he does not have the same rhythm/DNA/Feel as Dime, No matter how good he is. People complain about it but why? Its something you cannot replicate no matter how good you are, Thats what makes each guitar player so unique.
Joe hadn't ever played those tunes until recently. The tour is in the summer. He's going to sound great, like the TRIBUTE the tour is meant to be.
We dont know he hasnt played them. Its VAn Halen, thats like a guitar player never trying a zeppelin song ..... or a VH song lol.
@@97warlock Did you see the video? Joe just started learning the songs and they hadn't rehearsed much. They talked about it in the video.
@karlsalocks Idk, it's kinda lame IMO. Not using Eddie's brown sound and playing with his teeth was ridiculous.
What really pisses me off is that no one did anything when Eddie passed. The guys a legend, the most ground breaking influential guitarist in decades and he gets nothing. WTF! You would think every rock guitar player who worth anything would be lining up to pay tribute. A benefit concert to honor Eddie and send the proceeds to cancer research or something. It's really pathetic!
Your right, there's no doubt he'll have it down....
That tour is a tribute to Sammy..don't be fooled
Nuno’s love for Ed is the best. And he did NOT disrespect Satchboogie with ANYTHING he said… great interview as always Jeremy! Please have Nuno back on. Cheers - R
Agreed, he was spot on! Great interview Jeremy 🎉
Love Nuno and Joe. It’s not disrespect stating the truth though and Joe butchered it bad.
he confirmed Joe is a B leaguer
Thank you!!
Well, Joe Satriani replace Blackmore and if it sounds good nobody cares, not the audience in the concert and not to the band members
I just love this because people are talking about guitar and Eddie, this is good. We all know Joe is amazing and will be fine on the tour. But just that people are talking about this, this is great for guitar, and for rock and roll!
EVH...often imitated.....never duplicated.
Nuno was spot on with what he said. I'm starting to think that maybe Sammy kinda threw Joe under the bus on that performance. Sammy was talking Joe up and I don't think Joe was ever planning on performing that during the interview. You can see it in his body language when Sammy pushed him to do it. He was uncomfortable.
Naw it was mostly Howard being Howard. He wasn't even trying to put satch on the spot, he's just a fan wanting to hear some of his favorite songs lol.
It was weird seeing that rise solo blow up cuz that part everybody freaked about, he’s done that sound before 30+ years ago on Lil Jack Horny.
peacemaker die 1992
Joe satriani spent his life building a legacy and a career that we would all dream of writing his songs. Playing and teaching and touring around the world for more than 45 years, not like youtube player, he is a BIG BIG BIG name in electric guitar history, if eddie had to play a satriani track even with rehearsal, like if i could fly, that's hard for eddie.
I admire Nuno and his abilities on guitar. But if you haven’t heard Jacob Deraps RUclips channel Van Halen attempts you need to check him out. He nails most of Ed’s parts.
Sure does!
@@BedroomStudioGuy223 Deraps in my opinion along with Dweezil Zappa and Wolfie are good enough playing EVH to do it in a real and meaningful way. Something tells me each of them spent more time in the past year playing Eddie stuff than Satriani has done his entire life. And none of them will ever be as accomplished as Satriani. Nobody would tell LeBron he isn't worthy of legend status if he can't dunk from the FT line like MJ did right?
Jacob is a bud, killer tone and playing 🤟🏻
VH fan here.
Fantastic interview.
Nuno is a class act and a great musician.
Satriani is a legend.
Thank you Jeremy.
RIP EVH.
Thank you!!
Nuno is such a humble guy, a fan as well as a great musician.
I think had Hagar enlisted Vai instead of Satriani for this whole Van Halen thing, he would had pulled it off 100 percent. He did it before.
Nuno is not just an amazing musician and guitar player, a monster. He is honest like no one else. He has that pure spirit and feel with his own music like Eddie had. They are different for sure. For me no all guitarist have that, even though they can play amazingly. It's that kind of wild approach.
NUNO RULES. And obviously Joe will tighten ALL that up by July. I mean really? He's too good, and respectful of EVH to not.
