  • Today, we're working on Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ Body Ground Locations! From what we can tell from the forums there's a bunch of people looking for the locations of the grounds on Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJs, 1993-1998 and there's a lot of conflicting info. So we thought we'd tear ours apart and look for all the locations and show you guys what we found. On our 1997 there were only 3 total, two for the body and one main body ground in the engine compartment. We understand 1993-1996 might have a ground on the drivers side above the kick panel (ours has a stud there, but no grounds attached to it). We've also heard that there may be a ground on the passenger side in the same location (behind the kick panel) but again, ours didn't have one. There is of course the main engine ground that varies in location depending on if you own a 4.0 or the 5.2 or 5.9, but this video is on body/chassis grounds. So if you're looking for your ZJ Grand Cherokee's body/chassis grounds, grab something delicious to drink, sit back, relax, and let us show you Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ Body Ground Locations!

    Electrical issues can sure be tough to diagnose, and ZJs seem to have more than their fair share since they were right there in the late 90s when every manufacturer seemed to be having issues with soldering circuit boards... that wouldn't manifest themselves for 20 years when the solder cracks and starts causing all kinds of weird issues. However, corroded grounds can cause many of the same symptoms and are much easier to fix. What are some of the electrical issues you all are tackling on your ZJs?

      Currently my main issues are my 98 ZJ 4.0 overheating with he AC running and driving. Also when using the cruise control at 65-70 after a few mins the battery gauge goes from 14 to max and then check gauges comes on. When I lower my speed then it goes back to normal. Newest part was a new starter. I don't remember any issues before that but really can't remember using cruise control at that time before the new starter. Plan on replacing the fan clutch and new serpentine belt to see if that helps. IDK

    You missed one below the alternator bracket. I was getting a good amount of voltage drop at full draw with my subs and I cleaned the one that you mentioned plus the one attached to the alternator, it was the dirtiest of them all. Glad I know where the under-the-carpet ones are now! Thanks!

    Thanks. I didn't know there were grounds under the seats. I love my ZJ but dang, it's having bad electrical issues. I know this won't solve my problem, but great video. I would take a ZJ over the rest any day.

    Also check the ground splice locations in the harness for corrosion it’s a common problem on the ZJs.

    • @MotorsandMischief
      @MotorsandMischief  2 года назад +3

      Good call! There are a LOT of splices in the ZJ, only a few of them are ground spices but they are all over the place. We're adding a link to an unbelievably complete wiring and component diagram. Its for a 93 ZJ, but will be applicable to we would guess 95% of everything you need to do on a ZJ. Link added in the description. Thanks for commenting!

    theirs a ground under the driver side headlights under the plastic and its definitely corroded. Theirs most likely a wire under the rear hatch panel for the latch that is most likely cut from the factory. I wen to the scrap yard looking for a rear hatch cuz mine got scratched and they were all cut accept for the one I found and that fixed my locks not locking half the time. Their are grounds on the front of each head and the rear tho on the passenger side it may be connected to the block but mine might just be connected incorrectly. I have heard their is a ground somewhere along the un by the engine but I haven't seen it.

    Oh by the way as far as your amplifier goes I can tell you exactly what they did they cut all the speaker those are the outputs to the speakers they cut all those off and rewired a new amp in there and probably took it out before you had it they might have had subwoofers or whatever else you might want to check your door speakers and see if they're Factory there's a good chance they probably replace those two

    • @MotorsandMischief
      @MotorsandMischief  Год назад +1

      That makes good sense, thanks! We did check and have the factory Infinity speakers in the rest of the Jeep, so either someone put those back in or just did the amp. Thanks for the insight!

    Can the jeep cut off while driving due to a bad ground connection?

    • @MotorsandMischief
      @MotorsandMischief  Год назад

      It can, yes. If you’re having weird electrical issues, clean and tight grounds is a good place to start. If you’re lucky it’ll fix the issue and if not, at least you’re starting with known good grounds. Good luck!

      The dreaded Cherokee random shut down.. very common. Crank position sensor, ignition Coil, bad grounds, loose connections at the harnesses and computer seem to be the main causes of it.

    I’ve just bought a ZJ with 340,000 km in Australia. Very happy with the purchase as the 4x4 features are fantastic and the engine in great condition. The wiring however is giving me some trouble.
    1. Electrical chairs work however the heating is not.
    2. The lights on the dash go dim however when I press hard on the main light button near the wheel and ignition with hands it brightens up again
    3. I bought a trailer where the trailer lights work however when I connect the electrical lights from my Jeep ZG/ZJ the trailer lights will not work. They work on my father in laws prado
    If anyone can give any advice before I spend more money on the electrical than the car itself haha as I love the vehicle please let me me know.
    P.s love the vid
    Kind regards,

      Electrical can be very confusing but if you can read wiring diagrams and you have good ones, you can solve any electrical problem. Mitchell On Demand has the factory manuals for these ZJs online, and they are only like $30 a year for unlimited access, including component locations and trouble shooting techniques. Plus, if you aren't super comfortable reading wiring diagrams, they have good tutorials on how to read them. Go to eAutoRepair.net and purchase the ZJ ones, you won't be sorry. There's no engine block ground on this thing

    • @MotorsandMischief
      @MotorsandMischief  Год назад +3

      There's an engine ground on ZJ's :) There has to be, or none of the electronics on the engine would work properly. On the 5.2 it's a strap that comes down from the firewall to the back of the engine, connects to the block via a bolt, and then goes back up to the firewall, making kind of a V shape. Thanks for the comment!

    • @jasonmurdoch9936
      @jasonmurdoch9936 Год назад

      @@MotorsandMischief thank you for getting back to me so quickly however I don't have the 5.2 I wish I did unfortunately I have the 4.0 automatic two-wheel drive Laredo

    • @MotorsandMischief
      @MotorsandMischief  Год назад +2

      Our pleasure! It should still have a ground. We believe on the 4.0 its a single strap and not the V configuration. It's certainly possible yours got disconnected somehow over the years and the engine will use any ground it can find to connect to the chassis, so it may run fine but still be missing its ground. Bad grounds can account for all kinds of weird, phantom electrical issues but the good news is you don't need anything special to make a grounding strap. You can buy generic grounding straps at any auto supply store. The 96-98 ZJs are OBDII and will be slightly different than the 93-95. If its a later one, you should see a strap at the very, very back corner, kind of on the drivers side. It may still be hooked to the engine and just never got reconnected to the firewall. If there isn't one there at all, get the generic one from the auto parts store and connect it from any solid metal surface on the engine over to the firewall. If you're at a loss for where to connect it on the engine, there is a bolt holding the oil dipstick tube that can be removed, cleaned, and used as an excellent ground location. The factory location on the firewall is just a hole in the fire wall with a bolt through it. If you can find it, clean the metal around it good and run the bolt in and out a few times to clean up the hole. If you can't find it, just drill a new hole in the firewall (carefully, not too deep) and make yourself a new one. The truck will happily use any good ground you supply so you don't have to be overly picky with making sure you get it exactly where the factory had it. Just make sure the engine has a good ground. Good luck!
