Fascinating interview, and Anthony Hopkins seems so cordial and reasonable. But I'm not sure how he would have played Gandhi: Richard Attenborough (who had also directed Magic) made a better choice with Ben Kingsley instead of Anthony Hopkins, though Mr. Hopkins is great in other roles.

Attenborough said Hopkins' screen test for Gandhi was great. It was Hopkins himself who bowed out of the project.

Attenborough sort of discovered Hopkins before anyone else
He knew he was great and cast him in a load of his films

I definitely could have seen him pull off playing Ghandi. He's got that gentle reserved nature, and is that talented at his craft. Not to slight Ben Kingsley, who looks so much like Ghandi, and gave a great performance. It all worked out for both actors. If Anthony had played Ghandi, he might never have had the chance to become Dr. Lector!