Thank you! Eddie was basically writing broadway musicals “each song” - he was profoundly “not a rock player or shredder” - he was just a great musician and composer - it all came out through his guitar - which sounded rock - but his stuff is as rounded and musically creative as Barry Manilow. He was an amazing commercial composer and player. John Williams.
billy squier wrote all of his songs he rarely wrote songs with anyone if ever. the fact he called nuno back in the day to write songs is a huge compliment to nuno
I was hoping Satch would make G3 an Eddie tribute and go out with Nuno, Phil X and play a ton of VH.
Add Satchel to make it G4
+ Pete Thorn for G5
Great interview. Love Nuno's insights and perspective.
The Hagar thing is just Chickenfoot playing Van Halen songs. Listen to EVH Playing mean street on the live without a net, just amazing.
Satchel from Steel Panther can play all EVH songs with ease.
And so whats you point? Everyi guitar players can do EVH stuff but still there is only one original and thats eddie and to think joe satriani will play thats an honor necause he is mot only a guitar legend or virtouso he even produce steve vai
@@richarddizon8889 My point is Satchel can play all EVH songs with ease.
Russ is great but he never got Eddie down at 100 percent going back to when I saw Atomic Punks.
Nuno has always something interesting to say, his vision of music is very interesting too.
He might not remember this but I believe he played Mean Street live once with Steel Panther if I'm not wrong. He also did a song on drums with them. Well, I've been a fan of him and Extreme since I'm 19 and I'm 49 today, and I'm proud to be one of the fans of this great band for so long 🤘🤘
You do, and get, the best interviews. No doubt! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks bud!!
I'm just praying there's a follow up to Six, because I might not make it another 15 years! Great album.
It’s a must!! We need it!
Nuno was right up there with Eddie and Randy as an inspiration for me as a young guitar player back in the early 90's.
The man!!
Nuno is one of the best in the world. So is Joe though. Its hard to sound like someone else. My brother can pick up a junk guitar and sound great or a high end guitar and sound great as well. Lots of it is in the fingers.
Definitely right up there. Comes across as a really chilled out guy too.
Randy = #1
@@SavDog262 he could be in certain aspects
Nuno is ultra talented guitar player and a very articulate speaker. This Interview was a great listen. Very well done.
Thanks for watching! 🤘🏻
I saw extreme in the early 90s in belfast northern ireland i knew nuno was one of best guitarists out there back then.
All these players with 7-8 string guitars, Drop d and c tunings with one finger chords thinking they're bad ass and here comes Nuno with 6 strings and blows everyone's minds.
Nuno is an ageless vampire.
lol Smoke another one Dude!
Nuno's eyes have always been like that. He has sleepy eyes and they are more pronounced since he's gotten older. Js He's always looked like that.
Id rather have a sober intermediate on my team instead of a ego junkie who cant open his eyes for a effing pod
Great explanation from Nuno on Eddie and Joe. I saw all the clips with Stern and Joe and I enjoyed them all! Joe was damn close to Eddie but still put his take on it a little. If you love the music and a great guitarist then why would you be critical? For hardly practicing they created magic together and it was great! @ 23:54 that was cool that Eddie listened to Nuno! 3 sides was a great CD!
NUNO Explain it absolutely on point being a former drummer. I'm so glad that he explained it that way now. I understand why most people can't play like that. Thank you for that great incredible explanation. Very easy to understand now What a great interview thank you guys.
To me, Nuno is carrying on that feel like Eddie Van Halen. Love his music & playing. Edward is still the king!
Joe is brilliant. Hes gonna kill it , in his own way & Eddie would get a kick out of it. Id love to see Wolf as a guest on this tour.
Joe , you have beach balls, go out there & kick ass ! Ill be there .
Saw Nuno with Zakk, Yngwie, Vai, Amasi at Generation Axe show in 2019 in Vegas. Great players all.
