So true, not meant to be sporty. This as past Lincoln cars for many years are luxury cars. Amazes me now days these younger generation it's all about speed.
I too liked the previous generation MKZ split winged grille, *but not those beady-eyed headlights.* The updated face looks better overall. As for the new MKZ and Continental looking very similar up front, for me, brand identity is important. I don't hear anyone complaining about a family resemblance among BMWs or Mercedes-Benzes.
I think it works perfectly on the '13-'16 MKZ. The updated nose looks tacked on, especially since they made absolutely no changes to the rest of the car. It was better before.
I have an '11 MKS with not quite a split/waterfall grill and I like it. My '13 MKT DOES have the split/waterfall which at first, i was not "that fond of" but it has definitely grown on me and now when I approach the car, I admire that old grill. I'm glad my 2006 Lincoln Town Car has a V-8 but I think V-6 has an overall performance. I test drove a 2017 preowned Lincoln Continental Select trim level & I loved the car, very quiet interior from outside noise & drove great too. I'm thinking of buying one eventually but might keep my 2006 Lincoln Town Car Signature as I like it as well.

I sat in two of these beauties several months ago while my Focus was at a dealership for routine maintenance. One of them was in this blue with the black leather but was the Select trim level...what a beautiful car! I agree the 6-speed automatic is dated for this flagship. Personally, I would want a 4-cylinder with a plug-in battery like the Fusion Energi plus a 10-speed automatic for much better mileage. The only thing I don't like about the design are the short front fenders and hood due to front-wheel drive. I longer front end would better balance out the lines.

Not just the Genesis G90, but I'd compare the Conti to another reviewed vehicle that you had reviewed earlier, the Cadillac CT6. Also, I think the volume model will have the 2.7L V-6 and still has plenty of get up and go. See his review of the MKX which has that 2.7, and that Conti is about $12k less.

I don't know about this Continental.....I guess if I drove it , I would appreciate more than I do now.....As far as the styling of the car, the rear end reminds me of a 2006 Kia Armani.......same look, same tail lights design almost (with the Continental having sleeker lamps)..... Of course the front end was borrowed from Jaguar....but the car has luxurious amenities.....still it just looks dated to me, as if this car should have been introduced 10 years ago....
Love your detailed and honest review as always, Steve. This Lincoln hit a bunt single instead of a home run. The Continental is mostly underwhelming, from exterior design to interior layout. Nothing about it should scare the Genesis G90. Lincoln is on base....but there's 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th...
A good black car and some very nice features and details, but based on this and other reviews still a bit behind the best from Germany, (and to some extent Caddy).
Great review Steve. I am a big Lincoln fan but think that this flagship gets a C plus. Look for this car to lose value quickly. Here is betting a 50 large Lincoln is in the low 30's two years later on used car market. Steve, were you surprised how much Lincoln missed the mark here? I am. Also, Ford continues to bundle their safety products in an expensive option making safety a premium expense. Ford should offer its safety technology as part of every purchase, or for a modest cost.
MKZ been around longer than the MKZ, I like this shade of blue as much as the black. I like the black interior which the wood looks much better as it did in the Lincoln Town Car with darker interior on the Signature Limited for an example.
1:40 I agree, Steve. This grille is only reminds me of a Remington Shaver. This car's understated, or forgettable styling would work well in its target demos, if you are north of 55
"Innovative Ownership Privileges that cannot be found any where else" - Lincoln Way.... sounds exactly like the standard features of a Genesis. Overall the Continental is a beautiful car and i will give kudos to Lincoln for a much more classier and luxurious looking interior compared to the Genesis. There is too much plastic there.
Reading the comments is interesting. Either the styling is too modern, or it's nowhere near modern enough. Lincoln just can't win huh? My biggest gripe with the car is, something no one seems to mention, is that horrible wood trim. It's way too shiny, and it looks fake. Even though it's real.
Genesis is a good but not so popular brand. The Lincoln continental is a good car but is poor in sales as compared to it's german competitors. The mercedes sold about 55000 E class in 2017 while continental only 12000 Sad.
@Steve Hammes I definitely agree with you on the split wing grill looking better. I was looking at the MKz but now I want a used 2016 due to the change. The current design just seems like too much of an afterthought for me to buy in. This looks sexier for sure: goo.gl/SVFzHH
Lincoln's flagship car misses the mark for me. Personally, I just can't get over the exterior or interior design. All other brands, including Cadillac, has shifted its design strategy in a progressive way. Yet, Lincoln wants to bring back the "good ole days" by designing a car that reminds me of big boat-like sedans from the 70s to the 90s. If I wanted to spend $45-80k on a family sedan with luxury amenities, I'd look elsewhere. I think it's safe to say that a Lincoln is a dying brand and the company isn't doing itself any favors by producing cars that cater to a very small demographics.
Dave Paek you are absolutely correct. It is high time Lincoln change their design approach and i'm not just advocating change without substance. If you look at the Chinese, European and even the American young executive market they are looking for high tech luxury vehicles with a modern twist to be driven in. Even the best like BMW, Benz, Rolls-Royce and the rest has also taken that modern rout with their full size luxury sedans.
I think you bring up an interesting point that I didn't even consider -- China. The Chinese have a huge influence on car makers these days (e.g. introducing new models in China auto shows), so I wouldn't be surprised if Lincoln is specifically interested in selling its vehicles in China. After all, they're a for-profit company and they will sell where the demand is. Not saying that the Chinese don't appreciate other brands, but the Chinese may show more appreciation and demand for dying brands like Buick and Lincoln simply due to American nostalgia.
Actually they did bring back the blue leather motif. It is called "Blue Rhapsody" and it is one of their "Black Label" "themes". I got to sit in one in with that theme and it felt very nice to sit in.
The Conti is also built off the Fusion architecture with lots of modifications done to it. But I then remembered the Town Car was also built off the Panther platform, also used in the Crown Vic.
Isn't meant to be a "sporty" driving vehicle. It is trying to emulate the classic American luxury feeling that basically disappeared years ago.
So true, not meant to be sporty. This as past Lincoln cars for many years are luxury cars. Amazes me now days these younger generation it's all about speed.

