As an proud upstate boy, my childhome is 15 minutes from stanwix and the oriskany battlefield, we grew up on stories of the this time. thank you for this.
Nice production, my wife’s family lost four men at oriskany plus 2 civilians after, not all Oneida went with the Americans , the Thames band today live in Ontario canada
Thank you, good video about a siege I've been interested in since I was a kid and read a novel based on those events. I'll be checking out your video about the battle of Oriskany now! This was indeed a key victory for the patriots - it threw off the British invasion plan and opened the way for the decisive victory at Saratoga. I would say, though...it's quite a stretch to claim that the British military was the most powerful in the world. Their navy was dominant, to be sure, but its land forces were puny compared to many other European powers.
Thank you - interesting point, I guess it's just something I've heard in history channel documentaries lol. In the phrase's defense though, the british did beat the other major world power at the time (France) a decade before, so really, who could challenge them? I'll tell you who - the americans haha
@@LocalNYhistory Yes, the Americans could challenge the British, but they couldn't beat them without the French...and the Spanish and the Dutch... You have a point that Britain did beat France a decade before, but the truth is a little more complex. The British were allied with Prussia, who DID have what most people considered the most powerful land army on Europe. So the British controlled the seas, the Prussians dominated on land, and there you go. (And to make it even MORE complex, Britain's allies in America and India were more powerful on the land than France's allies in those theaters...) But the American Revolution was primarily a land war in America, a war that Washington wisely turned into a war of attrition and political will rather than a series of major pitched battles. In that sort of a conflict Britain was in serious trouble, as its army was small - even tiny by European standards - and socially unpopular, and the war was deeply unpopular and recruiting very difficult. Still, let's not miss the larger point - you're making good videos with fun graphics and great, somewhat obscure content, and I like that!
Good of you to note the fort's reconstruction (a Bicentennial project), which cost the City of Rome its original downtown. The Gansvoort mural is eroding and the building is being renovated. However, the famous neon Paul Revere atop the copper works is to be restored.
Upstate New York is rich with revolutionary war battle sites, they are every were , the state is were control of North America was fought over , first the French and English ,then the Americans and English, the Iroquois seemed to always take the losing side
Nicely done. You should do a deeper dive into Arnold. He was pivotal (before he became a traitor) in upstate NY (e.g Valcour and Saratoga as well as Stanwix) in holding back the British, which enabled the revolution to continue
Most of the British troops at Oriskany were from Tryon County and had until recently served alongside Herkimer's regiment in the Tryon County militia. Everyone had close relatives on the other side: fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
Hey man love your videos, as an upstate new Yorker I've watched all of the city history videos! I'd be honored if you'd do one for Norwich NY id even be willing to take videos or give you a tour if you're ever around! I'm a YT partner so we could collaborate or something!
Awesome channel man, and thanks for the offer. I'm a busy family man these days and I live downstate so it'd be hard to make that happen but a video on Norwich is interesting. Is there anything in particular regarding it's history that everyone (there) knows about? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Beautiful artwork but over-simplified story. Marinus Willet was the real hero, I heard Gansevoort was ready to surrender and Willett,um, gently told him not to. And Oriskany was one of the nastiest fights of the revolution.
The saddest event in history is the British losing the revolution and the decimation of the native population. By “freedom” you mean the excuse made to justify land theft and genocide because we were “stronger” and had “better use of the land.” The excuses I hear to justify this are so absurd
@@morrismonet3554 it indeed was genocide. Same as WW2 there are still Jews still alive. That doesn’t make it right. As for the casinos, good for them. I hope they can take most of NYs $$$$

Absolutely! Thanks for watching
I would love to visit these historic sites. My ancestors on my fathers side are named on the Oriskany monument

Thanks to B. Arnold Fixed St. Leger being unable to link up with Bourgoine, then fixed Bourgoine at Saratoga!

Like the British didn’t oppress their subjects! 🤣😂😂🤚🤚
No genocide, stop lying. The Onieda came out all right and now run a casino and sell tax-free cigarettes and are richer than most upstate New Yorkers.

The oriskany ambush is really the apex...just sayin.
bennington was the real turning point, come on!!!!!!! lol