God I love the story of the Van Halen sound guy coming to Nuno asking if the He-Man Woman Hater riff is his, because he’s been hearing on Van Halen soundcheck.. WOW
No disrespect to Satch because he is a great player but how do you show up on the Howard Stern show and can't pull off the intro to Mean Street and make off the cuff jokes on how you can't play it!! That wasn't a good sell to fans thinking "Hmm, am I going to pay big $$ to see this guy and band pull off this tribute"?? There are at least 2 or 3 guys like Deraps, Nuno, Phil X who would be better suited to play EVH. Those guys can kill it.. I am not sold on Joe Satch.. Just my opinion..
love that Nuno can coherently explain EVH.. says a lot about him. also like that he thinks as much about Sammy as I do.. He can say all he wants but you can tell he think’s Sammy is a waste of breath… lol
anyway, like I was about to say Nuno can coherently explain EVH, “Edward’s pocket, rhythm, feel, swing is what separates him from everyone.. I’m The One.. that percussive, rhythmic, crazy, mental approach to guitar that Edward had.. wanna play it, that thing? good luck.. He’s the guy. No one’s gonna take the Edward thrown.. brown sound all day..” 😂 Nuno knows
Sammy a real guitarist? He even has a sticker on his guitar noting he can’t play faster than 55 bpm
Nuno is so great at breaking things down this whole interview was epic. He is the nicest rock star I've ever listened to and he's not hiding shit the fact that he didn't throw Satrani under the bus and sorta pointed the finger at Sammy that's straight up honor he didn't talk crap about Sammy he just cleared the air and it's true Joe is Joe he's not EVH. Great Interview Nuno is killer ! 🤟
Huge props to Joe for doing this!!! I don't care what anyone says, nothing but respect for him for giving it his all....and telling it like it is! Nobody can be Eddie and Joe was the first one to say it! When was the last time you heard anyone talk about these fabulous moments Eddie gave us? Nobody was talking about Mean Street anymore! Now you type E into the RUclips search bar and Eddie Van Halen Mean Street pops up! Thanks Joe! Thanks for reminding us that all the greats including you are only here once !
Nuno nailed his description of Eddie
Agreed!!
Numero Nuno!
When you crank your amp up and feel that chord hit you, there is nothing like it. Great interview nuno is definitely the man
Every thing Nuno says is bang on! As a player and an instrument maker. ..respect Nuno!😁👍
Joe did fine, you could see his hands were shaking. All of us players have asked to make a stretch. Good to know even the mighty Satriani needs time in the woodshed. It's really hard to get your hands around someone else's chops. As for Nuno looking forward to the Extreme gig next Tuesday in Glasgow. Can't wait!
Sir Nuno's been tearing it up since the debut album. the Crybaby solo, Flight of the Bumblebee...etc.
Yuuupppp!
Nuno did a guitar clinic at guitar center in Schaumburg illinois in the early 90s, i remember meeting him and he was the nicest coolest most down to earth dude id ever met. Ferociously amazing guitar player, amazingly cool guy.
Nuno is so cool. All of us and him are around the same age and we get what he's saying. From the first time i heard the rythym guitar parts on "Play With Me" caught my ear instantly. Been following him since. Great interview Jeremy👍👍.
Why talk so much about Van Halen when you can be talking about your own songs and craft. I think Extreme is missing an opportunity here. It is like they are doing PR for Van Halen.
Sammy stealing the interview, I keep hearing stories like this about Sam. he's a weird dude.
This was AWESOME!!! Thank you!!!
How ironic, I just mentioned to a co worker today as I think Satch is the wrong guy to play an Ed tribute, he is an great player but doesnt have soul and has no style or sound like Ed and I said it should be Nuno and here we are
I love what Nuno says about the tubes and fingers relationship. The stuff that goes on in a vacuum tube is alive. Organic. Living electrons inside of a sealed glass jar slamming into each other at the speed of light set in motion by megawatts of electricicle (yes, I said electricicle) magic. You can't get that from a static printed circuit.
Love Extreme Six!!! It is really cool!!! Eddie is missed and I love Joe, Vai, Nuno, Eric Johnson. .... Guitar is still in GREAT hands!!!