Thanks, Hoder! I'l admit that a good deal of the pizzazz was lost from concept to production.
Thirties within two years huh? Looks like you lost that bet
This guy honestly sounds like he's been paid to give a bad review and I wouldn't doubt it either
Kate Diaz Caddy paid me off. Please send money if you’d like a better review.
MKZ been around longer than the MKZ, I like this shade of blue as much as the black. I like the black interior which the wood looks much better as it did in the Lincoln Town Car with darker interior on the Signature Limited for an example.

I agree, Steve. This grille is only reminds me of a Remington Shaver. This car's understated, or forgettable styling would work well in its target demos, if you are north of 55
You're probably right.
Nissan TitanWarrior
Guess the grille shaves as close as a blade or your money back.
Very handsome car, apart from the grill
"Innovative Ownership Privileges that cannot be found any where else" - Lincoln Way.... sounds exactly like the standard features of a Genesis.
Overall the Continental is a beautiful car and i will give kudos to Lincoln for a much more classier and luxurious looking interior compared to the Genesis. There is too much plastic there.
Genesis doesn't offer the equivalent of Black Label privileges nor do they offer a chauffeur service.
Good job Lincoln, but I would agree the Genesis G90 would be a much better value!
I'm surprised they didn't put suicide doors on the car since it started the trend correct me if I'm wrong
Only fridge in the back seat is missing
Eh, they're getting there
1:34 Did he just say "portals"?
thecarelectronicguy Doors are so yesterday ;-)
@Steve Hammes
I definitely agree with you on the split wing grill looking better. I was looking at the MKz but now I want a used 2016 due to the change. The current design just seems like too much of an afterthought for me to buy in.
This looks sexier for sure: goo.gl/SVFzHH
They should have made a better car, instead of wasting time and money with a bunch of silly services in order compensate for a lackluster car.
tail lamp look quite acquainted
Uber black
16 MPG city? Ouch...
Big let down
Lincoln's flagship car misses the mark for me.
While this may fly in china, here in the U.S. the gimmicks are simply that...
80 grand for a Lincoln............. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAH
seems A Rip of the Jaguar XJ!!
wayyyyy over priced as usual....he comes the transmission problems AGAIN....
$80,000 for a Lincoln is steep. I don't associate $80k and Lincoln. This is a nice car but there just isn't anything that would entice me to buy it.
Rather buy a used Audi A8L or S8!
Ford 500 with a Jaguar grill. FWD standard, Six-speed tran? Really?
All I can think is: This is basically a fancy Fusion.
pedro fernandez That would be the MKZ, not the Continental
The Conti is also built off the Fusion architecture with lots of modifications done to it. But I then remembered the Town Car was also built off the Panther platform, also used in the Crown Vic.
76k for a loaded Ford Fusion hahaha haha get real
Genesis G80 all the way
ugly and small If you want a real Lincoln, go 1972
