    I actually did a research project on Yemen for World Cultures class. Those buildings are giant highrises mad up of mud bricks and they were made to protect against floods because the previous settlement there was seriously damaged. There is also a large wall on the perimeter of the city to also protect from flooding.
    Maybe the history of flooding is why the city is in Wet Dry world? Just a theory though.

    The negative emotional aura comes from the fact that it's a f*cking water level

    • @nigoulenoblehiboux9812
      @nigoulenoblehiboux9812 3 года назад +173

      Honestly I think it has more to do with the fact that the whole level is between 4 artificial looking walls as opposed to the either open or natural looking wall used in other level

      As a kid, I always felt "negative emotional aura" from Hazy Maze Cave rather than Wet Dry World. Everything about Hazy Maze Cave was really intimidating to me. It was easy to get lost, the actual hazy maze itself stressed me out, the weird arrow platform shakes violently when it touches a wall which in turn also made me anxious, and it's arguably the most difficult 100 coin mission in the game. To this day, I still hate that level and honestly think the game would be better without it. Just have that pool warp you straight to the metal cap room.

    I think the depressing factor comes from the high walls that surround the level. It's like you're locked up in an enclosed room, somewhere without access to daylight and the water rises, which can potentially rob you of the last space of air and drown you.

      A shorter answer would be "it's a water level".

    • @pentelegomenon1175
      @pentelegomenon1175 3 года назад +4

      Here's another theory: the lower level represents the womb.
      - it looks like a place where people used to live but is now abandoned, like a womb
      - the changing water levels are like water breaking when a baby is born (amniotic fluid)
      - it's totally walled in, and can only be reached by a narrow tunnel, like the birth canal
      - this tunnel goes down instead of up, because babies in the womb are upside down
      - you pretty much need to learn a trick to get in the tunnel, it's not easy to access

    Fun fact in 2014 the unesco placed shibam at risk of disappearing due to the constant crumbling of the city throught the years. This in part being attributed to what most of the city is built out of, that being dirt bricks as well of being one of the oldest places still standing to have architecture that most resemble that of skyscrapers and tall buildings in general.

  • @darkmajick
    @darkmajick 2 года назад +3

    I think the weird aura comes from it feeling kind of claustrophobic and fake looking. It feels very cut off from anything or anyone. The only creatures that exist within are robotic or insects. Almost like a post-apocalyptic, dystopian, flooded dollhouse that you've been shrunk down and trapped in

    • @Galidorquest
      @Galidorquest 2 года назад

      You got the apocalyptic part right, an Apocalypse-vibe is probably what the game-developers were going for. The deserted Middle Eastern area represents rapture and the shining light represents a portal from Heaven opening up for the return of Christ. The Middle East is significant because it's where Christ was born and it involves Bible prophecies. And the oversized insects possibly represent demon creatures risen from Hell during the Apocalypse. Everything about Wet Dry World makes sense from a biblical standpoint.

    who is getting a negative emotions from one of the best worlds in the game? easily spent so much time as a kid playing around with the water levels - especially when entering at different hights - and just futzing around in the underground town

    It’s rather shibam that’s flooded - that the ‘ mud ‘ sucked the water or they might have added a water background to shibam. It might have been years ago it flooded- again, it might be that they added the water in the background to the mud city.

    I don’t understand why so many people feel disturbed or uncomfortable when they see that image.
    The thing that disturbs me, is knowing that people are disturbed by Wet-Dry World

    Has anyone tried doing a fan mod to make this level either less eerie OR make the eeriness have a point?
    Because I really think that's what makes it so disconcerting is that there's no life in the town, but neither is there ghosts... There's no story, only platforms... But the platforms seem to want to have a story

      I think it's biblical. The developers were probably going for an Apocalypse-vibe. The gloomy deserted area represents rapture and the Middle East is important because it's where Christ was born. And the shining light is a reference to a portal from Heaven opening up for the return of Christ on Earth after the rapture.