Thanks for watching! 🤘🏻
On se rapproche vraiment quand on est un très grand fan, et qu'on a les possibilités physiques et psychiques, Nuno peux s'approcher d'Eddy par exemple ;
5150 Solo from live without a net is the greatest solo
Sammy really fuked up by getting Joe to cover Eddie. He plays and sounds nothing like Eddie and never will. Don't get me wrong, I love Satriani, and I've seen him live on numerous occasions. I also saw him do the Jimmy Hendrix tribute tour with a bunch of other guitarists, and I wasn't impressed. Like Nuno said, Joe is great at being Joe. No one can fuk with that. The guy who really would've done Eddie justice is Nuno. And I'm guessing he would've been happy to do it since Eddie was one of his idols. Sammy dropped the ball on this one.
Nuno❤️♾️❤️EVH
Having a memorable iconic solo is rare today. Nuno's recognition of this is important. I always remember him citing Brian May or Elliot Easton as playing great solos. Not shredding, but just great.
Eddie played drums and piano that allow play the piano on guitar ( tapping)
Nuno appears to be messed up all the time. Is he a big stoner or a drug addict?
Simplexiti ,,, always goes back to basics ,,,then the personality of the player/writer comes into play,,,NOW OUR EARS HAVE BECOME USE TOO THESE BASICS ,,,CREATING TASTY RIFFs SOUNDS COOL,,,,we heard it before BUT ITS DIFFERANT. THE ART ABOUT BEING A MUSICIAN IS GREAT (,,,IT'S NOT THE OLYMPIC GAMES),,, no one can be EDWARD no one can be NUNO,,,THATS WHATS GREAT ABOUT IT,,,,,(BE YOU.)
I am saying Joe was goofing and being respectful . He is just learning them ……. Joe is a consummate professional and supreme music theory guru with every chop down !!! He can intellectually go over every style and progression. Yes Eddie is the truest original artist !!! Joe will be there
Unique how he barely opens his eyes.
Great interview, love Nuno. Said what I always said.....the trick to the van Halen thing is in the rhythm and the swing. His father was a big influence and a Jazz musician, I think a lot of that feel was born from playing and listening to their father. Loved this interview ❤
Nuno should of been the Van Halen guitarist
I wasn’t a “Nuno” fan back in the day. I liked Extreme but I didn’t think much of Nuno. He was passable.
NOW, I love this guy. He’s a connection to my past. He’s part of that time in my life that is long gone. A connection to music that isn’t made anymore. AND I can appreciate Nuno’s talent now. It started with RISE and him talking about Eddie. Then the Rick Beato interview. I started looking up his playing. Damn! This guy is good! The first Extreme song and solo I ever heard had a TON of pick noise. That turned off my ears for many decades to his playing. I’m glad he and Extreme are still around and doing well. And that solo was smoking! 🔥 💨
Really? To me it's just a bunch of mindless speed picking like he's doing warmup exercises really fast.
Nuno’s swing is so good, even EVH was influenced by him.
Love Nuno...Ed is the GOAT..
Nuno gives respect to EVH
Nuno is soooooooo fuckin’ baked in this interview… heh
Yup!!
he seems to have a cold, FFS
Wolfgang can do it since he can do it all
Nuno is high as shit. His eyes are nearly shut
Ele é míope, a claridade e essas luzes brancas, fazem mal para pessoas míopes. Eu tenho míopia, e na claridade, fecho os olhos também até quando estou lendo, incomoda.
No I don't think he is. Its just how his eyes are❤
Great interview! Nuno Rocks! Thanks for letting the guest talk Jeremy! I hear too many interviews these days where the host interrupts too much. ✌❤🙏
Appreciate that! It’s also cause I’m a fan and love to hear the artist talk haha they are the stars, I just sit back 🤘🏻
Nuno looks pretty messed up here, damn. Look at his eyes😶🌫️
Ayeman... Everything Nuno is an #Addiction!! 💓🔥
Thanks to you, Jeremy! 👍
The closest thing to EVH is Vito Bratta. Satch is now the King. The Best of All World's tour is the coronation he deserves.....
Thank you! I've always thought vitto was RIGHT THERE WITH ED!
@@blakejohnson996 totally agree Vito is even more melodic, the broken arpeggios and tapping...🤘
That interview which Sammy was interviewed with Ed .....Was it a cover issue in Guitar Player magazine interview in 1987 ?
Nuno has some good points, because he is one of the last of the axe slingers and guitar heroes, and because new music lacks tone and style, so a band like Extreme doing it old school in a sense, was refreshing.
If you take Eddie's solos out of the songs, you still have superb rhythm playing and a vast amount of different chord voicings all happening, it's the same thing with Nuno, these guys can make Chromatic scales bounce because of a tremendously great rhythmic instinct and the intro to Mean Streets really demonstrates that in action....Eddie's essentially just slammin' the strings while showing the power and importance of great rhythm that underlies all of his work.
Eddie has said that the Mean Street intro technique he used was directly inspired by funk bass player's slap-bass styles
And slap bass is based on drumming.
I'm listening to all the Halen' albums and doing my homework like Eddie originally told me to do in order to become a better guitarist. Had a lot of gains today. I'm in Women and Children First. Halen was like a machine on a mission. My first all time fav track was Cradle Will Rock. They played that song everywhere at the skating ring, on the bus, Etc Etc It just fit my life and era so well. Also liked Kings and Queens Aero Smith and of course Highway To hell. But Kings and Queens and Cradle Will Rock Were huge staples in my life.
I'm starting to discover that playing guitar is what I want to do the rest of my life for a living. I want to be sponsored and be in a band Etc Etc I want everything that comes with it including the headaches, long hours, bus rides Etc Etc practicing 2-3 hours a day and today for some reason my practice time just really clicked. I got in top of these stairs in Westwood that resembled a stage, wind blowing, hair blowing, and just let it rio. Never been a shy kid,not since grade school was over and I met my first girl in Jr High. I forced myself to get over shyness. Now I'm a star working and waiting to happen working on his craft til I die or make it, whatever comes first. *** How bout Spanish Flu You Guys???? Is that track ridiculous or what!!! EVH could do it all and do it all really really well. So excited for the future. My attitude is improving and getting better everyday!!!! Love You Metal God Brothers❤❤❤ Stay Strong!!!!

the rise solo is a confused joke.....
Joe doing Edward was ok....I thought Joe had a damn good crack at it. But on VH fan sites there were people putting horribly cruel comments attacking him which they shouldn't have done. Joe is a great player in his own right & such a nice bloke he deserves better than that.
These fans attacking joe was just jealous because they had their favorite guitarist that wanted to be on that tour they are not real evh fans there just phoenies who cant even play an F chord on a guitar or be like joe or other famous guitar players
@@richarddizon8889 yes…..And I remember ED calling Joe a GREAT player in Guitar Player magazine interviews in the 1980s and 1990s
Joe has put out 18 studio albums , 2 have gone gold & 1 has gone platinum. He's toured the world multiple times so all these bedroom rockers that want to bash him need to look at what Joe has done then compare it to what they've done. They need to STFU.
@@rogerdaly6326 exactly sir
@@rogerdaly6326 Yes indeed. And Joe is such a nice guy too. No ego…Just a professional who LOVES his art…And these aggressive type idiots try to take advantage of him being kind because they know he’s not the kind of guy to get involved in a troll dogfight situation.
That was brilliant...thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nuno is one of my favorite living guitarist. Ive never heard anyone talk about how eddie was a drummer first and played some guitar parts like a drum....that is so true. I never thought about it before. I am going to see Extreme/living colour in nashville in march and hopefully my 18 year old son will go to so he can experience these 2 bands. One thing while watching these inverview....I notice how nuno looks like he is squinting most of the time. Is there something wrong with his eyes? He looks like hes either really high, or very, very sleepy....but he is great, and this interview is great.
This was an amazing interview! Nuno had some great insight into EVH’s guitar playing. His explanation makes a lot of sense that Eddie was a drummer first and he used his fingers like he was playing percussion on the guitar. Also, agreed that Joe deserves a pass. Sammy admitted they hadn’t rehearsed. I love Sammy, but I agree that he did put Joe on the spot on Howard Stern. Joe hasn’t boasted about being able to play EVH music. In fact, in another recent interview, Joe said Alex Van Halen had called him some time ago and asked if he wanted to tour with Van Halen playing Eddie’s part. He turned the offer down because he wasn’t confident about playing EVH’s music. Fantastic interview! Would love to hear more from Nuno❤
EVH was a pianist before he played drums. A lot of his tapping licks were piano-esque.
